Many children who experience reading challenges develop co-occurring mental health difficulties, such as reading anxiety. The current study tested the relationships between specific reading skills (decoding, fluency, and comprehension) and reading anxiety symptoms. Participants were 230 twins between 8 and 13 years old. Multi-level linear regression models were used to account for family relationships and covaried for age and sex. Age was positively associated and sex was not associated with reading anxiety. Lower decoding (β = -0.19, p < .001), reading fluency (β = -0.22, p < .001), and reading comprehension skills (β = -0.22, p < .001) were significantly associated with higher reading anxiety symptoms. When testing whether each reading skill contributed to reading anxiety after controlling for others, reading comprehension (β = -0.15, p = .010) remained significantly associated with reading anxiety symptoms, whereas decoding (β = 0.01, p = .90) and reading fluency (β = -0.13, p = .08) were no longer significant. Model comparisons followed a similar pattern indicating that reading comprehension (and to a lesser extent fluency) accounted for significant variance in reading anxiety over and above other reading skills, while decoding did not. Secondary analyses covarying for clinical anxiety and ADHD symptoms showed that the association between reading skills and reading anxiety could not be accounted for by these co-occurring symptoms. This study is among the first to examine relationships between specific reading skills and reading anxiety symptoms and highlights the need for improved identification and treatment of reading anxiety symptoms in struggling readers.
Abstract Drawing on Luthar’s relational framework of resilience, this study examines how parental resilience operates within marital dynamics to shape adolescent adjustment in Mexican-origin families. Using four waves of data from 604 families (M adolage = 12.41, SD = 0.97; 54.3% girls), we tested a longitudinal cascade linking W1 parental resilience to W4 adolescent anxiety and substance use via W2 marital warmth, W3 marital satisfaction, and W3 adolescents’ perceptions of interparental conflict. Actor-partner interdependence models revealed both intrapersonal and interpersonal pathways: wives’ resilience predicted own marital warmth, whereas husbands’ resilience predicted wives’ warmth. Indirect effects indicated that wives’ resilience was associated with lower adolescent anxiety and substance use through warmer marital interactions, higher marital satisfaction, and reduced perceived conflict. These findings position resilience as a promotive relational resource enacted within the marital dyad, advancing interparental positivity spillover theory by identifying parental resilience as upstream drivers of family processes that shape adolescent psychopathology.
Abstract This study examined how adolescent and parent emotional reactivity to daily parent–adolescent conflict is associated with adolescent psychopathology over time. A community sample of 237 Taiwanese parent–adolescent dyads (adolescents: M age = 14.80, SD age = 2.08; 58% female; parents: M age = 42.36, SD age = 8.57; 68% female) completed 10 days of daily reports on parent–adolescent conflict and emotions, and adolescents reported depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, and externalizing problems at baseline and six-month follow-up. The results showed that greater adolescent negative emotional (NE) reactivity predicted higher depressive ( β = .17) and anxiety symptoms ( β = .21), and adolescent positive emotional (PE) reactivity predicted higher depressive symptoms ( β = .13), anxiety symptoms ( β = .19), and externalizing problems ( β = .17). Parent NE reactivity predicted higher adolescent depressive symptoms ( β = .29) and externalizing problems ( β = .15). Age moderated the associations between parent reactivity and anxiety symptoms, such that higher parent NE and PE reactivity were associated with greater anxiety only among younger adolescents. Findings highlight that daily emotional reactivity to parent–adolescent conflict is associated with adolescent psychopathology and underscore that parent reactivity represents a distinct risk process, especially consequential for anxiety in early adolescence.
Anxiety and depression frequently co-occur in children and adolescents, but studies of their joint presentation use different units of analysis. This scoping review examined how those approaches connect and where evidence remains limited. We searched PubMed, Web of Science Core Collection, Scopus, and APA PsycINFO for English-language studies available from 2010 to 11 May 2026. We mapped 205 eligible studies across eight non-exclusive empirical themes and interpreted their distribution from a developmental perspective. Study designs varied with the constructs examined. Among 52 symptom-network studies, 37 analysed cross-sectional data and 15 used longitudinal or trajectory cohort designs. Only 16 of 170 risk-factor studies also evaluated treatment outcomes. One symptom-network study linked network-derived findings to a neurobiological measure. Developmental and geographical coverage was uneven. Three studies were child-focused, and the United States and China accounted for 69.27% of the evidence. The descriptive Global South aggregate accounted for 5.85%. These patterns identify priorities for longitudinal within-person research, developmental stratification, and studies linking symptom models to biological measures and intervention mechanisms. Locally validated measures and research in underrepresented settings are needed to assess whether findings transfer across populations.
