Speaking is an essential skill in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning. However, many EFL students experience difficulties in developing speaking proficiency due to limited opportunities for oral practice, speaking anxiety, low confidence, and insufficient interaction. Although previous studies have examined Digital Game-Based Learning (DGBL) in English language education, their findings are distributed across different platforms, learning contexts, and outcomes. Therefore, a systematic review is needed to provide a broader understanding of how DGBL contributes to EFL speaking development and how different platforms support this process. This study aims to examine the effects of DGBL on EFL students' speaking skills and identify the digital platforms used in speaking instruction. A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) was conducted by analyzing 20 selected studies through a systematic selection process based on predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria. The findings indicate that DGBL can support speaking development by providing opportunities for oral practice, increasing motivation and participation, strengthening confidence, and reducing speaking anxiety. The review also identifies Kahoot!, Quizizz, Wordwall, Duolingo, mobile game-based applications, and other digital game environments as platforms used in EFL learning.
The article substantiates the feasibility of adaptive foreign language phonetics teaching, enhanced by artificial intelligence technologies, as an alternative to traditional standardized methods that fail to account for higher education students' individual articulatory features and lead to persistent phonetic errors. The study is interdisciplinary, combining the methodology of specialties A4 Secondary Education (A4.021 English Language and Literature), A5 Vocational Education (A5.39 Digital Technologies), and F7 Computer Engineering. The purpose of the study is to develop and justify a model of an adaptive learning platform for improving higher education students' phonetic skills through the integration of speech formant synthesis with machine learning algorithms. A formant synthesizer model based on parallel digital filters has been developed, generating reference vowel sounds by simulating the resonant frequencies of the vocal tract. An approach to personalizing learning is proposed based on a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural network, which analyzes a student's error history and dynamically adjusts formant parameters in real time. Technical validation of the model demonstrated high accuracy of formant frequency correction, with a root-mean-square error of 45 Hz for the first formant and 78 Hz for the second, enabling objective assessment of pronunciation quality and adaptation of exercise difficulty to the individual student's level. A pilot quasi-experimental verification of the platform involving experimental and control groups of higher education students confirmed its pedagogical potential for implementing differentiated learning principles based on objective acoustic data. The conclusions confirm the platform's prospects for modernizing linguistic education. Further research directions include expanding empirical validation on a larger sample and conducting perceptual evaluation of synthesized speech quality by native speakers to confirm its naturalness and suitability for learning purposes.
Chemistry teaching is still based on traditional methods of memorization and repetition, a consequence of students' difficulty in understanding chemical models when contextualized pedagogical strategies are not employed. In this context, digital games emerge as a promising alternative to make teaching more dynamic, interactive, and accessible. This qualitative study aimed to analyze how digital games are perceived and used by undergraduate chemistry students during their training, understanding how this knowledge is articulated with academic productions on the subject. The research was conducted through a bibliographic survey, with a time frame from 2014 to 2024, using the Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations as a database. Additionally, a questionnaire was applied to 72 students of the Chemistry undergraduate course at a Federal University in the Northeast region of Brazil to understand their perceptions of digital games in the educational context. The results indicate that 98.6% of the students recognize the potential of digital games in chemistry learning. According to this result, 69.4% have already used these cultural artifacts to learn chemical concepts, which justifies 79.2% of respondents feeling familiar with this technology, emphasizing the emergence of a more connected society. Conversely, a significant lack of training on the use of Digital Games was identified, due to the absence of subjects addressing this topic in the curricula of Chemistry undergraduate courses that adhere to the Unified Selection System. It is concluded that this study highlights how Digital Games can significantly contribute to improving Chemistry teaching, provided there is adequate teacher training. Thus, it is essential that undergraduate courses include the pedagogical use of Digital Games in their curricula, promoting an educational practice aligned with contemporary demands and available technological possibilities.
Discourse competence plays a crucial role in preparing English as Second Language (ESL) learners to produce coherent and cohesive communication. Nevertheless, the effective use of cohesive devices remains a challenge for many ESL learners, hindering their ability to produce coherent and meaningful discourse. To address this issue, the Case of the Lost Linkers Digital Educational Escape Room (DEER) was developed as a gamified learning tool to support the development of discourse competence. This study aimed to investigate ESL learners’ acceptance of the DEER game using the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). A quantitative survey design was employed involving 151 ESL learners from a Malaysian public university. Data were collected using a five-section questionnaire consisting of demographic information and four TAM constructs: perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, attitude toward use, and behavioural intention to use. Descriptive analysis revealed high levels of acceptance across all constructs. Learners perceived the DEER game as useful, user-friendly, enjoyable, and effective for learning linkers and cohesive devices. They also expressed strong intentions to continue using and recommending the game. The findings suggest that DEER has considerable potential as an engaging and learner-centred tool for supporting discourse competence development in ESL contexts.
The ability to understand concepts is one of the important aspects in social studies learning because students are not only required to remember information, but also to be able to explain and apply concepts in various situations. However, the learning process that is still teacher-centered causes student involvement and motivation to learn is not optimal. This study aims to analyze the influence of the Teams Games Tournament (TGT) learning model assisted by Quizizz Paper Mode (Q-Card) on learning motivation and students' ability to understand concepts in food chain materials. This study uses a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental design method through a one-group pretest-posttest design. The research sample consisted of 30 students in class V of SDN Cisiram who were selected using saturated sampling techniques. Data were collected through concept comprehension tests, learning motivation questionnaires, and documentation, then analyzed using Wilcoxon, N-Gain, and effect size tests. The results showed an increase in concept comprehension ability with an average score increasing from 39.73 to 87.70, an N-Gain value of 0.78 with a high category, and an effect size of 0.617 which showed a strong influence. The application of TGT assisted by Q-Card was also able to increase students' involvement and learning motivation. Thus, the Quizizz Paper Mode (Q-Card)-assisted TGT model is effectively used as an alternative to IPAS learning to improve students' understanding of concepts and learning motivation.
The transition from secondary school to higher education is a critical period that shapes students' academic engagement, social integration, and persistence. Despite increased access to higher education in South Africa, many first-year students enter university with expectations that differ substantially from their subsequent experiences, creating adjustment challenges. Guided by Tinto's Theory of Student Integration and Educational Transition Theory, this study explored first-year students' expectations. It examined how students perceived and experienced mismatches between these expectations and the realities of university life. The study adopted an interpretivist qualitative research paradigm and an exploratory descriptive design. Data were collected through three focus group discussions with 21 purposively selected first-year students at a comprehensive university in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. They were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. The findings revealed an expectation–reality mismatch in three areas: social integration and peer relationships, course selection and academic guidance, and academic workload alongside self-directed learning demands. Participants who identified as first-generation students described experiencing additional transition difficulties, which they associated with limited social and cultural capital, inadequate career guidance, and low digital literacy. Participants also associated persistent socioeconomic inequality with these difficulties. The study concludes that expectation–reality mismatch is a psychologically meaningful mechanism through which structural inequality translates into experiences of uncertainty, diminished belonging, and academic disengagement during the first year. Strengthened orientation, mentoring, academic advising, and digital literacy support are recommended to improve student adjustment, engagement, and retention.
Student diversity poses a continuing challenge in higher education, particularly when common learning objectives must be maintained while providing flexibility in learning resources, activities, interaction, support, and assessment. This study examined students’ perceptions and acceptance of digitally supported differentiated learning in Information Technology Education. A quantitative cross-sectional descriptive survey was conducted with 35 students at Universitas Lampung, Indonesia, after the learning experience. Data were collected using a 31-item questionnaire rated on a four-point Likert scale, with reported high internal consistency (Cronbach’s α = 0.985), and were analyzed using means, standard deviations, and normalized mean scores. Students rated the five implementation dimensions favorably (M = 3.28, 81.88%). Digital pedagogical design received the highest rating (M = 3.34, 83.45%), whereas product and assessment differentiation received the lowest (M = 3.18, 79.57%). Technology-supported collaboration was the highest-rated individual item (M = 3.49, 87.14%), whereas choices in presentation formats and the timeliness of digital feedback received lower ratings. The secondary acceptance summary was similarly favorable (M = 3.31, 82.74%), with increased learning motivation receiving the highest rating. These findings identify digital support and collaboration as perceived strengths of the learning design, while flexibility in student products and the timeliness of feedback warrant further attention. Given the single-cohort, post-only design and absence of objective learning-outcome measures, the findings should be interpreted as context-specific evidence of students’ perceptions of implementation rather than evidence of causal effects on learning.
Digital technologies can expand opportunities for language practice, feedback, and access to learning materials, but their educational value depends on how they are integrated into instruction. This conceptual article draws on a selective narrative review to examine automatic speech recognition, conversational agents, machine translation, and virtual environments in language learning. It distinguishes the functions of these technologies from the learning outcomes that teachers must evaluate. The discussion identifies opportunities for pronunciation practice, sustained interaction, reflective revision, and contextualized communication, alongside problems involving unreliable feedback, cognitive demands, unequal access, and personal data. Alpha School is considered briefly as an institutional illustration of adaptive learning and human guidance, rather than as evidence of foreign-language learning effectiveness. Four proposed classroom applications show how teachers can connect digital activity to observable language performance. The article argues that responsible integration requires clear learning objectives, appropriate scaffolding, human review of feedback, and opportunities to demonstrate learning beyond the original tool. Its contribution is a practical framework for evaluating instructional use; the proposed applications require subsequent classroom investigation.
Students’ learning outcomes in Informatics remain a challenge when conventional instructional media offer limited interaction, contributing to passive engagement and difficulties understanding learning materials. This study examined changes in Grade X students’ learning outcomes after the implementation of Wordwall-assisted interactive learning media for the Computer Systems topic at SMAN 1 Sawahlunto, Indonesia. A quantitative approach was employed using a pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design involving 30 students from class X E4. Students completed a multiple-choice achievement test before instruction, participated in Computer Systems learning activities supported by Wordwall, and completed a posttest afterward. The intervention incorporated game-based activities to support practice and engagement; however, the research records did not specify its duration. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and a paired-samples t-test, with normalized gain (N-Gain) used to assess the level of improvement. The mean score increased from 53.67 on the pretest to 77.67 on the posttest, a difference of 24.00 points. The paired-samples t-test identified a statistically significant difference between scores (t = 8.664, df = 29, p < 0.001). The mean N-Gain was 0.538, indicating moderate improvement. These results show that students’ scores were higher after the Wordwall-assisted learning intervention. Nevertheless, the study did not include a control group, the observed change cannot be attributed to Wordwall alone; instructional or testing-related factors may also have contributed. Wordwall therefore be considered a useful supplementary medium for Informatics instruction, while further studies using control groups, larger samples, and documented intervention durations are needed to strengthen conclusions about its effectiveness.
This conceptual narrative review stems from a doctoral study that focuses on the teaching of values in the implementation of the secondary school curriculum in Zimbabwe. The Zimbabwean secondary school history curriculum provides for values inculcation grounded on Ubuntu. However, despite expansive research on the implications of Ubuntu on instructional practice, there is a gap on how it informs pedagogy for values teaching in secondary school history education. The study employed a qualitative approach which enabled an indepth exploration. The review focused on twelve papers on Ubuntu’s application on pedagogy and ten on values pedagogy in secondary school history education that were obtained from Scopus, Google Scholar and ERIC academic databases. Keywords such as Ubuntu and pedagogy, values education and secondary school history education as well as abstracts were used to select the reviewed papers. Thematic analysis was employed to analyse data which involved coding of relevant information to develop themes. Findings show that Ubuntu oriented pedagogy is interactive, practical oriented, learner centered and speaks to the experiences of learners. This paper provides insights on how history teachers can translate Ubuntu pedagogy to instil values in secondary school history education. For this to be effective, we recommend staff development of history teachers by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, use of diverse learner centered pedagogy in history lessons by history teachers and provision of multimedia to secondary schools by relevant stakeholders to ensure creation of engaging learning experiences in the implementation of the history curriculum.
Abstract Online education in Japanese universities expanded rapidly during the COVID-19 pandemic, exposing both the genuine value of flexible learning formats and the structural conditions required to make them effective. While students consistently appreciated the temporal and spatial autonomy of online study, research has identified persistent challenges including isolation, physical and psychological fatigue, assignment overload, declining motivation, and inequities in digital access and ICT literacy. This paper presents a narrative synthesis of recent empirical studies on online learning in Japanese higher education, arguing that student success is associated with the coordinated integration of three interdependent dimensions. Drawing on national surveys, institutional reports, and case-based research, the paper proposes the Flexibility–Structure–Support (FSS) Model, in which flexibility without adequate pedagogical structure may increase the risk of disengagement, while structure without sufficient institutional support may contribute to uneven and inequitable learning experiences. Effective instructional design—integrating active learning, motivating assignments, meaningful feedback, and blended formats—must be accompanied by investment in infrastructure, systematic faculty development, and explicit support for student self-regulated learning. Implications for course design, program coordination, and institutional policy are discussed, along with limitations and directions for future research.
The article highlights the use of a Venn diagram in military education as a tool for comparing close concepts and substantiating their general and distinctive features. Based on methodical sources related to graphic organization, a conditional training session designed to study command and leadership activities is developed. Pre-defining comparison criteria, placing features with evidence, and formulating a written conclusion based on the diagram are proposed. The importance of the method is revealed in avoiding the strict antithesis of concepts and demonstrating their mutual relationship.
The article substantiates a four-stage theoretical model for developing critical thinking competence in pre-service English teachers. Each stage is linked to problem-based, project-based, collaborative learning and reflective writing; indicators and a three-level scale are proposed.

One of the major challenges university students often face before graduating is preparing to transition into the workforce, a task made even more demanding after the Covid-19 pandemic. This phenomenological study explores how final-year students describe their career preparedness experiences in the post-pandemic era. In-depth interviews were conducted with four final-year students at a Malaysian public university. They were selected through a purposive sampling technique. The interview data were analysed using thematic analysis. The findings revealed five themes related to the students’ career preparedness experiences: expectations and realities, exposure to real work settings, promoting positive outcomes via preparation, development of professional identity, and acquisition of critical skills. The study recommends collaboration with selected secondary schools in exposing students to various client issues before practicum and internship training to further develop their counselling competencies and increase their career preparedness level.
Against the backdrop of deepening industry-education integration in vocational education and AI-driven digital transformation, productive teaching projects face not only the perennial challenge of transforming authentic production tasks into teachable activities, but also new challenges such as rapid resource obsolescence, heterogeneous learner foundations, and insufficient evidence for process-based assessment. Taking the “Deployment and Maintenance of a Navigation Data Storage Platform” task from the Yangtze River Trunk-Line Ship Water Pollutant Joint Supervision and Service Information System as a case, this study builds on the six-stage process of Select→Deconstruct→Define→Transform→Integrate→Extend and develops a human–AI collaborative mechanism characterized by real projects as the carrier, job competencies as the main line, and AI-supported cognition as the support. To strengthen AI empowerment across project development and implementation, AI is embedded in project selection, work-process deconstruction, competency definition, teaching-task transformation, curriculum integration, and resource expansion, and is integrated with IDEAL project-based learning, multi-stakeholder whole-process assessment, “dual-teacher + AI assistant” collaboration, and a blended virtual–real training environment. This study provides a reference for IT-related programs seeking to build replicable and iteratively improvable AI-empowered productive teaching projects.
The advancement of digital technology and the evolving demands of the professional landscape require vocational high school (SMK) students to possess a level of work readiness that aligns with the needs of the business and industrial sectors. However, preliminary research involving students in the Office Management and Business Services (MPLB) program at SMKN 2 Tuban indicates that their work readiness is not yet optimal; this is evidenced by limitations in seeking and utilizing information, as well as a mismatch between the competencies they possess and the requirements of the workplace. This situation underscores the importance of this study, which aims to identify the factors influencing the work readiness of MPLB students at SMKN 2 Tuban. Specifically, this research analyzes the impact of digital literacy, independent learning, and the use of information technology on the work readiness of these students, both individually and collectively. This study examines how peer learning, mentoring, and alumni engagement jointly relate to student employability, using bibliometric and thematic analysis of 117 peer-reviewed articles indexed in Scopus (2010–2025). Publications increased markedly after 2019, reflecting growing scholarly interest in this area. Three interdependent thematic clusters emerged: peer learning as a foundation for teaching and learning practice; mentoring and experiential learning as supports for post-graduation career development; and alumni relations as a bridge between universities and workplaces. Based on these patterns, the study proposes a developmental ecosystem model of employability integrating pedagogy, relationships, and experiential learning, and suggests management education is shifting toward experiential, network-based approaches.
The article provides a theoretical analysis of the problem of implementing project activity in the educational process of primary school. The latest publications on the problem are studied and a discussion of scientists on the analysis of such categories as "project activity", "project method", "interactive interaction", "project skills and abilities" is presented. The particularities of the functioning of project activity from a psychological and pedagogical perspective are determined. It is stated that the specified activity is implemented in the course of introducing the “project method” into the educational process, which is defined by scientists in different ways: as a specific practice of teachers' work aimed at forming a certain system of intellectual and practical skills in students; as a comprehensive teaching method; as a pedagogical technology; as a learning system. It is noted that the definition of the project method as a comprehensive teaching method is based on its vision as a set of methodological techniques of a exploratory nature aimed at achieving a certain educational goal. It is stated that in the course of project activity, the project skills of primary school teachers are developed, which include the following: to carry out prospective planning of strategic, tactical and operational tasks and methods of solution; to foresee possible options for solving a system of pedagogical tasks; to outline the results that need to be achieved in the course of performing a particular work; to set and to implement the goals of independent work. It is determined that forming project activity of younger schoolchildren proceeds in several stages: first they get acquainted with a new type of activity, realizing its content; then they master it in a partial format; finally, they independently develop educational projects. The prospects for further scientific explorations are identified as a research into practical ways of implementing the project activity of younger schoolchildren by using innovative digital tools.
