The Ig Nobel Prize, a spoof on Nobel Prize, has long performed a valuable service to science. It honours achievements that make people laugh and then think [1].Global Health, after several decades of earnest endeavour, would seem ready for similar recognition.I therefore propose, with all due humility, the establishment of an Ig Nobel Prize for Global Health. There is, of course, no intention to mock Global Health, which is too noble, and the inequalities it seeks to address too consequential. But, like most human enterprises, Global Health has acquired its own vocabulary, rituals, paradoxes and unintended ironies. The proposed Ig Nobel Prize for Global Health would therefore recognise such phenomena for their ability to make us laugh first, think second, and perhaps recognise a little of ourselves in the process.Five examples readily come to mind.
The purpose of this action research study was to explore how humorous science books can be purposefully integrated into elementary science instruction to enhance student engagement and conceptual understanding. Participants included nineteen second-grade students, ages seven to eight. The study examined the impact of teacher-led, intentional humor embedded in science texts featuring jokes, playful language, and a narrative voice. Data were collected through pre- and post-surveys assessing students’ understanding of grade-level science concepts, as well as their interest in and enjoyment of science learning. Results indicated that students responded positively to humorous science texts and demonstrated gains in content knowledge. These results suggest that humor can serve as an effective instructional strategy and that engaging, humorous science books can be a meaningful tool in elementary science education.
Composing an anecdote text requires students to think critically about social phenomena, arrange a structured narrative (abstract, orientation, crisis, reaction, and coda), and deliver criticism humorously. Initial observation in class X-9 of SMA Negeri 21 Surabaya showed difficulties in generating ideas, outlining, and presenting humor, while instruction did not accommodate diverse learning styles. This classroom action research aimed to describe the implementation of the CINTA method (Idea Brainstorming, Narration, and Analytical Laughter) and to describe students’ anecdote-writing results in two cycles. Using the Kemmis and McTaggart model with 36 students, data were obtained from students’ works collected as digital files: an anecdote text scored with a five-aspect rubric in Cycle I and the final infographic or comic product scored with a five-aspect product rubric in Cycle II, analyzed descriptively. In Cycle I, 36 of 36 works could be assessed, with a mean score of 76.86 and 71.4% of works reaching the minimum mastery criterion of 75. The humor-and-criticism and language aspects were the lowest. The provisional Cycle II product mean was 88.06, with all 36 products. The two cycles used different instruments, so the results are reported separately and cannot be compared directly.
This essay examines how Roberto Benigni’s Life Is Beautiful (1997/1998) uses comedy to represent Holocaust trauma. Taking the proposition that comedy emerges from tragedy through time as its point of departure, it considers the ethics of humor in representing collective catastrophe. Through the film’s Chaplinesque performance, fairy-tale structure, restrained depiction of violence, and Guido’s imaginative protection of his son, the discussion situates Benigni within Italian cinema’s treatment of Fascism and historical memory. The essay revisits debates about historical authenticity and Holocaust representation, arguing that humor can invite ethical reflection as well as controversy. It considers the limits of cinematic representation and humor’s uneasy relationship to historical suffering, survival, and collective memory.
Abstract This article examines the 2025 controversy over Gallaudet University’s invention of a new American Sign Language (ASL) sign for Coca-Cola as a case study of resistance to the commodification of sign language in late capitalism. Drawing on discourse analysis of deaf social media reactions and satirical videos, this study explores how institutional authority and corporate branding collide with perceived deaf community norms of linguistic innovation. Situating the case within debates on language commodification (Heller 2010), symbolic capital (Bourdieu 1977), and sign language ideologies (Kusters, Green, Moriarty, & Snoddon 2020), this article argues that ASL is both a cultural emblem and an economic resource, and as such, a flashpoint for conflict. The backlash to the ‘new Coke sign’ reveals deaf resistance to top-down language planning and the creative reassertion of ownership through humor, critique, and digital activism. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is accelerated by inappropriate antibiotic use, self-medication, over-the-counter access, poor adherence, and inadequate infection prevention and control (IPC). Innovative education is needed to promote community antimicrobial stewardship (AMS; rational antimicrobial use), IPC (infection-spread prevention), and One Health awareness (linking human, animal, and environmental health) among young adults who can influence family and community practices. To evaluate the feasibility, participation, knowledge patterns, and immediate educational value of a low-cost, gamified AMR awareness initiative for university students from diverse disciplines. A single-group, non-comparative educational evaluation was conducted during a 4-hour campus event in January 2026. More than 600 undergraduate and postgraduate students from diverse disciplines participated voluntarily in a live digital comedy quiz, structured debate, and AMR-themed traditional games. Materials were based on community antimicrobial stewardship, IPC, One Health, regulatory, and locally relevant behavioural themes, reviewed by experts and pilot tested. Aggregate participation, item-level quiz accuracy, platform metrics, and qualitative feedback were analysed descriptively. Participation was high, with all students attending the digital polling quiz; game-station participation varied as some students played while others observed or moved across stations. Quiz accuracy was high for microbiology and IPC concepts (85–100%), moderate for One Health and antimicrobial-use principles (65–80%), and lower for regulatory and access-related topics (< 40–60%). Response time was interpreted only as a descriptive platform metric. Feedback indicated that humor, competition, and familiar game formats helped students understand AMR concepts and supported intent to avoid self-medication and follow IPC practices. This low-cost gamified initiative was feasible, acceptable, and relevant for large-scale AMR awareness among university students. The single-group design limits causal interpretation, but the model enabled broad reach, immediate feedback, and misconception correction. Future studies should include validated pre/post measures, delayed follow-up, subgroup analysis, and behavioural indicators to assess learning, retention, and behaviour change.
The period of university studies is associated with numerous stressors that can negatively affect the psychological functioning of young adults. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between perceived stress levels, preferred coping strategies, and psychological resilience. The analysis focused on resilience as a potential moderator of the relationship between coping strategies and stress intensity. The study included 607 Polish students. A significant part of the group was medical students (61.72%). The study employed the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10), the Coping Inventory (Mini-COPE), the Resilience Scale (SPP-25), and used an author-developed questionnaire to collect sociodemographic information. The respondents exhibited moderate stress intensity (M = 22.54; SD = 7.04) and a moderately high level of general resilience (M = 59.39; SD = 15.37). Among coping strategies, acceptance (M = 1.94) and active coping (M = 1.85) were chosen most frequently, while turning to religion and helplessness were chosen least frequently. Analysis of personal resources showed the highest scores in openness to experience and sense of humor. Interaction effects rarely reached statistical significance. The study group showed a profile of students who were stressed but had functional coping resources. The moderation analysis results indicate the complex nature of the relationships among the variables studied—although psychological resilience is a key resource, its role as a moderator of the relationship between coping strategies and stress is not universal and emerges only in specific areas of functioning. The data obtained suggest that psychological interventions should focus on strengthening existing resources (such as active coping) and developing resilience, which may serve as a buffer against the negative effects of academic stress.
This study investigates Moroccan high school teachers and students’ perceptions of humanistic language teaching in the AI era, with particular emphasis on ICT-enhanced and game-based pedagogical practices in Arabic and English classrooms. It compares instructional approaches adopted by Arabic and English teachers and examines the extent to which these practices foster a humanistic learning environment. The research explores the role of humour, educational games and digital tools in enhancing student engagement and participation. Special attention is given to the integration of ICT applications such as Kahoot as game-based learning tools that support interactive and student-centered instruction. A mixed-methods design was employed. Questionnaires were administered to teachers and students to collect quantitative data on their perceptions of humanistic and technology-enhanced teaching practices. Semi-structured interviews with teachers provided deeper insights into the pedagogical value of humour, games and ICT integration. Classroom observations involving twenty teachers examined the frequency and effectiveness of innovative practices in fostering humanistic learning. Additionally, an experimental intervention assessed the effectiveness of game-based digital tools in supporting vocabulary development. The findings indicate that both teachers and students hold positive perceptions of humanistic language teaching supported by ICT and game-based strategies. English teachers demonstrated greater integration of innovative practices than their Arabic counterparts. Results also show that students exhibit higher motivation, participation and interaction in technology-enhanced humanistic classrooms. The study concludes that combining humanistic pedagogy with ICT and game-based learning represents an effective approach to language teaching in the AI era.

Public speaking is a skill that develops individuals, impacts the surrounding world, and promotes one's career. Now, public speaking is practiced in various societies, regardless of the individual's position. For the millennial generation, whose lives are highly intertwined with technology in every aspect, such as learning, shopping, communication, and booking transportation, face-to-face interaction with the general public is limited. However, through mastering public speaking skills, millennials can enhance their social communication and boost their self-confidence. This training activity was conducted for millennials using the lecture, discussion, practical (role-playing), and mentoring methods. Lectures and discussions helped expand knowledge, while practical exercises (role-playing) trained and motivated the participants, enabling them to gain the courage and familiarity to address an audience. The training results showed that most of the presented material was understood by the participants. Most of the participants' questions served to reinforce or clarify the concepts discussed. Practical sessions ran smoothly; although the participants initially felt fearful or lacked confidence to stand before the group, this nervousness dissipated after subsequent opportunities to practice. Moreover, participants successfully explored their own potential, demonstrating organized and focused speech, clearer vocal delivery, and even the use of humor and engaging body language. All participants appeared more at ease but serious in demeanor. They expressed a hope for continued public speaking training, realizing that it was significantly beneficial for millennials, especially the university students, who are expected not only to excel in academics but also to possess excellent public speaking skills.
This qualitative, descriptive phenomenological study examines how Muhammad Iqdam Kholid communicates religious and social values at Majelis Taklim Sabilu Taubah in Blitar. Drawing on the underlying research report, it considers sermon recordings and transcripts, observations, interviews, field notes, and visual documentation. Informant accounts are grouped by organizers or representatives, in-person congregants, local micro-traders, and digital followers. Thematic coding identifies recurring rhetorical practices and values, which are interpreted through ethos, pathos, and logos alongside the Islamic principles of hikmah, mau'izhah hasanah, and mujadalah. The findings describe accessible Indonesian and Javanese language, humor, dialogue, scriptural explanation, and digital circulation as ways of making religious advice approachable. Sermons link repentance, worship, and moral character with solidarity, tolerance, social care, and responsible livelihoods. The article shows how rhetorical choices connect persuasion, community belonging, and the local economy within one setting. Practitioners can pair inclusive speech with religious grounding, audience participation, and fair management of gathering spaces. Because the report lacks longitudinal evidence, these findings concern documented practices and participant interpretations rather than proven behavioral change.
Abstract Understanding verbal humor in a second language (L2) is a hallmark of advanced communicative competence, yet its time course remains unclear. This study investigates the role of L2 exposure intensity in humor comprehension. Forty-two English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners (Intense vs. Limited Exposure) read jokes in which identical punchlines followed humorous or coherent setups and judged funniness. Behavioral results showed that responses were slower to humorous than to coherent endings, and accuracy was higher in the Intense Exposure group than in the Limited Exposure group. ERPs showed a larger N400 to humorous endings compared to coherent endings. A P600 effect to humorous endings was observed in the Intense Exposure group but not in the Limited Exposure group, suggesting greater engagement of reinterpretation under Intense Exposure. These findings support a conditioned two-stage model of L2 humor in which early detection is broadly preserved, whereas later reinterpretation depends on L2 exposure intensity.
