Negotiating expectation–reality mismatches during university transition: A qualitative study of first-year students in South Africa

Molokwane Revelation Matthews Serathi; Oluwatoyin Ayodele Ajani International Journal of Studies in Psychology, 2026, Vol. 6, Issue 3, pp. 88-96 https://doi.org/10.66434/ijspsy.v6i3.612

The transition from secondary school to higher education is a critical period that shapes students' academic engagement, social integration, and persistence. Despite increased access to higher education in South Africa, many first-year students enter university with expectations that differ substantially from their subsequent experiences, creating adjustment challenges. Guided by Tinto's Theory of Student Integration and Educational Transition Theory, this study explored first-year students' expectations. It examined how students perceived and experienced mismatches between these expectations and the realities of university life. The study adopted an interpretivist qualitative research paradigm and an exploratory descriptive design. Data were collected through three focus group discussions with 21 purposively selected first-year students at a comprehensive university in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. They were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. The findings revealed an expectation–reality mismatch in three areas: social integration and peer relationships, course selection and academic guidance, and academic workload alongside self-directed learning demands. Participants who identified as first-generation students described experiencing additional transition difficulties, which they associated with limited social and cultural capital, inadequate career guidance, and low digital literacy. Participants also associated persistent socioeconomic inequality with these difficulties. The study concludes that expectation–reality mismatch is a psychologically meaningful mechanism through which structural inequality translates into experiences of uncertainty, diminished belonging, and academic disengagement during the first year. Strengthened orientation, mentoring, academic advising, and digital literacy support are recommended to improve student adjustment, engagement, and retention.

Higher education institutions are being urged to offer supplementary courses that enhance regular academic programs due to the increasing emphasis on employability and skill development. These courses are designed to give students professional certifications, industry-relevant competences, and useful skills that improve their preparedness for the workforce. The goal of this study is to determine whether there is a substantial correlation between students' motivations and the kind of add-on course they choose. It also looks at the factors that influence students' enrollment in these courses.Using primary data gathered from 106 University of Mumbai undergraduate students via a structured questionnaire, a descriptive and analytical study approach was used.Convenience sampling was used, and the Pearson Chi-Square test and cross-tabulation were used for data analysis. The results showed that the main reasons for taking additional courses were certification, academic interest, job promotion, and skill development.Nevertheless, the Chi-Square analysis revealed no statistically significant correlation between the type of add-on course chosen and the students' motivations (χ² = 6.737, df = 12, p = 0.874).Among various incentive groups, professional and certification-based courses were found to be the most popular category. The study comes to the conclusion that although students have a variety of reasons for taking extra courses, these reasons have little bearing on the type of course they choose.Higher education institutions, curriculum designers, and legislators can use the findings to create adaptable, learner-centered, industry-focused add-on programs that enhance graduate employability and promote lifelong learning.

A Toolkit, Not a Verdict: Redesigning Student Evaluations of Teaching as Unstuments for Assessment and Learning

Brandon K. Chicotsky; Stephen Jenkins Intersection A Journal at the Intersection of Assessment and Learning, 2026 https://doi.org/10.61669/001c.172164

Student evaluations of teaching (SET) remain the most widely used—and most contested—form of feedback in U.S. higher education. Evidence documents validity threats, including confounding from course difficulty, grading, modality, and student and instructor demographics, plus a persistent gap between in-the-moment experience and longer-horizon learning. Yet SET still anchor consequential personnel decisions and function within market logics that shape course selection and branding. Rather than abandoning SET, this paper asks how the instrument can be redesigned to serve assessment for learning. Using design-based research, the authors synthesized peer-reviewed and grey literature, audited an existing instrument in a graduate business-leadership course, and iteratively developed a revised SET built on learning-centered teaching, customizable course-level items, and a common cross-disciplinary core. The paper presents the redesign process, early implementation evidence, and a transferable toolkit. A redesigned instrument is necessary but insufficient; lasting change also requires aligning instruments with institutional incentives.
