Digital phenotyping for mental health monitoring and personalized prediction in people with diabetes: a Python-based scoping review

Wenhui Hou; Wei Sun; Haochen Dai; Yang He; Guodong Xu; Xuefang Xie; … Frontiers in Digital Health, 2026, Vol. 8, pp. 2005262 https://doi.org/10.3389/fdgth.2026.2005262

چکیده

Background Diabetes frequently co-occurs with depression, anxiety, and diabetes-related distress, and psychological status directly influences glycaemic control and the risk of complications. Traditional mental health assessment relies on subjective scales. With the growth of digital health, digital phenotyping offers a new paradigm for real-time, objective mental health monitoring and prediction. However, the pathways through which these technologies perform monitoring and prediction remain unclear. Objective This scoping review aimed to systematically map the application pathways of digital phenotyping for mental health monitoring and prediction in people with diabetes, and to use machine learning-assisted text mining to analyse the main research themes and hotspots, thereby informing the future development of individualised risk prediction models and monitoring systems. Methods A scoping review search was conducted in six English databases (PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, Web of Science, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library) and four Chinese databases (CNKI, Wanfang, VIP, and China Biomedical Literature Database[CBM]), covering studies published from database inception to 10 September 2026. The search strategy was built around terms related to diabetes, digital phenotyping, and mental health. Machine learning-assisted literature mining was used to identify thematic patterns in the included studies. The study selection process and overall workflow followed the PRISMA extension for scoping reviews (PRISMA-ScR). Results A total of 2,968 records were retrieved. After screening, 10 studies were included. The evidence indicated that digital phenotyping mainly enables real-time monitoring of mental health in people with diabetes through signals such as continuous glucose monitoring (CGM), passive smartphone sensing, voice, and ecological momentary assessment (EMA). Machine learning methods were widely used for risk prediction modelling, but most studies built models at the group level, with only a few adopting n -of-1 analysis or subgroup prediction to achieve individualised risk prediction. External validation of models was generally lacking, and no intervention studies were identified. Conclusions Preliminary evidence suggests that digital phenotyping has exploratory potential for mental health monitoring and prediction in people with diabetes, but research that genuinely achieves individualised risk prediction remains limited. Closed-loop monitoring-intervention design and multicentre external validation are the main directions for future research. Systematic Review Registration https://osf. io/6wsaj/ .

Seok-In Yoon; Hui-Yeong Park; Jae-Hong Yoo; Sun-Yong Chung; Jong-Nam Kim Frontiers in Public Health, 2026, Vol. 14, pp. 1990679 https://doi.org/10.3389/fpubh.2026.1990679

چکیده

Background As global aging accelerates, age-related psychophysiological conditions have emerged as major public health concerns. Promoting and sustaining vitality, an inherent human capacity, is essential for healthy aging and long-term well-being. The Mindfulness-based Vitality Promotion (MVP) program is a mindfulness-based behavioral intervention designed to enhance physical and psychological vitality and support sustainable well-being. This study evaluated the feasibility and acceptability of the MVP program and explored preliminary pre–post changes in health-related outcomes among community-dwelling individuals in a lifelong learning setting. Methods This study employed a single-arm mixed-methods design. A total of 35 participants were recruited for this study. The MVP program was delivered over 8 weeks, with each session lasting 90 min. Quantitative data were collected through self-report questionnaires, and qualitative data were obtained via semi-structured interviews. Feasibility and acceptability were assessed based on program retention, session attendance, and participant satisfaction. Results Quantitative analysis revealed significant pre–post increases in integrative vitality and well-being, along with significant reductions in depression, fatigue, and anxiety. No statistically significant changes were observed in pain, sleep disturbance, digestive symptoms, anger, or mindfulness. Of the 35 enrolled participants, 31 completed the program (88.6%), with a mean attendance of 6.37 of eight sessions. Among the 30 satisfaction survey respondents, 28 (93.3%) indicated willingness to participate again and 30 (100%) indicated willingness to recommend the program to others. The qualitative analysis identified four major themes: (i) diverse life challenges and self-care needs, (ii) learning through experience, connection, and application, (iii) regaining balance and agency in life, and (iv) sustaining practice requires continued support. Conclusion Mixed-methods findings provide preliminary information regarding the feasibility and acceptability of the MVP program and indicate favorable pre–post changes in several self-reported health-related outcomes. The MVP program may represent a practical lifelong learning intervention with potential relevance for public health promotion. Further controlled studies are warranted to establish its efficacy. Trial registration The trial was first submitted to the Clinical Research Information Service, Republic of Korea (KCT0009961, https://cris.nih.go.kr/cris/search/detailSearch.do?seq=28524&search_page=L ), on October 8, 2024, before participant enrollment began, and registration was finalized on November 28, 2024.

Lee Joachim; Gaurav Duggal; Aida Mehrad ReAttach Affect Coach Journal, 2026, pp. 234-239 https://doi.org/10.26407/w6k7fw78

چکیده

Background: Individuals with complex trauma may continue to experience emotional distress, rumination, and maladaptive response patterns despite pharmacological treatment. Integrative interventions addressing affective responses, maladaptive patterns, and adaptive functioning warrant further clinical investigation. Case presentation: This report describes a 23-year-old woman diagnosed with complex trauma who her psychiatrist referred because she was not responding adequately to prescribed antidepressant and anti-anxiety medication. She received an eight-session intervention delivered in three phases: one session of Wiring Affect with ReAttach (W.A.R.A.®) on Day 1; one session of Brain-Switch 2.0® on Day 2 to address maladaptive brain patterns; and six subsequent ReAttach® sessions, emphasizing Cognitive Bias Modification (CBM) 3, followed by CBM 1 and CBM 2. Clinical observations: Following the Day 1 W.A.R.A.® session, the client reported a quieter mind, reduced rumination, greater calmness, and sleeping that night without sleeping medication. Brain-Switch 2.0® was administered on Day 2, which further enhanced her self-agency. Subsequent ReAttach® sessions integrated her sense of identity and improved boundary setting with her parents. At one-month post-therapy follow-up, the client reported improved management of rumination, greater emotional regulation, anxiety within normal ranges, preserved cognitive functioning despite ongoing family difficulties, and greater satisfaction with herself. Pre–post quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG) data showed changes in several recorded measures. The qEEG data indicated the absence of previous mental sluggishness, a clinically significant improvement in the trauma-related marker and emotional regulation within the normative range, and the absence of a depression-related marker.

Artificial Intelligence in Mental Health Support: Opportunities, Applications, and Ethical Challenges

Zengchen Wang Lecture Notes in Education Psychology and Public Media, 2026, Vol. 155, Issue 1, pp. None https://doi.org/10.54254/2753-7048/2026.pe38327

چکیده

Mental health conditions have become one of the most urgent public health challenges worldwide, affecting nearly one billion people and creating substantial social and economic burdens. Despite increasing demand for psychological services, barriers such as financial costs, shortages of mental health professionals, geographical inequalities, and social stigma prevent many individuals from receiving timely support. This paper examines the biological, psychological, and environmental factors contributing to mental disorders and evaluates the potential role of artificial intelligence (AI) conversational models in mental health support. It argues that AI cannot replace licensed clinicians but can serve as a complementary tool by improving accessibility, providing continuous communication, offering privacy, and delivering personalized psychoeducation. Particular attention is given to autism spectrum disorder (ASD), where AI's predictable communication style may support communication practice and reduce social pressure. The paper also discusses AI-assisted interventions based on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and examines ethical challenges, including privacy, algorithmic bias, and clinical responsibility. Overall, responsible cooperation between AI technologies and healthcare professionals may improve the accessibility and effectiveness of future mental healthcare.

Danielle Pretty; Michael Norwood; Tamara Ownsworth; Rachel Gregory; Elizabeth Kendall European Journal of Adapted Physical Activity, 2026, Vol. 18, pp. 16 https://doi.org/10.5507/euj.2025.010

چکیده

Modified dance for people with traumatic brain injury (TBI) is an emerging adjunct neurorehabilitation technique. The aim of this review is to describe the characteristics of dance programs developed for people with TBI, and to examine how stakeholders perceive these programs. Eight databases (MEDLINE, Scopus, Embase, CINAHL, Web of Science, SPORTDiscus, PsycINFO, and ProQuest Dissertations and Theses) were searched for studies on dance and TBI. Seven eligible articles were identified, involving a total of 22 dance participants with TBI and a further three people with TBI in a control group. The most common dance techniques used were dance movement therapy, improvisation, meditative movement, and mirroring. Modifications to programs included one-on-one delivery, individual tailoring with strategies to assist with cognitive or mobility barriers, and support from clinicians or assistants. Overall, the dance programs were feasible to deliver and acceptable to participants. Three studies revealed mixed evidence of efficacy in terms of motor fitness outcomes (e.g., balance and mobility), and there was insufficient evidence for efficacy in terms of cognition, neuroplasticity, and psychosocial outcomes. The review makes recommendations to enhance the safety and sustainability of dance for the neurorehabilitation population and to improve the standardized reporting of program design and execution to advance the field.

Ambreen Gowani; Colleen Norris; Gail Low; Khairulnissa Ajani; Ahmed Noor; Matthias Hoben PLoS ONE, 2026, Vol. 21, Issue 10, pp. e0360245 https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0360245

چکیده

Several tools measure the Health-related quality of life (HRQOL) of people with chronic illnesses but evidence on their cross-cultural adaptation is limited. This study performed the cross-cultural adaptation of the Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire (MLHFQ) for use with Urdu speakers in Pakistan, while documenting the adaptation process in detail. This methodological study employed a structured cross-cultural adaptation and linguistic validation design. We incorporated a Delphi Pannel to the MAPI Research Trusts’ 5-step linguistic validation process. Two forward translators independently adapted and reconciled the Indian Urdu version of the MLHFQ for use in Pakistan. Using a modified Delphi approach comprising three Heart Failure patients and one cardiologist reviewed the translation for linguistic accuracy, cultural relevance, and comprehensiveness, identified problems and provided feedback that informed the Pakistani Urdu version 1.0. Two independent back translators translated version 1.0 back to English. The Principal Investigator and back translators reconciled back-translations and proposed changes that were approved by forward translators. Translations, reconciliation reports, and Delphi panel feedback were analyzed using inductive qualitative content analysis, resulting in four themes describing the methodological challenges and adaptation strategies encountered during cross-cultural adaptation: (1) direct transferring of compatible words from the Indian Urdu version to Pakistani Urdu version of the MLHFQ, (2) using indirect substitutes for words lacking direct Urdu equivalents, (3) balancing the tone of written and spoken Urdu, and (4) incorporating contextual nuances within each element of the tool. This study successfully adapted the MLHFQ for Urdu-speaking patients with Heart Failure in Pakistan while systematically documenting the linguistic, cultural, and contextual challenges encountered throughout the adaptation process. The findings offer valuable methodological insights for researchers adapting HRQOL tools and provide quality evidence regarding the use of the MLHFQ for use with Urdu speakers in Pakistan.
