Aušra, Rudžianskienė; Jovita Beržinė; Viktorija Paulauskienė; Monika Balčytienė; Greta Staponkute International Journal of Innovative Research in Multidisciplinary Education, 2026, Vol. 05, Issue 10 https://doi.org/10.58806/ijirme.2026.v5i10n11

Eating disorders are complex mental health conditions that typically develop during adolescence or early adulthood and may have a significant adverse impact on both physical and mental health. The main types of eating disorders include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder, all of which are characterized by altered eating behaviours and associated health problems (Robatto et al., 2024). Eating disorders may be associated with a range of psychological and somatic complications, including depression, anxiety, cardiovascular and endocrine disorders, as well as an increased risk of mortality (Mushtaq et al., 2023). The effects of these disorders may also manifest in the oral cavity. Therefore, in dental hygiene practice, particular importance should be placed on the early recognition of potential oral health changes, individualized assessment of the patient’s oral health status, and the selection of appropriate preventive measures. Dental hygienists may play an important role not only in the prevention of oral diseases but also in the early recognition of oral manifestations potentially associated with eating disorders and in encouraging patients to seek timely multidisciplinary professional care.

Rie Kudoh; Taiga Shibayama PLoS ONE, 2026, Vol. 21, Issue 10, pp. e0361280 https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0361280

Educational support for nurses is essential to promote oral health management education for patients with diabetes. However, few studies have focused on supporting nurses in this context. This study explored the effects of an audiovisual material designed to support nurses’ patient education on oral health management in diabetes care. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight certified diabetes nurse educators. Data were analyzed using content analysis. Four main themes emerged: (1) enhancement of nurses’ individual learning (8/8 participants), including improved knowledge of the connection between oral health and diabetes; (2) promotion of professional development and reflection (5/8); (3) provision of new insights into patient care (7/8), particularly regarding patient motivation strategies; and (4) identification of implementation considerations in diabetes outpatient settings. The findings suggest that the audiovisual material, designed to complement an existing evidence-based educational guide, was perceived as useful and may support nurses’ learning and educational practices related to oral health education for patients with diabetes.

Anas J. Mistareehi; Ibrahim M. Hoja; Wafaa A. Mahmoud; Jessica R. L. Lieffers; George S. Katselis PLoS ONE, 2026, Vol. 21, Issue 10, pp. e0350313 https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0350313

Background Sleep disturbances and oral health problems are both prevalent public health concerns with substantial impacts on quality of life and systemic health. However, population-based evidence examining the independent associations between multiple dimensions of oral health and multiple sleep outcomes remains limited. This study investigated the associations between oral health indicators and sleep disturbances among Canadian adults using nationally representative survey data. Methods We utilized data from adults aged 18 years and older who completed the 2017–2018 Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS). Four oral health indicators were assessed: self-reported oral health, oral pain, bleeding gums, and dry mouth. Four sleep outcomes were examined: short sleep duration, insomnia symptoms, unrefreshing sleep, and difficulty staying awake. Multivariable logistic regression models were used, with progressive adjustment for sociodemographic factors, health status, and health behaviors. Results All four oral health indicators were significantly associated with most sleep outcomes in the full adjusted model. For short sleep duration, the strongest association was observed for poor oral health (AOR: 1.623). For insomnia symptoms, dry mouth (AOR: 1.904) and oral pain (AOR: 1.826) exhibited the strongest associations. For unrefreshing sleep, oral pain (AOR: 1.937) and dry mouth (AOR: 1.808) were associated with higher odds of reporting unrefreshing sleep. For difficulty staying awake, dry mouth (AOR: 1.720) and oral pain (AOR: 1.701) showed the strongest associations. Conclusion Oral health problems are associated with multiple dimensions of sleep disturbance. These findings highlight the need for integrated care and complementary screening between dental and sleep medicine.

Association between Cohabitation Status with a Spouse or Partner and Masticatory Discomfort among Older Adults in Korea

Na-Yeon Tak Journal of dental hygiene science, 2026, Vol. 26, Issue 3, pp. 243-253 https://doi.org/10.17135/jdhs.2026.26.3.243

Background: This study examined the association between cohabitation status and masticatory discomfort among older adults in Korea. Methods: This cross-sectional study analyzed 8 years of data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES), from 2016 to 2023.This study included 13,416 adults aged 65 years or older. The independent variable was cohabitation status with a spouse or partner, categorized as yes or no, and the dependent variable was self-reported masticatory discomfort.Complex-samples frequency analysis and cross-tabulation analyses were performed, followed by complex-samples logistic regression analysis to evaluate the association between cohabitation status with a spouse or partner and masticatory discomfort.Sampling weights were applied to account for the complex-sampling design of KNHANES.Results: Overall, 36.2% of the older adults experienced masticatory discomfort. The prevalence of masticatory discomfort was significantly higher among older adults who did not cohabit with a spouse or partner than among those cohabiting with a spouse or partner (43.0% vs. 33.0%,p<0.001).In the unadjusted model, the odds of masticatory discomfort were higher among older adults who did not cohabit with a spouse or partner than among those who did (odds ratio [OR]=1.532,95% confidence interval [CI]=1.403∼1.674,p<0.001).After adjusting for age, sociodemographic characteristics, health behaviors, systemic disease, perceived stress, and activity limitations, the association remained statistically significant (OR=1.171,95% CI=1.038∼1.320,p=0.010).Conclusion: Cohabitation with a spouse or partner was independently associated with masticatory discomfort in older adults in Korea. These findings suggest that the spouse/partner cohabitation status should be considered alongside clinical and health-related factors when identifying older adults who are vulnerable to oral function deterioration.Community-based oral health programs may benefit from incorporating the spouse/partner cohabitation status into screening and preventive oral health strategies for older adults.

Reimagining mentorship in competency-based dental education: An AI-enabled mentoring network framework

Vivek Kumar Bains; Prashant Kumar Singh; Shruti Singh; Devika Bhat; Sreenivasan Venkatraman; Rhythm Bains Journal of Healthcare Research and Education, 2026, Vol. 2, pp. 16 https://doi.org/10.25259/jhre_20_2026

Mentoring is increasingly recognized as a critical determinant of academic achievement, professional identity formation, career advancement, and well-being in health professions education. Conventional mentor-mentee models, typically centered on a single assigned faculty mentor, may be inadequate to address the diverse and evolving needs of contemporary dental learners and early-career faculty. The transition towards competency-based dental education (CBDE) under emerging National Dental Commission (NDC) reforms further underscores the need to enhance mentoring approaches that support competency attainment, reflective practice, research engagement, and career development. Recent mentoring literature advocates the development of mentoring networks and individualized mentoring pathways that extend beyond conventional dyadic relationships. Concurrently, advances in artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and learning analytics offer new opportunities to deliver personalized educational support at scale. This perspective explores the potential of AI-enabled mentoring networks as a strategy to strengthen mentoring and competency development in Indian dental education. Drawing on established mentoring theories, health professions education literature, and emerging educational technologies, we propose a conceptual framework integrating learner profiling, faculty profiling, intelligent mentor matching, dynamic mentoring road-maps, and longitudinal competency tracking. AI-enabled mentoring systems have the potential to enhance CBDE implementation and support the improvement of competent, adaptable, and future-ready oral health professionals. Future work should focus on ethical implementation, faculty preparedness, and evaluation of educational outcomes associated with technology-enhanced mentoring ecosystems.
