Socially complex peer play and preschoolers' prosocial judgment: the role of earlier mental state knowledge

Mayuko Kato-Shimizu; Asami Harada Frontiers in Developmental Psychology, 2026, Vol. 4, pp. 1986076 https://doi.org/10.3389/fdpys.2026.1986076

Socially complex peer play may provide opportunities for children to coordinate perspectives, negotiate roles, and respond to others' needs, but its association with prosocial judgment may differ according to children's social-cognitive resources. This small-scale longitudinal study examined whether mental state knowledge assessed at age 4–5 conditioned the concurrent association between socially complex peer play and prosocial judgment assessed at age 5–6. Participants were 35 children from a private nursery school in Japan. Mental state knowledge was assessed using a false-belief task. At age 5–6, children completed helping and sharing judgment tasks, and their free play was observed naturalistically across repeated focal-child observations. Socially complex peer play was indexed by the combined proportion of associative and cooperative play. Hierarchical regression analyses showed that the interaction between earlier mental state knowledge and socially complex peer play significantly predicted sharing judgment. The corresponding interaction for helping was positive but did not reach the conventional significance threshold. Sensitivity analyses using heteroskedasticity-consistent standard errors supported the sharing result. Given the modest sample size, the findings should be interpreted as preliminary. They suggest that the association between socially complex peer play and prosocial judgment may differ according to children's earlier social-cognitive resources.

Integrating Theory of Mind into Embodied Agents for Human-Aware Interaction

Mohammed Zeinu Hassen Science Futures, 2026, Vol. 2, Issue 5, pp. 347-359 https://doi.org/10.11648/j.scif.20260205.21

As embodied artificial agents (social robots, virtual assistants, and collaborative manipulators) move from controlled laboratories into homes, hospitals, and workplaces, their ability to interpret and anticipate human mental states becomes as important as their physical competence. This paper presents a unified theoretical and architectural account of how Theory of Mind (ToM), the capacity to attribute beliefs, desires, intentions, and emotions to others, can be integrated into embodied agents to support human-aware interaction. We first formalize a computational notion of ToM suitable for embodied settings, distinguishing zero-order perceptual inference from first- and second-order recursive belief attribution, and we relate these levels to the demands of everyday human-agent collaboration. We then propose a modular architecture, the Belief-Intention-Action (BIA) framework, that couples multimodal perception with a hybrid Bayesian-neural mental-state estimator, a hierarchical intention inference module, and an action-selection policy that explicitly conditions on inferred human mental states. The architecture is instantiated on both a simulated humanoid platform and a physical mobile manipulator and evaluated across three interaction scenarios: collaborative object handover, ambiguous instruction resolution, and false-belief-sensitive assistance. Compared with baseline agents lacking explicit mental-state modeling, the ToM-equipped agent achieves higher task success, faster adaptation to human error, and improved subjective ratings of perceived understanding and comfort, while ablation studies confirm the contribution of second-order reasoning to false-belief tasks. We conclude by discussing implications for trust calibration, the computational cost of recursive mental-state reasoning, and the ethical responsibilities that accompany machines that model human minds.

CONSCIOUSNESS UNDER PRESSURE

Akmal; Abishek Lingam D.K; Aadil khan; Areeb khan JOURNAL OF ANALYTICAL SYNERGY AND SCIENTIFIC HORIZON, 2026 https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.23190295

Consciousness is the one thing each of us knows with absolute certainty — and the one thing science has the hardest time explaining. It is also fragile. Certain molecules, taken deliberately or by accident, can rearrange it within minutes; certain illnesses can entrench false beliefs so stubbornly that no argument can dislodge them. This article tells the story of two ways the mind's grip on reality can loosen: hallucinogens, the classic psychedelic compounds now undergoing a remarkable clinical renaissance, and mixed delusions, the clinically common but under discussed condition in which a person harbours two or more delusional themes at once.
