Work-integrated learning (WIL) is increasingly conceptualised as a curriculum-embedded process that may include non-placement activities designed to make professional practice visible early in a degree. This study evaluates a first-year, community-engaged WIL model embedded within a sport development degree. The curriculum integrated practitioner interaction, site visits, applied learning tasks, and structured reflection to support students’ early engagement with professional and community contexts. Using a convergent mixed-methods design (n = 89), the study examined whether participation in this curriculum was associated with students’ vocational identity and sense of belonging during transition to university. Health-related degrees, in which professional exposure is typically deferred, were used as a contextual comparison. Students who experienced the first-year WIL curriculum reported stronger vocational identity, particularly in relation to professional belonging and identification with a future profession. Qualitative findings indicated that practitioner interaction, authentic tasks, and guided reflection helped students visualise professional roles and develop clearer understandings of career pathways, whereas students without structured early exposure described a more exploratory first-year experience centred on disciplinary learning and peer connection. The study contributes to WIL scholarship by positioning first-year, non-placement, community-engaged WIL as an identity-forming process rather than solely a late-stage employability intervention. It proposes a scalable curriculum model for supporting transition, belonging, and career development through practice-visible learning.
This study explored undergraduate students’ and community partners’ perceptions of the value of micro-credentials within community-engaged Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) in technical education programs in South-East Nigeria. Guided by Experiential Learning Theory, Human Capital Theory, and Signaling Theory, the study adopted a mixed-methods exploratory design to examine how micro-credentials were perceived in relation to employability-related competencies, professional confidence, and career readiness. Quantitative data were collected through a structured questionnaire administered to 412 undergraduate students enrolled in technical education programs incorporating community-engaged WIL, while qualitative data were generated through semi-structured interviews with 20 students and 12 community partners involved in WIL supervision and collaboration. Findings revealed generally positive student perceptions regarding the usefulness of micro-credentials for recognising competencies developed through experiential learning, strengthening confidence in communicating skills, and supporting preparedness for future employment. Qualitative findings further suggested that students viewed micro-credentials as useful for documenting technical and transferable competencies, encouraging reflective learning, and articulating skills gained through community-engaged experiences. Community partners similarly perceived micro-credentials as potentially valuable indicators of students’ preparedness and engagement within collaborative projects. However, participants identified institutional and contextual constraints, including limited awareness, inconsistent implementation, inadequate guidance, and weak digital infrastructure. The study suggests that micro-credentials may serve as useful mechanisms for recognising and communicating learning developed through community-engaged WIL while highlighting the need for stronger institutional support and clearer implementation strategies.
Anglicare Southern Queensland (Anglicare) is a not-for-profit organisation that delivers community and human services. With a long history of hosting applied student placements in aged care, social work and community services, mental health and wellbeing, youth support, and nursing and allied health, Anglicare has in recent times begun to expand our hosting of work-integrated learning (WIL) relating to research and evaluation, advocacy, and community outreach. Proceeding from the principle that different types of WIL are advantageous to social science and humanities students at all levels, we currently host a variety of industry research projects, student placements, and internships. These arrangements encompass everything from formal assessment to projects that are co-designed between student/s and supervisor/s. The benefits of hosting WIL include supporting the future careers of emerging professionals while simultaneously expanding our capacity in research, evaluation, and advocacy. As working with students who are new to a corporate workplace can also be time intensive, WIL programs need adequate university staffing to support students’ engagement with industry hosts and moderated timelines for assessment and reporting requirements. In this practitioner reflection, we discuss how Anglicare’s Centre for Research and Social Change establishes and manages community engaged WIL partnerships, welcoming undergraduate and postgraduate students in all areas of the social sciences and humanities.
As universities respond to global challenges through local partnerships, Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) has become a key strategy for preparing students for complex career landscapes. This comparative study examines community-engaged WIL in criminology and justice sector programmes within Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom (UK). Drawing on key policy frameworks from these three countries, we explore various contexts that shape WIL design, delivery, and sustainability. We begin with a policy landscape analysis of funding mechanisms and regulatory frameworks that enable or constrain WIL. Three case studies illustrate how programmes navigate these contexts: (1) an Australian example showcasing low-cost simulation models such as community surveys; (2) a Canadian case highlighting structured partnerships with criminal justice-related organisations; and (3) a case study from the UK examining WIL integration within policing apprenticeships. Our analysis highlights shared strategies including partnerships in community, common challenges such as risk management, partnership sustainability, and tensions between disciplinary fields. Findings offer a practical framework for implementing community-engaged WIL. We argue that innovation often emerges from the margins through creative pedagogy, cross-sector collaboration, and commitment to student and community voice, alongside policy recommendations to strengthen employability, identity development and sustainable community partnerships.
Universities want placements filled, students want them completed, and community partners are left to reconcile a mismatch no one asked them to navigate. This practice-informed provocation draws on work-integrated learning (WIL) scholarship and my experience as placement coordinator to argue that community engagement is often raised as a value in psychology placements but insufficiently embedded in placement infrastructure. Community engagement may appear in program rationales and accreditation documents but rarely in the structural design of how placements are resourced and supported. In other words, there is a gap between what we say about community engagement and what we build into our placement systems (Jackson et al., 2017). Based on my experience, I argue that community partners are often positioned as hosts rather than co-designers of professional learning, left carrying substantial, under-recognised responsibility for student learning. Postgraduate psychology placements cannot be ethically scaled through transactional placement models. If universities want community partners to sustain student learning, they must resource relational co-design as core placement infrastructure, rather than treat it as optional engagement work.
This paper presents a multi-case study of how community-based Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) can meaningfully embed Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) education into undergraduate curricula. Drawing on four marketing and public relations subjects, we examine how the deliberate alignment of authentic industry and community challenges with specific SDGs creates learning contexts that develop professional competencies alongside sustainability mindsets. Across the four cases, community partners are positioned as co-educators within a three-way partnership model involving students, educators, and industry, enabling a form of knowledge co-creation that neither classroom instruction nor community engagement alone can replicate. Examining the design, delivery and outcomes of each case, we identify three features that account for their effectiveness: the explicit mapping of partner challenges to relevant SDGs, the positioning of partners as co-educators rather than clients, and the achievability of meaningful SDG integration within existing curriculum structures. We argue that these features constitute transferable design principles for educators across disciplines seeking to enhance both graduate employability and societal impact, and we consider the pedagogical and institutional conditions under which they can be sustained and scaled.
Community-engaged Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) is increasingly positioned as a mechanism for advancing graduate employability and social responsibility, yet the frameworks used to evaluate it remain anchored to countable proxies: employment rates, satisfaction scores, and placement completions. This provocation argues that these metrics are structurally misaligned with what WIL practitioners actually know about placement quality: knowledge that is relational, contextually rich, and routinely invisible in institutional reporting. As Generative AI enters WIL evaluation, this misalignment becomes urgent. Automating existing frameworks will not resolve their limitations, and risks further marginalising the evidence that most reliably signals whether community-engaged WIL is working. Drawing on research into practitioner agency in learning analytics, this provocation calls for evaluation frameworks that legitimise practitioner judgement, centre community partner perspectives, and deploy GenAI in service of relational knowledge rather than as a substitute for it. Effective WIL evaluation is not primarily a measurement problem, it is a question of whose evidence counts.
