Life Skills Education in EMRS through the Lens of EMRS Teachers
Life Skills Education (LSE) is now a crucial element of holistic learning in the 21st century, with the focus on the socio-emotional, cognitive, and behavioural progression among students. LSE is of special importance in the context of Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS) as the schools cater to the needs of Scheduled Tribe (ST) students, where socio-cultural, linguistic, and economic issues impact them. This qualitative research which has been sponsored by the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) under the major and minor research project for the session 2024-2025 investigated the opinions and best practices as well as assessment methods of teachers in reference to LSE in EMRS, even as the study explored the connection between tribal culture and the development of life skills. The semi-structured interviews were used to collect data on 20 EMRS teachers in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh and were analysed thematically. The results of the study indicate that educators have a general perception of what life skills entail and how LSE is significant in equipping students to address real-life issues. The attitude of teachers towards the inclusion of LSE in the school curricula was positive, and the approaches that were considered to be effective were group activities, role-play, and collaborative learning. There exist gaps, though, arising because of insufficient training, no formal teaching modules and no formal assessment techniques. The research recommends the significance of culturally contextualised pedagogies, teacher capacity building and well-organised assessment frameworks to reinforce the LSE delivery and guarantee effective socio-emotional development in tribal students.
