Understanding Instructor Self-Reflection in College Developmental Literacy Contexts: Time and Adaptability
This study aimed to understand how self-reflection is perceived by college instructors of integrated reading and writing (IRW) courses in a range of 2- and 4-year institutions in Texas. Using Flavell’s (1979) model of metacognitive monitoring as a theoretical framework, this research explores the layered complexities of self-reflective teaching practices through a combination survey and focus-group approach. Findings indicate that self-reflection is a dynamic and evolving practice in which participants’ understandings of self-reflection include its time-intensive nature and the need for adaptability. The study highlights the role of self-reflection in bridging teaching intent and outcomes and has implications for educator training, including the need for structured support for instructors as they work to develop reflective practices.
