Simge KOÇ; Bulent Cavas; Josip Burušić Science education international, 2026, Vol. 37, Issue 3, pp. 248-260 https://doi.org/10.33828/sei.v37.i3.4

Educational psychology plays a critical role in preparing future Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) teachers by supporting evidence-based instructional practices and the development of transversal competencies. This study evaluates the effectiveness of Educational Psychology in a STEM Fields module developed within the Erasmus+ academy for STEM teachers project for preservice science teachers. A quantitative single-group pre-test–post-test quasi-experimental design is employed with 54 participants. The blended 4-week module integrates face-to-face and online learning activities focusing on educational psychology, teacher proactivity, time management, and collaborative work. The results indicate a statistically significant improvement in participants’ transversal STEM competencies following the intervention, with no significant gender differences observed. Descriptive findings further show notable improvements in inclusive instructional design, educational psychology-based decision-making, and collaborative learning. Participants also report high levels of self-perceived thematic competence and overall satisfaction with the module. Overall, the findings suggest that integrating educational psychology into STEM teacher education can effectively enhance pre-service teachers’ pedagogical competencies, foster essential transversal skills, and support more inclusive and evidence-informed STEM teaching.

Integrated into the cross-border teacher education movement, a flexible model of co-supervision was developed and piloted involving 14 Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) teacher educators and 13 of their pre-service teachers from eight European countries, within the context of the Erasmus+ project “AcaSTEMy.” The study follows a qualitative and interpretative approach and presents the validation of the flexible model of co-supervision to understand not only its potentialities for pre-service teachers’ and teacher educators’ professional development, but also to discuss its degree of cross-national applicability. All participants answered an online questionnaire at the end of each co-supervision event, and one representative of the teacher educators of each country wrote a guided reflection. The findings highlight a central tension within this type of co-supervision process, having the potential to enhance both pre-service teachers’ learning, fostering critical reflection and promoting some skills development, and supervisor professional development, facilitating peer learning and professional networking. However, its success depends heavily on organizational structure, clarity of roles, and support for intercultural communication. In the end, the study presents some suggestions for the design of international co-supervision models in teacher education, so that co-supervision can promote both academic excellence and internationalization in higher education.

The Erasmus+ acaSTEMy Teacher Academy project seeks to operationalize a future-oriented approach to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) teacher education that connects disciplinary learning with authentic societal challenges. This conceptual paper synthesizes research-informed principles underpinning the project and explains how they are translated into teacher professional learning. The framework positions integrated STEM education as problem-centered learning that combines scientific inquiry, engineering design, mathematical reasoning, digital technologies, and responsible societal decision-making. It brings together transversal and transformative competences, sustainability education, systems thinking, digital confidence, strategic thinking, and career awareness within a three-stage model that moves from socio-scientific relevance through inquiry and conceptual learning to reflection and evidence-informed action. These principles are operationalized through teacher-education modules, micro-credentials, job shadowing, mobility, and professional-learning networks. The paper argues that the main contribution of the acaSTEMy project lies not in proposing a single universal teaching model but in providing a coherent and adaptable framework for translating contemporary STEM-education priorities into teacher development and classroom practice across diverse European contexts. It also identifies implementation challenges related to disciplinary traditions, resources, institutional capacity, and the need for longer-term evaluation.
