Abstract Amid growing calls for Australian universities to engage meaningfully with Indigenous knowledges, this article examines how Indigenous-led, place-based inquiry can reorient academic practice toward culturally regenerative possibilities. Drawing on a Cooperative Inquiry conducted with Whadjuk Noongar Boodjar, we follow six Noongar-led experiences involving Country, language, ceremony, deep time, embodiment and more-than-human relations. Through cycles of experiential, presentational and reflective practice, these engagements restructured attention, temporality and conduct, foregrounding relational ethics of permission, reciprocity and refusal. Multimodal forms including movement, image and creative response were treated as epistemic practices, enabling us to register affective and relational reorientations that are not readily accessible through propositional forms alone. Our analysis traces how these reorientations unsettled extractive research habits and repositioned knowledge-making as embodied, participatory and accountable to Country. We argue that culturally regenerative university practice does not emerge through policy statements, curricular add-ons or inclusion alone, but through lived, relational engagements that reconfigure how knowledge is generated, held and shared. The study contributes empirical insight into how such reconfigurations unfold in practice and highlights the institutional conditions required to sustain accountable relationships with place.

Country and Culture First: Towards Relational Governance for Culturally Regenerative Universities

Len Collard; Sandra Wooltorton; Vennessa Poelina; Marianne Jago; Laurie Guimond Australian Journal of Environmental Education, 2026, pp. 1-18 https://doi.org/10.1017/aee.2026.10212

Abstract In the context of planetary, social and epistemic crises, this paper explores how universities might transform governance practices to support culturally regenerative futures. Drawing on a cooperative inquiry within an international research group, the study develops the concept of relational governance as an alternative to dominant corporate models shaped by neoliberal logics. Grounded in Aboriginal and place-based epistemologies, the research proposes governance as an embodied, ethical and relational practice developed through attentive engagement with people, Country and more-than-human worlds. Relational governance values Aboriginal knowledge; activates reckoning and locale; and includes local Aboriginal councils to transform universities towards being welcoming, Aboriginal places for people of all backgrounds. Through storied narratives, the paper illustrates how knowledge is co-created through dialogue, ceremony and ecological participation, with Country understood as an active agent in decision-making. The findings highlight the importance of Aboriginal leadership, truth-telling and structural change within universities. Ultimately, the paper contributes to the growing movement toward culturally regenerative universities, offering relational governance as a pathway for institutions to foster an ethic of care, reciprocity and life-affirming futures.

Telling life stories through algorithms embedded in compositional processes

Luciana Perc Organised Sound, 2026, pp. 1-17 https://doi.org/10.1017/s1355771826101496

Abstract In this article, I examine how I embed algorithms in instrumental and electroacoustic compositional practices to organise numerical data drawn from extra-musical environmental and cosmological contexts within musical materials and structures. I explore such material-semiotic exchanges between music and surrounding environments to sonically reconfigure the matter of the life stories suggested by Ursula Le Guin, stories that challenge anthropocentric narratives. The aim of telling life stories aurally is to both explore Baradian new materialist feminist deployments of technologies and encourage conversations and reflections on the forms, causes and effects of the relationship between humanity and its environments as proposed by Donna Haraway. Through the integration of environmental and astronomical data into musical materials and structures, real-time sound processing, octophonic spatialisation and generative interactions, the works I composed and discuss in this article unravel the sonic textures of the displacement of vegetal species across the Earth, the formation of galaxies, the physical dynamics of bird flight and the pollution of the seas, creating meaningful intersections of different media to examine how sonic practices developed within hypermedial settings may narrate more-than-human processes.
