Vicente Luis-del Campo; Jesús Muñoz-Jiménez; Héctor Valentín Jiménez-Naranjo; K León-Guzmán Frontiers in Sports and Active Living, 2026, Vol. 8 https://doi.org/10.3389/fspor.2026.1806745

Introduction The GIMNASTRADA is an annual, non-competitive gymnastics event, held in the city of Cáceres (Extremadura, Spain) since 1996. The 2019 edition was the largest in number of participants with around 3,700 gymnasts and 12,000 spectators. The aim of this study was to determine whether the perception of quality of GIMNASTRADA 2019 was influenced by the type of participation that different groups of attenders developed in this gymnastic event (gymnasts, gymnastics group leaders, family members, audience, organisational staff). Methods To this end, a total of 331 participants completed a short four item-questionnaire created ad hoc for this study in order to evaluate the perceived quality of certain management processes existing in this sporting event (e.g., quality of facilities, planning, organisation and development). The questionnaire, based on single-item measures of previous validated scales as EVENTQUAL and IPA4RE, was answered anonymously by the participants using their own mobile devices via a Google Docs form. Results The results showed differences in questionnaire scores between groups of participants. It is concluded that the type of participation influenced the perception of quality between groups of attenders in GIMNASTRADA 2019. Discussion It would be advisable for sports managers to design sporting events tailored to different participant profiles, including activities adapted to their specific interests, with the aim of providing a positive experience that would promote their participation in future editions.

Background Regular physical activity is associated with improvements in cognitive function during childhood. Integrating physically active learning strategies, such as active gamification, into school settings may enhance cognitive processes while increasing student engagement. However, evidence from randomized controlled trials in primary education remains limited. Aim This study aimed to examine the effects of a physically active gamification program on concentration, selective attention, memory, and creativity in primary school children. Methods A cluster-randomized controlled trial was conducted with 120 children aged 8–11 years from six intact classes. Classes were randomly assigned to an experimental group, which completed a 12-week physically active gamification program during physical education lessons, or to a control group, which followed the standard curriculum. Concentration and selective attention were assessed using the D2 Test, creativity with the CREA Test, and immediate visual memory using a task adapted from the Reynolds Intellectual Assessment Scales (RIAS). Intervention effects were analyzed using linear mixed-effects models, with group, time, and the group × time interaction as fixed effects and classroom included as a random effect to account for clustering. Effect sizes were calculated using Cohen's d . Results Significant group × time interactions were observed for concentration, selective attention, immediate visual memory, and creativity, indicating greater improvements in the experimental group than in the control group. Estimated marginal means showed that concentration increased from 58.43 to 63.68 in the experimental group, while remaining relatively stable in the control group (60.08 to 60.25). Similar intervention-related improvements were observed for selective attention and immediate visual memory, with the latter increasing from 9.37 to 11.62 in the experimental group compared with 9.47 to 10.20 in the control group. Creativity increased markedly in the experimental group (44.22 to 53.00), whereas it remained relatively stable in the control group (45.47 to 44.69). All group × time interactions were statistically significant ( p < .05). Conclusions A 12-week physically active gamification intervention improved several cognitive functions in primary school children, including attention, memory, and creativity. These findings support the integration of physically active gamification approaches into school-based physical education to promote cognitive development.

The equine sector provides employment opportunities and leisure activities for a substantial number of people in Sweden. Although these activities are closely connected to nature and dependent on ecosystem services, the sector faces significant ecological challenges. This article explores how representatives of the equine sector—particularly riding schools—conceptualize and articulate their work with environmental sustainability in policy documents and “talk about” everyday practice. The analysis is informed by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and grounded in an ecolinguistic framework. Our results show that national level policy documents are closely aligned with the established sustainability terminology, whereas local documents and interviewees rarely employ SDG related terminology. Despite this discursive distance, riding schools demonstrate strong engagement and considerable creativity in addressing local environmental challenges. However, this ambition is constrained by limited knowledge, resources, and authority to address more complex ecological issues. Within the pedagogical environments that riding schools constitute, systematic instruction on environmental sustainability holds a marginal position. We identified five “stories we live by”: “the responsible local care taker”, “we try, but we lack resources”, “learning through everyday practice”, “sustainability without sustainability terminology” and “small action matters”. We have interpreted this as emerging eco-benifical narratives that can carry pedagogical potential. We argue that with strengthened organizational support, clearer conceptual tools, and structured opportunities for capacity building, riding schools could play a more active role in shaping sustainability-oriented “stories to live by” and contribute more fully to the broader societal transition toward sustainable development.

Continuous cursor tracking as a process-oriented measure of anticipation in soccer: expertise differences in spatial and temporal preparation

Osamu Nakamura; Ryoji Onagawa; Kazutoshi Kudo; Norikazu Hirose Frontiers in Sports and Active Living, 2026, Vol. 8, pp. 1991767 https://doi.org/10.3389/fspor.2026.1991767

Introduction Anticipating an opponent's actions is central to performance in team sports such as soccer, where a player must select the correct response within a fraction of a second. Perceptual-cognitive expertise in anticipation is well documented, but standard measures (response time, accuracy, or option choice) capture only the discrete response produced at a single moment and leave the preparatory processing that precedes it unobserved. Building on evidence that hand and cursor movements reveal cognition as it unfolds, the present study examined, as a proof of concept, whether continuous cursor tracking can read out the pre-response preparatory state in a sports anticipation task. Methods Twelve skilled soccer players and twelve novices watched soccer pass-course clips and anticipated which teammate would receive the ball by moving a cursor; the video was stopped at the final frame (the moment a response was required), and the same clips were repeated across three blocks. Two continuous measures were defined: the cursor's Euclidean distance to the correct receiver at response onset (a spatial index of where the participant was poised) and the increase in cursor velocity in the window immediately before response onset (a temporal index of the movement toward the response). Results Compared with novices, skilled players anticipated more accurately, were poised closer to the correct receiver, and showed a larger velocity increase; control analyses argued against the velocity difference being a by-product of the total amount of movement. In an exploratory analysis, the positional difference emerged across repeated presentations of the same clips and was largest in the final block. In addition, the velocity difference was already present in the first presentation, and no significant change across repeated presentations was detected. Discussion The pre-response preparatory state is observed in both a spatial aspect (where one is poised) and a temporal aspect (how one moves toward the response). Because in basic reaching research the position and the velocity of movement index different aspects of decision-making, capturing both under a single continuous measure (which discrete responses cannot) provides a basis for measuring the decision-making processes that underlie anticipation in sport.
