The politics of curriculum transformation in South African higher education
Liberation heritage occupies a central place in South Africa’s political and intellectual landscape, yet its implications for curriculum transformation in higher education remain under-theorised. While post-apartheid universities have increasingly embraced calls for the decolonisation and Africanisation of knowledge, debates surrounding curriculum reform often invoke liberation narratives without critically interrogating how these historical legacies shape contemporary knowledge production. This article offers a conceptual analysis of the relationship between liberation heritage and the politics of curriculum transformation in South African higher education. The paper draws on the critical pedagogical framework of Paulo Freire, particularly his work Pedagogy of the Oppressed, to reconceptualise curriculum transformation as part of a broader project of intellectual and political liberation. From this perspective, education is understood not merely as a site of knowledge transmission but as a terrain of struggle where historical relations of power, domination, and resistance are reproduced and contested. The article argues that liberation heritage functions both as a symbolic resource and as a contested political discourse within contemporary debates on curriculum reform. By engaging key concepts within Critical Pedagogy, Curriculum Studies, and Political Science, the article develops a conceptual framework that links liberation heritage to processes of epistemic transformation in higher education. It contends that the persistence of colonial epistemological structures within university curricula reflects a tension between the historical ideals of liberation and the institutional realities of post-apartheid knowledge systems. The paper therefore proposes that meaningful curriculum transformation requires moving beyond symbolic invocations of liberation toward pedagogical praxis that cultivates critical consciousness and epistemic plurality. In doing so, the article contributes to emerging debates on decolonisation, liberation heritage, and the politics of knowledge production in twenty-first-century Africa.
