Traditional games offer accessible opportunities for physical activity, social interaction, and the introduction of local cultural practices among elementary school children. This study aimed to describe the implementation of PETRA AKTIF, a community service program introducing traditional games as alternative physical activities for elementary school students. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the program involved 28 third-grade students from Public Elementary School 3 Plumbon, Karanganyar Regency, Indonesia. Four traditional games were introduced: hopscotch, jump rope, fortress, and dragon snake. Data were collected through direct observation, interviews, and activity documentation and subsequently analyzed descriptively. Student satisfaction was assessed using a five-level response scale. The findings revealed that students participated in various physical movements, including jumping, walking, running, and balancing. Group activities also demonstrated observable communication, cooperation, coordination, and adherence to game rules. Satisfaction assessments indicated that 25–27 of the 28 participants reported being satisfied or very satisfied with each game. Furthermore, the activities provided students with direct exposure to traditional games as expressions of local wisdom. These findings suggest that PETRA AKTIF provides opportunities for physical engagement, peer interaction, and cultural familiarization, although improvements in physical fitness and social skills were not directly measured.

The splendid traditional culture of China reflects the indomitable spirit of self-improvement of the Chinese nation and the endless spiritual wealth of the Chinese people, and represents the common values of the Chinese people. This contains countless positive value concepts, philosophical feelings, modes of thinking, ritual systems, codes of conduct, and lifestyle practices, which will offer theoretical direction and spiritual guidance towards developing healthy ideological and moral character as well as instilling in the youth of the new era the core socialist values. General Secretary Xi Jinping has constantly stressed the importance of curriculum and textbooks playing their part in building a strong foundation and building up the spirit, as well as in brightening up minds and increasing wisdom; they should be the style of China and Chinese nation, and the result of the accumulation of knowledge on human cultural heritage and the outcome of innovations in this field. Hence, the incorporation of traditional culture education in primary, secondary, and higher education will greatly contribute to the successful realization of the mission of fostering virtue and nurturing talent in all schools.

Teacher identity formation under dual shaping of institutions and cultures: A comparative study of early childhood teachers in China and New Zealand

Feng Jiang Journal of Early Childhood Teacher Education, 2026, pp. 1-18 https://doi.org/10.1080/10901027.2026.2741731

Guided by the dual-shaping theory of institutions and culture, this comparative study examines the construction of professional identity among early childhood teachers in China and New Zealand, serving children aged 3–6 years in China and birth to school entry age in New Zealand, revealing how societal structures and cultural tradition’s mediate identity formation. Findings demonstrate divergent trajectories: Chinese teachers exhibit a “society-oriented” identity, emphasizing moral responsibility and collective values under Confucian cultural norms and centralized governance, which fosters an “implementer” orientation. In contrast, New Zealand teachers embody “professional autonomy,” rooted in individualistic cultural values and decentralized institutional systems that reinforce reflective practitioner roles. These differences underscore teacher identity as an outcome of institutional regulations and cultural values in interplay: China’s collectivism shapes an externally derived identity, while New Zealand’s autonomy-supportive structures and child-centered culture cultivate an internally driven identity. The study suggests that China’s early childhood teacher development could balance cultural heritage with institutional empowerment to expand professional agency, facilitating identity transformation. This cross-contextual comparison advances theoretical perspectives on the cultural adaptability of teacher professionalism.

Rites and Rituals of ‘ibe-ugwu’ as the Gateway to Womanhood in Igboland: The Ukawu Example

Johnson Okeke Science Development, 2026, Vol. 7, Issue 3, pp. 126-132 https://doi.org/10.11648/j.scidev.20260703.12

In all the manifestations of culture across the globe, there exist practices which celebrate life circle transitions especially from birth until the termination of human life. One of such practices is the rite of passage. One of such rites of passage is the 'ibe-ugwu' (circumcision) among the Ukawu people of Ebonyi State, Southeast Nigeria. 'Ibe-ugwu' witness the preparation and equipping of females adolescents to assume the roles of wives, mothers, and women in the society. It is the contention of this work, that the continued neglect of such cultural heritage is one of the major reasons for seeming African Igbo loss of identity, moral decadence and social vices amongst her youths today. The work advocates for a revival of such African Igbo cultural heritage. It further provides more exposition of an African Igbo culture to the wider audience and additional literature on culture, religion and law in Igboland. This research makes use of documental and interview methods of data gathering while deploying the sociological (structural functionalist) approach in its data analysis.
