A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF WRITING SKILLS IN INTELLECTUALLY DISABLED BOYS VERSUS GIRLS AT THE SECONDARY LEVEL RAIPUR, CHHATTISGARH

Sadhana Nayak Journal of Integrative Science and Societal Impact, 2026, Vol. 2, Issue 3, pp. 16-19 https://doi.org/10.29121/jissi.v2.i3.2026.109

چکیده

This research study was conducted to provide a comparative analysis of the writing skills of intellectually disabled boys and girls studying at the secondary level. The primary objective of the study was to test the hypothesis that "intellectually disabled boys at the secondary level will exhibit higher writing skills compared to intellectually disabled girls." A total of 60 intellectually disabled students (30 boys and 30 girls, aged 12–18 years) were selected from special and inclusive schools in the Raipur district (Chhattisgarh) using purposive random sampling. Data were collected using a standardized 'Writing Skill Assessment Scale' (WSAS), which evaluated fine motor skills, shape imitation, clarity of letters/words, and copying speed. Statistical analysis of the data was performed using the mean, standard deviation (SD), and t-test. The results indicated no statistically significant difference between the scores of boys (M=54.20, SD=8.15) and girls (M=52.80, SD=8.40) (t=0.65, p=.518). Consequently, the formulated hypothesis is rejected. The study concludes that, in the context of intellectual disability, the development of writing skills is not gender-dependent but rather relies on individual motor coordination and regular practice.

Impact of Online Classes on Students with Learning Disabilities

Mubassira K C; Chethana R Acharya International Journal of Science and Research (IJSR), 2026, Vol. 15, Issue 10, pp. 1999-2000 https://doi.org/10.21275/sr261028131731

چکیده

Online learning can improve access to educational materials, but it may also create additional demands for school-aged learners who experience learning disabilities. This study examined perceived academic, emotional, behavioural, and adaptation-related outcomes of online classes among students in Grades 1-10 with learning difficulties, drawing on student, parent, and teacher reports. The dissertation describes a quantitative, cross-sectional survey involving 95 participants and the use of the Learning Disabilities Checklist (LDC), Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), Online Learning Readiness Scale (OLRS), and a researcher-developed questionnaire. Reported findings indicate difficulties with attention, comprehension, task completion, and motivation in online settings, alongside lower perceived academic performance than in traditional classrooms. Parent and teacher reports were associated with students? reported learning difficulties. A significant association was reported between student and teacher reports, χ2(1, N = 95) = 20.5, p < .001, φ = .465; a similar association was reported for student and parent reports, χ2(1, N = 95) = 21.0, p < .001, φ = .471. Student and parent reports of emotional wellbeing were also positively correlated, ρ = .674, p < .001. The findings suggest that online learning requires structured routines, accessible teaching materials, trained educators, and coordinated family-school support to better accommodate learners with learning disabilities. Results should be interpreted cautiously because detailed descriptive scores and an effect estimate for the academic comparison were not reported consistently in the dissertation.

Trajectories of syntactic complexity and subordination across Spanish and English in bilingual children with and without developmental language disorder

Lourdes Martinez-Nieto; Kendra Ames; María Adelaida Restrepo; Carol Mesa; Melissa Pierce-Rivera; Theresa Moen; … Frontiers in Education, 2026, Vol. 11, pp. 1940578 https://doi.org/10.3389/feduc.2026.1940578

چکیده

Purpose This longitudinal study examined the development of complex syntax in Spanish–English bilingual children with and without developmental language disorder (DLD) from prekindergarten (PK) to 3rd grade. We evaluated syntactic complexity and grammaticality using Subordination Index (SI) and ungrammaticality (UG), overall subordinate clause use using the percentage of complex utterances, and subordinate clause-type development (nominal, adverbial, and relative clauses) in English and Spanish. Method Fifty-four bilingual children (39 typically developing TDL, 15 DLD) completed narrative retells in English and Spanish in PK, 1st, and 3rd grade. Language samples were analyzed using SALT-derived SI and UG measures, and utterances were coded for subordinate clause presence and type. Linear mixed models examined the effects of Grade and Group separately by language and outcome. Results Both groups showed developmental increases in syntactic complexity and subordination across grades, but patterns differed by language. In English, TDL and DLD children showed broadly similar growth, with no significant group differences in SI, overall subordinate clause use, or clause-type production. In Spanish, the heritage language, group differences were more pronounced. TDL children showed significant gains in overall subordination and nominal clause use, whereas children with DLD showed limited growth after 1st grade. Clause-type analyses revealed reduced growth and lower diversity of subordinate clauses in Spanish among children with DLD, particularly for nominal clauses. Conclusions Complex syntax developed in both groups across languages; however, Spanish showed greater vulnerability than English, particularly for children with DLD. Clause-type analyses revealed group differences not fully captured by global syntactic measures, highlighting the importance of examining complex syntax in the heritage language. This study provides longitudinal evidence of distinct syntactic trajectories across the two languages in bilingual children with and without DLD.

Processing event nominalizations in developing readers: eye-tracking evidence from bilingual and dyslexic readers

Maria Vender; Ilaria Venagli; Andrea Nardon; Sabrina Piccinin; Serena Dal maso; Chiara Melloni Frontiers in Language Sciences, 2026, Vol. 5, pp. 1912839 https://doi.org/10.3389/flang.2026.1912839

چکیده

Introduction Event nominalizations are a central feature of academic language: they compress complex events into nominal structures, increasing informational density while reducing the transparency of thematic-role assignment. The present eye-tracking study examined whether nominalizations impose greater processing demands than corresponding active and passive constructions in developing readers, and whether these effects vary across readers with different linguistic and literacy profiles. Methods Seventy-nine fifth- and sixth-grade children participated in the study: 28 typically developing monolingual Italian children, 21 monolingual Italian children with developmental dyslexia, and 30 typically developing bilingual children with migrant background and Italian as the societal language. Participants silently read short passages in which the same target event was expressed either as a nominalization, a passive construction, or an active construction, and then answered comprehension questions while their eye movements were recorded. Accuracy, standard eye-movement measures, and scanpaths were analyzed to capture comprehension outcomes and online reading strategies. Results Nominalizations did not significantly reduce comprehension accuracy, but they affected online processing during both initial reading and the question-answering phase. Scanpath dissimilarity was higher for nominalizations than for both verbal constructions during initial reading, and than for passives during question-answering in correctly answered trials. In these trials, nominalizations were also associated with a higher probability of partial rescanning and a lower probability of minimal rescanning relative to active texts, indicating greater reliance on rereading when answering questions correctly. Moreover, children with dyslexia showed a generalized increase in processing effort, whereas bilingual children displayed an intermediate profile, with increased reliance on rereading during question-answering. Discussion These findings indicate that nominalizations significantly influence online reading processes even when questions are answered correctly, suggesting additional demands in retrieving information about event participants. Overall processing patterns differed across reader groups, and children with dyslexia showed the greatest effort in both online reading and question-answering.

Acoustic measures of speech sound production in multilingual children: A scoping review protocol

Shuzhen Wang; Karla Nadine Washington PLoS ONE, 2026, Vol. 21, Issue 10, pp. e0361605 https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0361605

چکیده

In most societies, using more than one language or language variety is the norm, yet the reference data against which children’s speech is judged derive largely from monolingual speakers. Systematic cross-linguistic variation is therefore liable to be read as atypical development, placing multilingual children at risk of misdiagnosis of speech sound disorder (SSD). This risk is most acute for closely related, understudied varieties, where difference and disorder overlap and community-specific data are scarce. Acoustic measures (e.g., voice onset time, vowel formants, segment durations) quantify fine-grained, continuous properties of speech production that categorical, transcription-based description obscures. No existing review, however, has mapped which acoustic measures have been applied to multilingual children, across which language varieties, or against which reference baselines their productions are interpreted. The objective of this review is to provide that map, showing where acoustic evidence is concentrated and where it is absent, to support clinical assessment and to identify where community-specific reference data are most needed. The review will follow updated Joanna Briggs Institute scoping review methodology and will be reported per the PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews. Searches will be conducted in MEDLINE (Ovid), Embase (Ovid), CINAHL (EBSCO), Web of Science Core Collection, and Linguistics and Language Behavior Abstracts, with grey literature sought through ProQuest Dissertations and Theses Global and conference proceedings; no date limits will be applied. Children from birth to 18 years are eligible regardless of clinical status, and a preschool subset (≤ 5;11) will be reported separately. After pilot calibration, two reviewers will independently screen and chart sources, resolving disagreements by discussion or a third reviewer. Charted data will be mapped through an acoustic-measure taxonomy crossed with language variety and reference baseline. This protocol has been registered on the Open Science Framework (OSF https://doi.org/10.17605/OSF.IO/R2EX5 ).

Scenario based assessment of sustainable education management under lockdowns, fuel conservation policies, and learning disruptions in Pakistan

ارزیابی مبتنی بر سناریو از مدیریت پایدار آموزش در شرایط قرنطینه، سیاست‌های صرفه‌جویی در سوخت و اختلالات یادگیری در پاکستان

Syed Afzal Shah; Faisal Khan; Anwar Khan; Noureen Fatima; Abdullah Hamoud Ali Seraj; Khalid Zaman Discover Education, 2026, Vol. 5, Issue 1 https://doi.org/10.1007/s44217-026-02335-7

چکیده

Sustainable educational management has emerged as a critical policy focus for maintaining educational continuity in times of crisis, while also optimizing resource efficiency and institutional resilience. In Pakistan, the fuel-saving strategies enacted during lockdowns have posed considerable difficulties for educational administration by interrupting instructional and learning processes. In light of this context, this research offers a scenario-based evaluation to investigate the impact of fuel conservation regulations on educational interruptions and to determine sustainable management techniques that enable continuous educational provision during emergencies. Based on relevant research, policy records, global crisis cases, and Pakistan’s educational structure, four possible outcomes include sudden disruption, persisting disparity, systemic instability, and adaptive resilience. The scenario analysis shows that digital and blended learning can help maintain continuity during brief interruptions. However, disparities in connectivity, devices, socioeconomic resources, and geographically diverse educational infrastructure may worsen inequalities. Disruptions may cause disengagement, learning deficits, dropout rates, and long-term effects on human capital, but timely institutional changes can improve educational resilience. The study shows that educational continuity depends on the duration, intensity, and government and institutional responses to interruptions. The study emphasizes the need for policymakers to prioritize affordable digital access, targeted help for at-risk learners, adaptive delivery modalities, and coherent crisis-management techniques. The study proposes a policy-focused scenario paradigm that links fuel-saving methods to sustainable educational governance and resilience in a developing country.
