Recently, Early Childhood Care and Learning has become a central point in the South African education spectrum. Unfortunately, this sector faces challenges, especially in economically challenged societies. Practitioners are not receiving sufficient professional development from relevant government departments, and they also struggle to find teaching and learning resources due to the prevalent socio-economic issues in the societies where their centres are located. This interpretive project, which is premised on Participatory Action Learning and Action Research as a research design, was conceptualised to support early childhood practitioners and parents in creating diverse teaching media, using recyclable materials. Engagements with practitioners after the implementation stage indicate the following: children enjoy manipulating recyclable material, practitioners value recyclable material; practitioners appreciate new pedagogical strategies; activities involving recyclable material improve children’s vocabulary significantly; the activities cement schemata; interaction in literacy classrooms improves critical skills such as critical thinking, effective listening, following instructions, speaking, problem-solving, and communication. The project concludes that literacy instruction using recyclable materials in early childhood learning may sustainably improve literacy.

در سال‌های اخیر، مراقبت و یادگیری اوایل کودکی به نقطه کانونی در طیف آموزش آفریقای جنوبی تبدیل شده‌است. متأسفانه این بخش با چالش‌هایی به‌ویژه در جوامع دارای مشکلات اقتصادی مواجه است. مربیان توسعه حرفه‌ای کافی از سوی نهادهای دولتی ذی‌ربط دریافت نمی‌کنند و همچنین به دلیل مسائل اجتماعی‌ـ‌اقتصادی رایج در جوامعی که مراکز آن‌ها در آن قرار دارد، در یافتن منابع آموزشی و یادگیری با مشکل روبه‌رو هستند. این پژوهش تفسیری که مبتنی بر یادگیری مشارکتی عملی و پژوهش عملی به عنوان طرح پژوهشی است، با هدف حمایت از مربیان و والدین اوایل کودکی در خلق رسانه‌های آموزشی متنوع با استفاده از مواد قابل بازیافت طراحی شده‌است. تعامل با مربیان پس از مرحله اجرا نشان می‌دهد: کودکان از دست‌ورزی با مواد قابل بازیافت لذت می‌برند؛ مربیان برای مواد قابل بازیافت ارزش قائل‌اند؛ مربیان از راهبردهای نوین آموزشی استقبال می‌کنند؛ فعالیت‌های مبتنی بر مواد قابل بازیافت به طور معناداری واژگان کودکان را بهبود می‌بخشد؛ این فعالیت‌ها طرح‌واره‌ها را تثبیت می‌کند؛ تعامل در کلاس‌های سوادآموزی مهارت‌های مهمی چون تفکر انتقادی، شنیدن مؤثر، پیروی از دستورالعمل‌ها، سخن گفتن، حل مسئله و ارتباط را ارتقا می‌دهد. این پژوهش نتیجه می‌گیرد که آموزش سواد با استفاده از مواد قابل بازیافت در یادگیری اوایل کودکی می‌تواند به طور پایدار سواد را بهبود بخشد.
