Family cultural capital and academic achievement in a smaller-city Chinese high-school context: evidence from Linfen
Linfen
Purpose Family cultural capital is an established explanation of educational inequality, and its relationship with academic achievement has been examined in previous Chinese research. Rather than proposing a new cultural-capital construct, this study provides an extension by examining the relative associations of cultural resources, parental education level and parent-child communication with academic achievement among high school students in Linfen, Shanxi Province. Methodology The study focuses on a smaller-city educational setting that has received less attention than national datasets and major metropolitan contexts in the literature considered here. A cross-sectional questionnaire survey was administered to 200 students aged 16–18 from two high schools in Linfen, Shanxi Province, selected through stratified cluster sampling. Academic achievement was measured using students’ reported end-of-term performance across three municipal examination subjects. Findings Correlation and regression analyses showed that all three dimensions were significantly and positively associated with academic outcomes, with parental education level showing the strongest association. The combined model accounted for nearly 69% of the variance in academic performance. The findings suggest that cultural resources, parental education level and meaningful parent-child communication are interrelated dimensions of the family context, but the results should not be interpreted as evidence of mediation because mediation effects were not formally tested. Originality Accordingly, the contribution of the study lies not in claiming novelty for the individual variables, but in examining whether established family cultural-capital relationships remain observable, and with what relative strength, within this specific high-school context. Implications The findings offer practical implications for family-school collaboration and context-sensitive educational support.
