Morphology beyond the morpheme: distributed processing effects in the acoustic realization of German word-final clusters

Chiara Celata; Martina Rossi Frontiers in Human Neuroscience, 2026, Vol. 20 https://doi.org/10.3389/fnhum.2026.1924343

This study investigates how morphological structure shapes phonetic realization in German word-final /Cst/ clusters, with a focus on form-meaning mapping strategies in elicited speech. Phonologically identical clusters are compared across simplex words and inflected verb forms, where /st/ encodes a grammatical morpheme. We analyse duration, intensity, and spectral center of gravity (COG) for clusters, individual segments, and adjacent vowels, modeling their variation with linear mixed-effects models. Rather than yielding uniform phonetic shifts, morphology-related effects emerge as context-sensitive patterns modulated by lexical and phonetic factors. Temporal effects primarily take the form of durational reduction in of morphemic segments, but they extend to surrounding phonetic material, where they manifest as lengthening. In addition, increased intensity and spectral sharpening are associated with morphemic shortening, calling for a more comprehensive interpretation of phonetic reduction and its relationship with morphological function. Overall, the results are in line with approaches to speech production that move beyond a strictly modular view and posit dynamic interactions between morphological and phonetic information within the cognitive system.

Background Predictive-processing accounts of BPD, including the hierarchical-prior-imbalance account proposed by Herzog, offer a framework for interpreting affective instability and impulsivity. The present task-fMRI study evaluates whether discriminative task-evoked patterns are consistent with this framework; because it does not directly estimate prediction errors, precision weighting, or hierarchical belief updating, it is not a mechanistic test of predictive processing. Methods To evaluate this question, this study developed a leakage-controlled multimodal machine learning framework for individualized classification of adolescents with BPD and healthy controls based on emotional Go/No-Go task-fMRI activity. Three feature domains were constructed: functional connectivity (FC), task-evoked general linear model (GLM)-derived temporal features, and clinical variables. Seven feature settings, including single-modality, dual-modality, and full multimodal combinations, were evaluated using multiple conventional machine learning classifiers, including logistic regression, support vector machine, k-nearest neighbors, Gaussian naive Bayes, multilayer perceptron, random forest, and XGBoost or gradient boosting. Results The results showed that task-evoked GLM-derived features provided the strongest single-modality discriminative information (AUC of 0.881 ± 0.055). SHAP analysis confirmed the predominance of GLM-derived features, accounting for 83.1% of total model attribution, compared to 9.5 and 7.5% for functional connectivity and clinical variables, respectively. At the neural level, discriminative features were distributed across visual/perceptual regions (calcarine, cuneus, occipital cortex), temporoparietal/default-mode hubs (angular and supramarginal gyri), frontal control regions (inferior frontal gyrus), and subcortical structures (putamen). This distributed pattern aligns with a hierarchical organization spanning perceptual input, contextual/self-referential processing, and top-down inhibitory control systems, consistent with the proposed model of hierarchical affective predictive imbalance. Conclusion Task-evoked GLM-derived features were the primary source of discriminative information for adolescent BPD, with functional connectivity and clinical variables providing modest additional value. The resulting classification pattern is consistent with hierarchical predictive-processing accounts but does not establish a specific predictive-processing mechanism. The same regional pattern may also reflect visual attention, salience processing, and executive inhibitory control.

Resolving the apparent paradox of multisensory expertise: coupling priors, common-cause priors, and how to distinguish among them

Perceptual expertise is widely assumed to refine multisensory perception, yet the empirical literature appears inconsistent. Trained musicians show narrower audiovisual temporal integration windows and quicker segregation, whereas experienced wine tasters seem more influenced by a wine's color in their aroma and flavor judgments than novices are. We argue that the inconsistency arises from a conflation of two formally distinct quantities: the prior probability that concurrent signals arise from a common source, and the coupling between the values of signals that share one. We present a generative model in which both are free parameters, along with channel precision and a decision criterion, that contains causal-inference and coupling-prior models as special cases. The model shows that the correlation between the values of two signals across an environment reflects only the product of the two priors, so that a correlation-tracking learner acquires the coupling when the signals always share a source, whereas separating the two priors requires representing causal structure; that binary common-source reports confound the common-cause prior with the decision criterion; that the coupling trades off against the measurement noise of the influencing channel unless its precision is measured independently; and that the two priors leave distinct signatures in how cross-modal influence varies with disparity. When the source is fixed, as for the color and odor of a wine, tighter coupling alone produces the conjunction of greater displacement by color and better discrimination between wines reported for experienced tasters, which no change in odor precision can produce. Simulations of a test battery combining continuous estimates, common-source reports and discrimination thresholds show that the parameters can be recovered, that a within-subject dissociation can be detected with conventional sample sizes under illustrative effect sizes, and that recovery fails in certain cases. The account yields a rule classifying environments by their base rate of common causation and their coupling strength, and the same ambiguity attends claims about altered multisensory processing in autism and aging. We also show that the most cited demonstration of expert susceptibility to color contains no expertise manipulation, and suggest that apparent expert biases may reflectwind calibration to real-world statistics.

Simulation-based neural dynamics of stress-related negative cognitive bias in depressive symptoms: a dynamical EEG/ERP framework

Yimin Zhang; Jianping Liu Frontiers in Human Neuroscience, 2026, Vol. 20, pp. 1972914 https://doi.org/10.3389/fnhum.2026.1972914

Introduction This simulation-based computational study develops a non-linear state-space framework for stress-related negative cognitive bias and multivariate EEG/ERP observations. Methods A three-state model represents negative bias, cognitive control, and arousal, while symptom load and normalized model stress input reshape a quartic bias potential. N2, P3, late positive potential, frontal theta, frontal alpha asymmetry (FAA), and frontoparietal phase locking provide complementary observation channels. Additional checks distinguish the non-linear benchmark from additive and interaction-only competing generators, examine equilibria of the full coupled system, and perturb the observation model. Results We establish bounded stochastic dynamics, a conditional scalar multistability boundary, stable-branch stress sensitivity, and a sufficient local state-observability condition. A seeded benchmark with 180 simulated participants yields model-implied stress-by-symptom slopes of 66.83 ms for response time, 1.12 μV for LPP, 0.775 dB for frontal theta, 0.133 for FAA, and 0.0769 for frontoparietal PLV. Under a non-linear generating process, mean held-out RMSE was 0.060 for the pre-specified quartic candidate vs. 0.436 for the interaction-only candidate. State-reconstruction RMSE increased from 0.152 under the nominal loading matrix to 0.232 under 15% loading perturbations. Discussion These results demonstrate implementation consistency and characterize model sensitivity; they are not clinical effect estimates or evidence of empirical parameter identifiability.
