Introduction Mental health is essential for the well-being and academic success of university students. It enables constructive participation in community life and resilience in the face of stress and adversity. Therefore, student mental health should be a priority in all societies. Aim The objective of our study is to provide an overview of the mental health status of students in the northern region of Morocco. Methods We conducted a multicenter, cross-sectional, face-to-face study among university students in northern Morocco. We used the Arabic dialect version of the MINI structured interview, which screens for 17 mental disorders, for data collection. Results The sample consisted of 1168 students from our university. After examining the gender distribution, our study included 478 men (40.9%) and 690 women (59.1%), with a male-to-female ratio of 0.69. The average age in this sample was 20.63 years (+/- 2.9). The overall prevalence of mental disorders in this sample, screened with the MINI, was 55.6%,95% CI [ 52.7–58.5]. Prevalence rates for the individual screening mental disorders were as follows: mood disorders were 38.5% [95% CI: 35.7–41.3], anxiety disorders 35.6% [95% CI: 33.8–39.4], suicide risk 11.2% ,95% CI [9.5–13.2], psychotic disorders 4.3%, 95% CI [3.2–5.6], substance addiction disorders 2.4%, 95% CI [1.6–3.4], eating disorders 2.1%, 95% CI [1.3-3.0], and antisocial personality disorders 1.7%, 95% CI [1.0-2.6]. Conclusion More than half of university students are likely to meet the criteria for a DSM-IV disorder at some point in their lives. These concerning results should prompt and mobilize non-governmental organizations and governments to invest significantly this field.

Gamified learning improves antimicrobial resistance knowledge and engagement among university students

Sangeeta Sharma; Mahak Sharma; Aashima Dabas Discover Public Health, 2026, Vol. 23, Issue 1 https://doi.org/10.1186/s12982-026-03040-4

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is accelerated by inappropriate antibiotic use, self-medication, over-the-counter access, poor adherence, and inadequate infection prevention and control (IPC). Innovative education is needed to promote community antimicrobial stewardship (AMS; rational antimicrobial use), IPC (infection-spread prevention), and One Health awareness (linking human, animal, and environmental health) among young adults who can influence family and community practices. To evaluate the feasibility, participation, knowledge patterns, and immediate educational value of a low-cost, gamified AMR awareness initiative for university students from diverse disciplines. A single-group, non-comparative educational evaluation was conducted during a 4-hour campus event in January 2026. More than 600 undergraduate and postgraduate students from diverse disciplines participated voluntarily in a live digital comedy quiz, structured debate, and AMR-themed traditional games. Materials were based on community antimicrobial stewardship, IPC, One Health, regulatory, and locally relevant behavioural themes, reviewed by experts and pilot tested. Aggregate participation, item-level quiz accuracy, platform metrics, and qualitative feedback were analysed descriptively. Participation was high, with all students attending the digital polling quiz; game-station participation varied as some students played while others observed or moved across stations. Quiz accuracy was high for microbiology and IPC concepts (85–100%), moderate for One Health and antimicrobial-use principles (65–80%), and lower for regulatory and access-related topics (< 40–60%). Response time was interpreted only as a descriptive platform metric. Feedback indicated that humor, competition, and familiar game formats helped students understand AMR concepts and supported intent to avoid self-medication and follow IPC practices. This low-cost gamified initiative was feasible, acceptable, and relevant for large-scale AMR awareness among university students. The single-group design limits causal interpretation, but the model enabled broad reach, immediate feedback, and misconception correction. Future studies should include validated pre/post measures, delayed follow-up, subgroup analysis, and behavioural indicators to assess learning, retention, and behaviour change.

This cultural case study examines a community-based, trans-led psychosocial support service provided by the Greek Transgender Support Association (GTSA) between 2010 and 2025. Operating within a context of limited public provision of gender-affirming mental health services, the GTSA Psychotherapy and Gender-Affirming Care Team supported 380 transgender and gender-diverse individuals through more than 3,567 h of individual psychotherapy and at least 620 h of group-based interventions. Most service users sought support in relation to social, legal, and medical aspects of gender transition, while approximately one-third presented with suicidal ideation during intake or follow-up. Only one adult case of detransition was documented, followed by later retransition, and no completed suicides were recorded among individuals engaged in continuous follow-up. Key features of the service included continuity of care, explicitly depathologizing clinical practices, cultural humility, and the integration of psychosocial support with practical and advocacy-oriented interventions. Drawing on aggregated service records and situating the analysis within Greece’s socio-cultural and institutional landscape, this case study documents sustained demand for accessible, affirming, low-threshold psychosocial care in a context of institutional absence and structural stigma.

Prevalence and associated factors of depressive, anxiety, and stress symptom severity among high school students in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam

Khoa Dang Nguyen; Tho Nguyen; Ngô Anh Vinh; Thi Minh Le Discover Public Health, 2026, Vol. 23, Issue 1 https://doi.org/10.1186/s12982-026-03185-2

Depressive, anxiety, and stress symptoms are common among adolescents, yet many studies dichotomise Depression Anxiety Stress Scales-21 (DASS-21) outcomes, potentially losing information across severity levels. This study estimated symptom prevalence and examined factors associated with the severity of depressive, anxiety, and stress symptoms among Vietnamese high school students. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among all Grade 10–12 students at one school in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam. Bivariate and multivariable proportional-odds logistic regression models were fitted for three ordered severity categories: normal, mild/moderate, and severe/very severe. Analyses were performed in R version 4.6.0. Among 366 students, severe/very severe depressive, anxiety, and stress symptoms were reported by 13.4%, 27.9%, and 16.4% of students, respectively. Female sex was associated with greater severity of depressive (aOR = 2.18, 95% CI: 1.41–3.39), anxiety (aOR = 1.88, 95% CI: 1.24–2.86), and stress symptoms (aOR = 2.37, 95% CI: 1.54–3.68). Average/weak academic performance was associated with greater depressive symptom severity (aOR = 2.10, 95% CI: 1.11–4.04). Poor family relationships were associated with greater anxiety (aOR = 1.79, 95% CI: 1.11–2.90) and stress symptom severity (aOR = 2.10, 95% CI: 1.25–3.53), while parental academic expectations were associated with greater anxiety symptom severity (aOR = 1.66, 95% CI: 1.10–2.52). Grade 11 students had lower odds of greater stress symptom severity than Grade 10 students (aOR = 0.50, 95% CI: 0.31–0.80). Female sex, academic performance, family relationships, parental expectations, and grade level were differentially associated with symptom severity. Analyses that preserved the ordered structure of DASS-21 outcomes showed that associated factors differed across symptom domains. These findings support sex-sensitive screening and targeted school- and family-based mental health strategies.
