The rapid emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI), is reshaping higher education through real-time tutoring, personalised learning, and advanced knowledge synthesis. In Uganda, the adoption of Competence-Based Education (CBE) emphasises learner-centered pedagogy, critical thinking, and practical skill development. While AI presents opportunities to strengthen CBE, its unstructured use may undermine independent inquiry, critical thinking, and authentic competency development. The study investigated how institutional readiness, stakeholder perceptions, and AI use patterns relate to learner achievement within a competence-based curriculum in an AI-powered environment. It further identified strategies for integrating AI to support competency attainment, academic performance, assessment outcomes, and learning outcomes while preserving the principles of CBE in Ugandan higher education institutions. A cross-sectional quantitative design was employed, involving academic staff ( n = 52) and students ( n = 513) from public and private universities in Uganda. Participants were recruited through convenience sampling using online platforms. Data were collected using structured questionnaires measuring institutional readiness, stakeholder perceptions, AI usage patterns, learner achievement, and pedagogical strategies for AI integration. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were analysed using the JASP statistical tool and Python-based data analysis tools. The findings revealed moderate institutional readiness for AI adoption, with technology recording the highest readiness (M = 3.2), followed by pedagogy (M = 2.9), while policy and governance readiness remained low (M = 2.4). Stakeholders perceived AI as supporting competency achievement (M = 4.1, 85%) and self-directed learning (M = 4.0, 80%), although concerns were raised regarding independent problem-solving (M = 3.6, 65%) and assessment authenticity (M = 3.8, 70%). Students reported frequent use of AI tools, particularly ChatGPT (81.1%), Gemini (56.8%), and Copilot (38.8%), primarily for concept clarification (89.2%), research (81.1%), and idea generation (70.3%). Correlation analysis revealed a moderate positive relationship between AI use frequency and academic performance ( r = 0.544), while chi-square analysis confirmed a significant association between AI use and academic performance (χ 2 = 241.898, p < 0.001). The study concludes that effective AI integration in CBE requires AI literacy training, lecturer capacity building, institutional policy frameworks, and competency-oriented assessment approaches to enhance learner achievement while preserving the integrity of competency development.
Personalized psychological counseling is essential for tailoring therapeutic strategies to individual needs. However, existing methods often rely on static approaches that fail to dynamically adapt responses based on emotional and contextual changes in client conversations. The primary objective is to improve personalized psychological counseling for college students experiencing academic stress, social adjustment challenges, and emotional well-being concerns. The proposed model is termed the Grizzly Bear Fat-Increase Optimization–Driven Encoder–Decoder Long Short-Term Memory (GBFI–EDLSTM) architecture to dynamically adjust counseling strategies. The model utilizes an Encoder–Decoder LSTM to process and generate personalized counseling responses. GBFI fine-tunes these responses by analyzing emotional cues, ensuring that the generated strategies are tailored to the client’s evolving needs within a college academic and social environment. The model is trained on a curated dataset consisting of mental health conversation dialogues collected from college students and university counseling sessions, which contain text-based interactions between student clients and professional counselors. Preprocessing steps such as tokenization, stop-word removal, lemmatization, and punctuation removal to standardize the input. BERT embeddings are used for feature extraction, enabling the model to capture meaningful semantic relationships. These features assist the model in generating contextually appropriate and emotionally relevant responses. The model is implemented using Python, with Tensorflow and Keras for DL, and NLTK and spaCy for text preprocessing. The model accuracy (0.936), precision (0.93), recall (0.92), and F1-score (0.92), along with a PHQ-9 reduction (4.3) and dropout rate (8.8%). It outperforms traditional models in terms of emotional engagement and therapeutic progress prediction.
Short video platforms require recommendation models that can adapt to rapidly changing user interests while optimizing engagement beyond immediate click feedback. Existing collaborative filtering and supervised deep learning methods are effective for static preference matching and short-term click-through-rate prediction, but they are less suited to sequential recommendation scenarios where each recommended item influences subsequent user behavior. To address this limitation, this paper proposes a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) framework for short video recommendation. The recommendation process is formulated as a Markov Decision Process (MDP), in which the user state is constructed from historical interactions and multimodal item features, the action corresponds to selecting candidate videos, and the reward integrates immediate feedback with delayed engagement signals. A Deep Q-Network (DQN)-based agent is trained in an offline simulation environment based on the KuaiRec short-video dataset and is compared with representative baselines, including popularity-based recommendation, matrix factorization, and supervised DNN models. The experimental results show that the DRL agent better balances click relevance, session duration, and recommendation diversity, particularly in long-term engagement-oriented metrics. Ablation results further confirm that combining immediate and delayed reward signals is important for learning a robust recommendation policy. This study provides a practical framework for developing intelligent short video recommendation systems that shift the optimization objective from short-term response maximization toward long-term user value.
Fine-grained interior design style recognition is challenging due to the subtle, context-dependent nature of stylistic cues, which are often entangled with dominant semantic objects. While convolutional neural networks effectively capture local textures, they lack global reasoning, whereas Vision Transformers model spatial relationships but do not explicitly encode perceptual style attributes. To address these limitations, we propose SAT $$^{3}$$ (Style-Aware Attention Transformer) that integrates four synergistic components: (i) a Style Attention Embedding that combines a CNN (Convolutional Neural Network) stem with a Transformer encoder enhanced by a Style Attention Module (SAM) to emphasize texture and color-related cues; (ii) an auxiliary self-supervised learning (SSL) branch leveraging masked autoencoding and contrastive learning to enrich style-invariant representations; (iii) a joint optimization strategy that balances supervised and self-supervised objectives for improved robustness; and (iv) an efficient inference pathway that retains a style-sensitive encoder while removing auxiliary components. Extensive experiments on interior design datasets demonstrate that SAT $$^{3}$$ achieves the best performance among the baselines evaluated in this study. Additional analyses indicate that the learned representations are more aligned with stylistic attributes and less dependent on semantic content, leading to improved generalization, particularly under limited annotation settings. These results highlight the effectiveness of the proposed approach for fine-grained style recognition and suggest its broader applicability to other style-driven visual understanding tasks.
Accurately managing emotions and quantifying anxiety continue to be important challenges in affective computing and digital mental health, especially where continuous, objective, and personalized evaluation goes beyond self-reported anxiety. Current deep learning systems mainly have coarse emotion classification ability and have no built-in and interpretable regulation mechanisms. In order to overcome these limitations, the Deep Learning Based Anxiety Quantification and Emotional Regulation Recommendation Generation Model (DLAQ-ERRG) is proposed in this study. It comprises three key components: (i) a Neural Stochastic Differential Attention Encoder (NSDAE) for capturing the continuous-time affective dynamics and temporal uncertainty from multimodal wearable signals; (ii) a Hyperbolic Contrastive Affective Manifold Learner (HCAML) for learning a non-Euclidean space to embed latent emotional states while preserving the hierarchical structure of affective severity and boosting inter-subject separability; and (iii) a Hyperbolic Neural Symbolic Policy Generator (ER-NSPG) for generating constraint-consistent and uncertainty-aware emotional regulation recommendations. Experimental results under strict Leave-One-Subject-Out validation on the WESAD dataset show an improvement of 11.85% compared to the best baseline (CCC = 0.734) and the Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 0.384 and the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of 0.083, respectively. The overall anxiety prediction accuracy (AIPA) for affect-state classification is 87.3% for the model. Structured severity organization is confirmed by representation quality metrics: an Anxiety Severity Separation Score (ASS) of 0.726 and a Hyperbolic Clustering Quality Index (HCQI) of 0.681. The recommendation evaluation results in an Action Appropriateness Score (AAS) of 0.776, Recommendation Smoothness Score (RSS) of 0.764 and Emotion Regulation Diversity Score (RDS) of 0.701, all representing stable and tailored generation of interventions. The results illustrate the benefits of uncertainty-aware continuous estimation of anxiety-related arousal, improved structural representation, and interpretable support in regulating arousal within a single, uncertainty-aware framework.
Long-term digital psychological intervention faces issues such as delayed state feedback, observation absence, and scattered individual responses. Static input is difficult to retain cross-period dependencies, and a unified strategy will also widen user differences and cause fluctuations in continuous actions. To address these problems, a personalized intervention system that combines Transformer temporal modeling and proximal policy optimization is constructed. Structured psychological state representation organizes continuous behaviors and subjective feedback into an updateable sequence. The Transformer encoder extracts long-term dependencies and local mutations, the individual embedding absorbs user response deviations, and the Kullback–Leibler (KL) constraint inhibits adjacent strategy jumps. The experiment uses StudentLife data and accompanying simulations, semi-synthetic data. The cumulative reward of the complete model reaches 634.7 ± 21.8, with a 95% confidence interval of 619.11–650.29. The rule strategy, Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) immediate state model, and the configuration without individual embedding are 412.6 ± 38.4, 528.3 ± 42.7, and 561.9 ± 35.2, respectively. The differences among the three groups, after Holm correction, all reach significant levels ( p < 0.001). The complete model enters the stable range after 1620 rounds, and the variance of the reward after convergence drops to 19.4. The rate of change in emotional intensity, the improvement value of state stability, and the cumulative variance of individual rewards is 0.091, 0.052, and 28.4, respectively. The ablation results show that temporal encoding mainly affects long-term benefits and convergence stability, and individual embedding focuses on reducing the dispersion among users. The existing evidence supports strategy optimization in non-clinical environments, but does not constitute a psychological mechanism explanation, causal effect proof, or clinical effectiveness conclusion.
Psychological stress dialogue recognition still lacks sufficient semantic understanding in multimodal information fusion and emotional dynamic modelling. It is difficult to achieve high-precision and robust stress state recognition in complex dialogue scenarios. Combining the advantages of the pre-trained language model BERT (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers) in semantic understanding and the capabilities of EmoShiftNet (Emotion Shift Network) in emotion transfer modelling, contextual semantic coding is realised through a multi-level Transformer, and a cross-modal Transformer is used to align heterogeneous features such as text, speech, and vision. In terms of multimodal signal representation, the BERT encoder captures fine-grained changes in language semantics, the convolutional-recurrent network extracts speech time–frequency features, the convolutional neural network and optical flow method obtain facial expression dynamics, and finally, realises unified representation through shared embedding space and cross-modal contrast learning. On the five-class psychological stress dialogue task, text semantic features contribute 42.7% of the total discriminative information, and the full multimodal fusion model achieves an overall accuracy of 85.0% (95% CI (Confidence Interval): [83.2%, 86.8%]) on the held-out test set. In the emotion transition detection task, the model achieves 76.2% transfer prediction accuracy with an average detection latency of 13.4 s. Under low signal-to-noise ratio conditions, the speech modality maintains stable performance with an error rate of 4.8% across 59 test samples. The highest accuracy rate of the fusion model under full-modal input reaches 97% on our self-constructed psychological stress dialogue dataset, which is divided strictly at the dialogue level (6391 training, 1484 validations, 2227 test samples) to avoid data leakage. This result significantly outperforms single-modal baselines and four state-of-the-art pre-trained language model baselines.
