INTRODUCTION: Extensive evidence demonstrates that early life adversity (ELA) has enduring contributions to psychological and physical problems, yet little research has examined how ELA may potentially influence positive adaptation. In this longitudinal, multi-method study, we explored prospective relations from childhood ELA subtypes (i.e., relational, environmental, biological) to adolescents' observed prosocial behavior (i.e., resource allocation to benefit others) via parent reports of childhood cognitive and affective empathy. METHODS: Participants were 250 youth (50% assigned female at birth; 46% Latine, 18% Black, 11.2% White, 0.4% Asian, and 24.4% multiracial) and parents who completed laboratory assessments at ages 4, 8, or 17. ELA across the first 4 years of life and childhood empathy (age 8) were assessed via parent reports, whereas prosocial behavior was measured using teacher reports (age 8) and a computer-based behavioral assessment (age 17). RESULTS: Controlling for youth's assigned sex, ethnicity-race, and prior prosocial behavior, path analyses revealed distinct pathways across ELA subtypes. A significant path from relational ELA to decreased prosocial behavior was mediated by lower affective empathy, aligning with deficit-based frameworks of adversity. However, consistent with strength-based perspectives, a significant path from biological ELA to increased prosocial behavior was mediated by higher affective empathy. Neither environmental ELA nor cognitive empathy was associated with prosocial behavior. CONCLUSIONS: Future research should explore socialization factors and interventions that enhance affective empathy among adolescents with biological and relational ELA, while considering multiple forms of prosocial behavior (e.g., helping vs. comforting) and additional mechanisms that may underlie these observed pathways (e.g., sensitive parenting, motivation).
To be effective, adolescents' parents must have basic knowledge about what their children do, who they spend their time with, and what they care about. There is broad consensus that parental monitoring facilitates adolescent information sharing and that information sharing is the most important factor predicting parents' knowledge of their adolescents' lives (Liu et al. 2020). Nonetheless, under some circumstances, vicious cycles can develop in which adolescents react to parents' attempts to gain information by becoming more secretive and parents, in turn, respond to adolescents' secrecy by becoming more intrusive (Hawk et al. 2013, 2016). Despite developmentalists' fundamental interest in the study of change, most current conceptual models of monitoring are static. Specifically, theories have little to say about what would initiate change in stable family systems. This paper integrates what we have learned about parental monitoring, adolescent information sharing, and parents' knowledge in the last decades (e.g., Gingo 2024; Liu et al. 2020) with older models of parenting practice, style, and adolescents' willingness to be socialized (Cumsille et al. 2010; Darling and Steinberg 1993). It then incorporates insights from a model of monitoring borrowed from criminology (Hardie 2021a, 2022, 2024). This integrated model focuses attention on parents' goals and their ability to assess the success of their efforts as a mechanism driving change. A series of deterministic dynamic systems models illustrates predictions from this model about how parental monitoring and knowledge, adolescent information sharing, and outcomes unfold over time under different circumstances.
INTRODUCTION: Lifestyle factors are increasingly recognized as important correlates of adolescent mental health and wellbeing. However, existing research has largely focused on sleep, nutrition, and physical activity in isolation, with less attention to cumulative multidomain lifestyle protective factors and their prospective associations with subsequent wellbeing beyond prior mental health. METHODS: Data were drawn from 163 adolescents (55.2% female; aged 12-17 years) participating in the Australian Longitudinal Adolescent Brain Study between 2018 and 2025. Lagged generalized estimating equation models examined associations between cumulative lifestyle protective factors and wellbeing at the subsequent assessment after adjustment for prior wellbeing, age, and sex. Two lifestyle protective factor indices were examined: a Base Index comprising nutrition, sleep, and physical activity, and an Extended Index additionally incorporating mindfulness and social connectedness. Outcomes were positive wellbeing measured using the COMPAS-W and low psychological distress measured using the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K10). RESULTS: Lifestyle protective factors commonly co-occurred across behavioral and psychosocial domains. Higher scores on both the Base and Extended lifestyle protective factor indices were associated with greater odds of subsequent positive wellbeing and low psychological distress after adjustment for prior wellbeing, age, and sex. CONCLUSIONS: Cumulative lifestyle protective factors were prospectively associated with subsequent adolescent wellbeing after accounting for prior levels of wellbeing, highlighting multidomain lifestyle protection as a potentially important contributor to mental health across adolescence.
INTRODUCTION: Trust becomes an increasingly important relationship provision in adolescent friendships. However, little is known about how relationship processes commonly regarded as positive or negative, such as self-disclosure and conflict, foster trust or give rise to distrust among friends, especially from adolescents' own perspectives. This study explores how adolescents experience their friends' responses within these processes as contributing to trust and distrust. METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of data from six focus groups (N = 28; 50% female) with early (aged 11-12), middle (aged 14-15), and late (aged 18-19) Czech adolescents. Participants were asked to think of someone they trusted and someone they distrusted and explain why. The present analysis focused on their accounts concerning friends. The data were analyzed from a critical realist position using an inductive, semantic, and experiential approach to reflexive thematic analysis. RESULTS: We identified four themes: (1) "Figuring it out": Dealing with disagreements, (2) "In it together": Responding to each other's needs, (3) "Things I wouldn't tell anyone else": Handling disclosures, and (4) "No matter what": Demonstrating reliability. CONCLUSIONS: This study sheds light on adolescents' experiences of trust and distrust in friendship. Our findings show that even friends' responses within relationship processes considered negative, such as conflict, and responses that contribute to distrust, may help adolescents learn to self-disclose appropriately and resolve disagreements. Implications for parents, teachers, and counselors in helping adolescents form trusting friendships, draw on them as unique sources of support, and cope with experiences of distrust are discussed.
