Teachers’ questioning strategies and students’ critical thinking in Ethiopian English as a foreign language classrooms: a mixed-methods study
Although critical thinking is a vital 21st-century skill, Ethiopian English as Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms remain largely teacher-centered and dominated by low-order questioning. The link between teachers’ questioning strategies and students’ critical thinking development has been insufficiently studied in Ethiopia. This study investigated the types of questions used by EFL teachers, the levels of students’ critical thinking, and the predictive relationship between questioning practices and critical thinking outcomes. A convergent parallel mixed-methods design (primarily quantitative) was employed with 342 secondary students and 28 EFL teachers from six schools in Central Ethiopia. Data were collected using a classroom observation checklist, a Teacher Questioning Strategy Inventory, and a Critical Thinking Test. Quantitative analyses included descriptive statistics, multilevel modeling, and multiple linear regression with cluster-robust standard errors. Qualitative data from 15 stimulated recall interviews supplemented the findings. Results showed that teachers predominantly used lower-order questions (78%), with only 22% requiring higher-order thinking. Students’ mean critical thinking score was 41.6/100 (SD = 12.3), below proficiency benchmarks. Multilevel analysis identified wait time ( β = 0.38, p < 0.001) and follow-up probing ( β = 0.31, p = 0.003) as the strongest predictors of critical thinking, with all teacher-level variables collectively explaining 52% of the between-teacher variance. Qualitatively, teachers reported that higher-order questions would “slow down the syllabus” and that students lacked sufficient English proficiency to respond effectively. These findings suggest that pre-service and in-service training should explicitly teach questioning taxonomies and wait-time techniques. Therefore, the Ministry of Education should train secondary school teachers to allocate lesson time for higher-order questioning and integrate critical thinking as an essential part of their lessons .
