Beyond Compliance: Rethinking Pedagogy and Creative Epistemologies in Nigerian Postgraduate Education

Ademola Omoniyi Ajibade Milky Way Scientific Journal, 2026, Vol. 2, Issue 3, pp. 215-240 https://doi.org/10.65021/mwsj.v2.i3.58

Nigerian postgraduate education drives the nation's research capacity, yet it risks pedagogical inertia when quality assurance, including the National Universities Commission's minimum academic standards and accreditation, is reduced to procedural compliance. This paper rethinks postgraduate education by shifting attention toward pedagogies that foster intellectual agency, dialogue, epistemic plurality and context-sensitive knowledge production. Drawing on critical pedagogy, decolonial theory, Ubuntu and Igwebuike, and situated-learning theory, it uses a critical-integrative conceptual method and a purposive review of policy documents and Nigerian, African and international literature. The evidence is strongest for structural constraints on supervision and staff retention and for the Eurocentric orientation of methodological training in African research, but thin or inferential for prevailing pedagogy and examination practice; these claims are therefore advanced as nine testable hypotheses rather than established facts. The paper proposes four connected commitments (relational supervision, epistemic plurality, creative rigour and public relevance), operationalised through the CARE model (Criticality, Agency, Relationality and Epistemic creativity). It argues that standards should be an enabling floor rather than an intellectual ceiling, that resourcing rather than intent is the main obstacle to reform, and that CARE can be adopted through a staged, low-cost, workload-neutral pathway viable for early-career supervisors and under-funded state universities.

Engineering education in Nigeria is critical for national technological development and economic transformation. However, the sector faces persistent challenges, including inadequate funding, obsolete curricula, poor laboratory facilities, a shortage of qualified academic staff, and weak industry‑academia linkages. This article provides a comprehensive analysis of the current state of engineering education in Nigerian universities and polytechnics. Using a mixed‑methods approach comprising a review of policy documents, institutional surveys, and comparative benchmarking with global best practices, the study identifies key bottlenecks. Results show that only 38% of accredited engineering programmes meet minimum laboratory equipment standards, and student‑to‑lecturer ratios exceed 35:1 in 70% of institutions. Additionally, less than 20% of engineering graduates undergo industrial training of acceptable quality. The article presents a detailed table of accreditation status from the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) and another on graduate employability. Findings indicate a widening gap between curricular content and industry needs, leading to high graduate unemployment despite reported skill shortages. Recommendations include a sustainable funding model, mandatory curriculum revision every five years, establishment of regional engineering hubs, and a compulsory one‑year industry residency for lecturers. Policy implications for the National Universities Commission (NUC) and COREN are discussed. The article concludes that without urgent structural reforms, Nigeria’s vision of becoming a technologically driven economy by 2030 will remain unattainable.
