Emmanuel Okolo; Amber Kearney; Gary Wingenbach; Josephine Engels; Andrea Usanga Frontiers in Public Health, 2026, Vol. 14, pp. 1900430 https://doi.org/10.3389/fpubh.2026.1900430

Mental healthcare needs are growing, yet awareness of available services remains limited, even in Houston, Texas. This study examined relationships between having experienced or been diagnosed with mental illness and awareness of community-based mental health or crisis services. Approximately 1,000 Houston-area adults were surveyed in 2024 and 2026. Chi-square and multivariable regression analyses showed that experience with mental illness was associated with SGM populations, race/ethnicity, and age after adjustment for sociodemographic characteristics. SGM participants had greater odds of reporting mental illness, whereas Black/African American, Hispanic/Latinx, Asian, and older adults had lower adjusted odds relative to their reference groups. Awareness of community-based services was independently associated with gender, SGM populations, race/ethnicity, age, and annual household income; females had greater odds of awareness, whereas Hispanic/Latinx, Asian, and older adults had lower odds. Findings highlight sociodemographic differences in reported experience with mental illness and awareness of community-based services. Longitudinal research is needed to further examine these relationships.

Corrine R. Sackett; Ryan M. Cook; A. Stephen Lenz; Bailey Nevels Journal of Counseling & Development, 2026, pp. jcad.70078 https://doi.org/10.1002/jcad.70078

ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of stakeholders with accessing and integrating client feedback into counseling through a constructivist phenomenological approach. Participants included clients, counselors, and administrators from one outpatient counseling clinic at a not‐for‐profit hospital system. Client participants included three clients (one male, one female, one nonbinary) who ranged in age from 27 to 63 years and identified as White ( n = 2) and Hispanic/Latino ( n = 1). Counselor participants included six counselors (four female, two male) who ranged in age from 50–71 years and whose racial identity consisted of African American ( n = 1), White ( n = 4), and unknown ( n = 1). Administrator participants included four administrators (three female, one unknown), who ranged in age from 34 to 58 years and all identified as White. Researchers conducted five interviews with three clients, two counselor focus groups, and one administrator focus group. Findings from the clients’ perspective included themes of: Feedback Shared and Not Shared, Counselor Creating an Environment of Safety is Foundational for Feedback, Process of Eliciting Feedback, and Perceived Outcomes of Client Feedback. Findings from the counselors’ perspective included themes of: We Don't Know What Clients are Thinking Unless We Ask Them, Client Autonomy, Collaboration with Client, and Organizational Climate. Findings from the administrators’ perspective included themes of: We Don't Know What Clients are Experiencing if We Don't Ask and Organizational Climate. Themes from each stakeholder perspective are described along with implications for clinical practice.

This research is part of a larger goal to capture the heritage, lived experiences, and scientific and cultural capital of Black people in the United States in the science curricula. This research examines the impact of a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) physics curriculum created for the K-12 classroom, which began with the lived experiences and narratives of an African American engineer. Multimedia and other curriculum products were developed and implemented using best practices in science education pedagogy. Participants were Black homeschoolers ages 3 to 14 and their parents located in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. Implementation was virtual, with Black homeschooled children meeting weekly on Zoom for 1 hour for a total of 8 weeks. This study used a pragmatic approach that combined the disciplinary expertise of multiple researchers to identify the best frameworks for capturing the emergent themes and essence of the interactions from video recordings and transcripts. Schema theory and Funds of Knowledge served as frameworks to explore and explain the large volume of video dialogues and transcripts emerging from this implementation. The study revealed themes and patterns which support best practices in content creation that centers Black narratives and lived experiences in the science curricula. The research has important implications for creating curricula that center cultural and heritage knowledge in meaningful ways in the science and STEM curricula using interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches.

Trauma, the Fragmented Psyche, and the Cycle of Repetition in Narratives of Maya Angelou

Maya Angelou

Abstract This paper examines trauma as a psychological wound that can affect memory, identity, behaviour, relationships, and the individual's sense of safety. It focuses particularly on childhood trauma, maternal abandonment, dissociation, repression, traumatic memory, repetition, sexual violence, and the struggle to return to a sense of wholeness. Drawing on the ideas of Revital Goodman, Sigmund Freud, Susan L. Bloom, Cathy Caruth, George Hartman, Sándor Ferenczi, Jay B. Frankel, and Kali Tal, the paper considers how traumatic experiences can remain active long after the original event has ended. It argues that childhood trauma is especially significant because it can shape the developing sense of self and influence how individuals respond to later experiences. Maternal care is considered an important source of security, while parental failure and abandonment can leave the child vulnerable to further trauma. The paper also examines dissociation as a protective response to overwhelming experiences and explores how repressed memories may return through repetition, flashbacks, behaviour, and storytelling. The idea of a Sisyphean cycle is used to describe the repeated struggle of the trauma survivor to escape the past while continually returning to it. Particular attention is given to sexual violence and the experiences of women, especially African American women, whose psychological wounds may be intensified by racial and social oppression. The paper concludes that trauma may fragment the psyche, but remembering, narrating, and confronting painful experiences can also become part of the movement towards healing and psychological reintegration. Keywords: trauma, childhood trauma, maternal abandonment, dissociation, fragmented psyche, memory, repression, repetition, sexual violence, African American women, healing

High burden of depressive symptoms among sexual and gender diverse persons in Brazil: The role of discrimination, internalized homonegativity, and race

Sexual and gender diverse (SGD) populations have historically faced restricted rights and systematic discrimination for deviating from the established hetero-cis-normative norms. This long-standing marginalization has a profound negative impact on health outcomes, including a heightened risk of developing mental health issues, such as depression. Understanding the health-disease process among SGD populations requires recognizing that discriminatory experiences, such as homophobia and transphobia, are not unidimensional, but operate synergistically with layered forms of discrimination, such as racism. We assessed depressive symptoms using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) among SGD persons in Brazil using race as a stratification variable. We also evaluated the role of discrimination and internalized homonegativity on depressive symptoms, while adjusting for covariates. This was a cross-sectional online survey recruiting SGD persons aged 18 years or older, living in Brazil, through dating apps and social media. Overall, 6220 participants were included, 3749 (60.3%) White, 1685 (27.1%) Pardo and 786 (12.6%) Black. Mean scores of depressive symptoms was 8.8 (SD7.1), higher among Black (9.6; SD 7.5) and Pardo (9.3; SD 7.2) than White (8.4; SD7.0) (p < 0.0001). Considering a PHQ-9 cut-off of ≥10 points, more Black and Pardo participants reported depressive symptoms than White participants (38.5%, 38.1%; 32.3%, respectively). In multivariable linear regression models, higher discrimination score and younger age were associated with higher scores of depressive symptoms for all races. Additionally, internalized homonegativity and lower income were associated with higher depressive symptoms scores for Pardo and White, but not for Black participants. To effectively address vulnerability to depression among SGD populations, it is essential to establish approaches that consider the intersections between different forms of oppression. This includes policies that tackle racism, homophobia, and transphobia, as well as investment in accessible mental health services.
