Impact of Online Classes on Students with Learning Disabilities

Mubassira K C; Chethana R Acharya International Journal of Science and Research (IJSR), 2026, Vol. 15, Issue 10, pp. 1999-2000 https://doi.org/10.21275/sr261028131731

Online learning can improve access to educational materials, but it may also create additional demands for school-aged learners who experience learning disabilities. This study examined perceived academic, emotional, behavioural, and adaptation-related outcomes of online classes among students in Grades 1-10 with learning difficulties, drawing on student, parent, and teacher reports. The dissertation describes a quantitative, cross-sectional survey involving 95 participants and the use of the Learning Disabilities Checklist (LDC), Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), Online Learning Readiness Scale (OLRS), and a researcher-developed questionnaire. Reported findings indicate difficulties with attention, comprehension, task completion, and motivation in online settings, alongside lower perceived academic performance than in traditional classrooms. Parent and teacher reports were associated with students? reported learning difficulties. A significant association was reported between student and teacher reports, χ2(1, N = 95) = 20.5, p < .001, φ = .465; a similar association was reported for student and parent reports, χ2(1, N = 95) = 21.0, p < .001, φ = .471. Student and parent reports of emotional wellbeing were also positively correlated, ρ = .674, p < .001. The findings suggest that online learning requires structured routines, accessible teaching materials, trained educators, and coordinated family-school support to better accommodate learners with learning disabilities. Results should be interpreted cautiously because detailed descriptive scores and an effect estimate for the academic comparison were not reported consistently in the dissertation.

BACKGROUND: People who are agitated, confused or distressed seldom receive holistic care within acute general hospitals. Unmet needs relating to conditions such as mental illnesses, learning disabilities or dementia can contribute to patient behaviours which staff find challenging to manage (e.g. self-harm). Enhanced observation, involving one-to-one care and monitoring, is a restrictive intervention often used to manage these presentations. The characteristics and outcomes of high-quality enhanced observation in this setting remain ill-defined, compromising quality and safety. AIMS: To understand what constitutes high-quality, safe enhanced observation in an acute general hospital for patients presenting with agitated, confused or distressed behaviours. METHOD: A systematic review was performed, involving searches of five bibliographic databases, hand-searching, and forward and backward citation searching. Data describing the characteristics of high-quality, safe enhanced observation practice were eligible and included in a framework-based synthesis. Quality and safety outcomes were summarised thematically. Studies were appraised for quality, and data interpretation was shaped by lived experience experts. RESULTS: Fifty studies were included. Enhanced observation practice was influenced by individual staff members (e.g. attitudes), teams (e.g. teamwork fluency) and wider organisational factors (e.g. leadership, organisational culture). The quality and safety problems identified included self-harm, aggression and staff neglect of caring responsibilities during enhanced observation. CONCLUSIONS: Findings on the characteristics and outcomes of high-quality, safe enhanced observation provision should inform the development of evidence-based guidance to support improved, standardised practice in acute general hospitals. Evidence gaps with respect to patient experiences of enhanced observation and trauma-informed approaches to its delivery warrant urgent attention.

What does educational inclusion mean in theory and practice for learners with severe and profound learning disabilities?

This paper is a dialogue between two experts in the field of the education of children and young people with severe and profound learning disabilities (SLD/PMLD) who address the question: What does educational inclusion mean in theory and practice for learners with severe and profound learning disabilities? The dialogue illustrates how concepts reflect a dynamic interaction between value positions and conceptual framing. Peter Imray argues that curricula for all do not work for all. He argues that even strong differentiation of the same curricula does not serve learners with SLD/PMLD well. But, he has become an inclusion believer, based on the teaching of specialised curricula in mainstream schools and that inclusion for all is an honourable ambition. Nicola Grove's starting point is that educational inclusion cannot be separated from societal inclusion because it is in schools where children learn who are their peers. She questions Imray's arguments for distinct curricula, which she attributes to questionable beliefs that “severe” and “profound” are distinguishable categories and that children with SLD/PMLDs learn in completely different ways to typical pupils. For her educational inclusion is a complex process and even with mixed outcomes evidence, inclusive settings do offer some positive gains. Partial inclusion is presented as a relevant concept when there are divergent concepts of inclusion. They both agree that: SLD and PMLD are lifelong conditions, educational inclusion is critical to societal inclusion, and those with PMLD and SLD are amongst the most marginalised in society. They both favour resource bases in community schools, staffed by skilled professionals, collaborating with mainstream teachers; investing in social and academic inclusion, with a flexible approach to when and how children learn. Brahm Norwich in his commentary interprets their ideas of inclusion as involving both learner engagement in what is personally relevant, but also about social participation in local schools. He suggests that the challenge of inclusion can be considered as finding a balance between these two aspects. His conclusion is that too much focus on the personal can risk an over-emphasis on ‘difference’ and too much focus on the social can risk an over-emphasis on the ’same'.
