A conceptual framework: what is impactful learning? A case study of teaching organic chemistry for pre-medical students

Organic chemistry occupies a contested place in pre-health education: required of nearly all premedical students, experienced as difficult, and justified on grounds that it “teaches you to think”, a claim too vague to evaluate or teach toward deliberately. Existing frameworks do not resolve this tension. This paper adopts a conceptual analysis approach, drawing on Ausubel's rote/meaningful learning distinction and the traditional transfer-of-learning literature, to propose impactful learning as a third pedagogical stage following rote and meaningful learning. Impactful learning is defined as the stage where procedural and reasoning skills exercised in mastering a discipline's content become generalizable cognitive tools deployable outside that discipline. Three key concepts are examined: the unit of transfer (the cognitive procedure, not the content), the extraction dimension (detachment of a practiced operation from the content that trained it), and the conditions under which such transfer becomes pedagogically achievable. These concepts are developed through three organic chemistry tasks as worked examples—resonance structures as constraint-satisfaction reasoning, reaction mechanisms as iterative-hypothesis testing, and stereochemistry as symbolic-to-spatial translation—each mapped onto a corresponding form of clinical reasoning. We further propose a four-step explicit transfer scaffolding model (Name, Perform, Bridge, Generate) as a testable methodological companion, grounded in Gick and Holyoak's analogical transfer research and Detterman's critique of spontaneous far transfer. The paper argues that naming impactful learning as a distinct pedagogical target, rather than assuming it as an automatic byproduct of meaningful understanding, has direct implications for instructional design and assessment in service courses across STEM disciplines.
