چکیده

Tilt refers to an ability pattern based on within person differences in two distinct abilities (e.g., verbal and math), yielding relative strength in one ability (e.g., math) and relative weakness in another (e.g., verbal). The current study is the first to examine age and sex differences in math-verbal tilt from 13- to 17-years. Test scores were obtained from the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery in the 1997 National Longitudinal Survey of Youth ( N = 6969), a nationally representative sample of adolescents in the United States. Tilt was based on differences in math and verbal scores, yielding math tilt (indicating math strength) and verbal tilt (indicating verbal strength). Other variables included processing speed and general intelligence ( g ), which were expected to facilitate the acquisition of specific abilities that produce tilt. Contrary to research on sex differences in vocational preferences, levels of math and verbal tilt were higher in males than females. In addition, both sexes showed large tilt effects from zero ( d > 1.00), where zero indicates no tilt (i.e., no difference in math and verbal scores), indicating large levels of math or verbal tilt within individuals. The large tilt effects from zero support investment theories, which assume that individuals seek out and select activities in specific domains that boost analogous types of tilts. Finally, age-related increases in tilt were observed for males and females and were mediated by speed and g . Such a pattern supports cascade theories, which assume that speed and g facilitate the acquisition of specific abilities, which boost analogous forms of tilt. Future research should consider age and sex differences in tilt in different developmental periods (e.g., late adulthood) and at different ability levels (e.g., gifted and intellectually disabled).

Relevansi Nilai-Nilai Peradaban Islam dalam Pengembangan Pendidikan Modern di Era Digital

Arifah Khoirunnisaa; Lisan Nulhasanah Tadabbur Jurnal Peradaban Islam, 2026, Vol. 8, Issue 2 https://doi.org/10.22373/tadabbur.v8i2.1090

چکیده

Islamic civilization is one of the major civilizations that has significantly contributed to the development of science and education worldwide. During its golden age, it established educational institutions, fostered scholarly traditions, and produced influential scholars whose ideas continue to shape modern knowledge in the digital era. This article examines the relevance of Islamic civilizational values to the development of modern education through qualitative library research using thematic content analysis. The findings show that Islamic education was distinguished by four interrelated values, namely a strong culture of literacy, the integration of religious and general knowledge, an emphasis on moral formation (akhlak), and openness to knowledge from other civilizations, which together enabled scholars to advance science while upholding ethical and social responsibility. These values are highly relevant to addressing contemporary educational challenges, including declining critical literacy, uncritical dependence on digital technology and artificial intelligence, and the ongoing crisis of learners’ character. These values can inform the development of a modern educational system that integrates critical thinking, digital literacy, character education, and lifelong learning while maintaining moral and social responsibility.

Pendampingan Pembelajaran Al-Islam dan Kemuhammadiyahan bagi Remaja Yayasan Cahaya Ilmu di Dusun Lawang Kuta

Anugrah Giffari; Dina Mardiana Indonesia Berdampak: Jurnal Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat, 2026 https://doi.org/10.63822/btzdym10

چکیده

Yayasan Cahaya Ilmu is a social and religious institution in Lawang Kuta Hamlet, Lembar Village, West Lombok Regency, that fosters 11 adolescent and young adult beneficiaries aged 13–18 years with orphan, double-orphan, and underprivileged family backgrounds. Prior to this program, the beneficiaries had not received structured mentoring in Al-Islam and Kemuhammadiyahan (AIK), consistent with national data indicating high school dropout rates in West Nusa Tenggara. This community service program aimed to improve participants' understanding of Islamic values, cultivate knowledge of Muhammadiyah's ideology, and build noble character and independence. The method adapted a Participatory Action Research approach, implemented over one month through eight scheduled visits (twice weekly), combined with independent daily worship habituation supervised by the foundation's mentor. Results showed improvement across all indicators: the average AIK comprehension score increased from 50.5 to 80.6 (scale of 100); 91% of participants were able to perform prayer according to fiqh standards; 91% showed improvement in Qur'anic recitation quality using the tahsin method and 100% of participants successfully memorized five short surahs. Outputs produced include a two-volume AIK module, Qur'anic storyboards, daily worship monitoring tables, and the establishment of an independent study circle (halaqah mandiri) as a form of program sustainability.

Interaction between self-efficacy and coach expectation pressure on adolescent athletes’ performance

Avry Ramadhan Bastian; Rizky Putra Santosa Cognicia, 2026, Vol. 14, Issue 2, pp. 130-136 https://doi.org/10.22219/cognicia.v14i2.46471

چکیده

This study aimed to examine the role of self-efficacy and pressure of coach expectations in predicting the performance of adolescent athletes. This study used a cross-sectional survey design involving 142 athletes aged 16–19 years from regional and national sports clubs. Data analysis included Pearson correlation test, independent-samples t-test, and multiple linear regression. The results showed that self-efficacy was positively and significantly associated with athlete performance, while coach expectation pressure was negatively and significantly related to athlete performance. In addition, there were differences in performance by gender, with male athletes reporting higher performance scores than female athletes. When gender was included as a control variable in the regression model, self-efficacy and coach expectations pressure remained significant predictors of athlete performance. Overall, these findings suggest that internal psychological factors and pressures from the sports environment play a role in explaining variations in adolescent athlete performance. This study emphasizes the importance of strengthening self-efficacy and the application of realistic and supportive expectations of coaches in the process of coaching athletes. Further longitudinal research is needed to examine this relationship in more depth.

Interpersonal Stressors and Adolescent Mental Health During COVID-19: Investigating the Role of Loneliness

Atina Manvelian; Erica Marie Szkody; Katherine A Cohen; Jessica Lee Schleider Child Psychiatry & Human Development, 2026 https://doi.org/10.1007/s10578-026-02113-4

چکیده

Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic created social disruptions, leading to high levels of mental health problems for adolescents. Interpersonal stressors, such as lack of familial support, peer victimization, and discrimination, may have further exacerbated teen mental health issues. Yet, the psychological impact of interpersonal stressors and their interactive effects with high levels of loneliness remains unknown. In this pre-registered study , conducted in November and December 2020 (approximately eight months into the COVID-19 pandemic), we used a diverse sample of adolescents from across 43 U.S. states with elevated depressive symptoms (n = 2,452, ages 13–16) to examine how familial support, peer victimization, and discrimination are concurrently associated with mental health outcomes. Results indicated that perceived discrimination was the strongest standardized correlate across continuous internalizing outcomes (depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, and hopelessness), whereas lack of familial support was the primary correlate of suicidal ideation; if youth reported a lack of familial support, they were over three times as likely to report suicidal ideation. Loneliness significantly moderated the cross-sectional links between lack of familial support and depressive symptoms, as well as perceived discrimination and hopelessness. Simple slope probing demonstrated a distress ceiling effect: interpersonal stressors were most strongly associated with elevated distress among youth reporting low baseline loneliness, whereas youth experiencing high loneliness exhibited consistently elevated distress regardless of stressor exposure. These findings underscore interpersonal stressors and loneliness as high-priority targets for youth prevention and intervention programs, particularly during periods of widespread social disruption.
