"Comedy Is Tragedy + Time": Humor and Trauma in Life Is Beautiful (1998)
This essay examines how Roberto Benigni’s Life Is Beautiful (1997/1998) uses comedy to represent Holocaust trauma. Taking the proposition that comedy emerges from tragedy through time as its point of departure, it considers the ethics of humor in representing collective catastrophe. Through the film’s Chaplinesque performance, fairy-tale structure, restrained depiction of violence, and Guido’s imaginative protection of his son, the discussion situates Benigni within Italian cinema’s treatment of Fascism and historical memory. The essay revisits debates about historical authenticity and Holocaust representation, arguing that humor can invite ethical reflection as well as controversy. It considers the limits of cinematic representation and humor’s uneasy relationship to historical suffering, survival, and collective memory.
