This life, or the lives of others? Rethinking mortality as vulnerability

Finn Bowring Mortality, 2026, pp. 1-15 https://doi.org/10.1080/13576275.2026.2740070

The condition of mortality is conventionally understood as the possession of a finite lifetime. As lifetimes have lengthened, and ageing and dying have become more protracted, a more open awareness of mortality has emerged. The de-tabooing of death has increased the pertinence of the existential injunction to authenticate ‘this life’, but arguably it is also accompanied by more casual attitudes to the deaths of others, as reflected in the popularity of dark tourism, the viral spread of images of military and terrorist killings, and the view, shared by advocates of assisted dying, that some lives would be better brought to a faster end. In this article I argue that a more truthful understanding of the human condition of mortality would conceptualise it not as finitude but as vulnerability. When we think of mortality as a limit of time, death becomes another component of life to be consumed or mastered before time runs out. Rethinking mortality as vulnerability, on the other hand, reminds us that dependency and suffering are conditions of caring about the world, and of finding meaning in lives other than, and after, our own.

Dark tourism is a type of tourism that involves visits to memorial sites, museums, and cemeteries to commemorate painful events experienced by societies in the past and to honor those who lost their lives in disasters and national heroes. This research aims to examine visitors' experiences at the Aziziye and Mecidiye Forts within the Commander-in Chief Historical National Park and Nene Hatun National Park, which are dark tourism destinations in Türkiye, as well as the emotional, identity-related, and cultural reflections of these experiences. The study was conducted using the phenomenological approach, one of the qualitative research methods; data were obtained by analyzing online visitor comments on Google and TripAdvisor platforms using thematic analysis. The findings show that visitors expressed deep emotional responses in all three areas, with national identity, heroism, and spiritual values coming to the fore. Although the Aziziye and Mecidiye Forts inspire pride with their tales of heroism, they are a source of disappointment due to neglect. The Commander in-Chief National Park is the area where national pride and spirituality are felt most intensely. The study has revealed that these war-zone destinations contribute to strengthening national identity by keeping collective memory alive. Consequently, strengthening the maintenance, management, and information infrastructure of these areas is recommended as a fundamental requirement for enhancing the emotional and educational experience. the emotional and educational experience.
