Rural-origin students in South African higher education face multiple, overlapping forms of marginalisation that collectively hinder their academic access and success. Despite significant policy reforms aimed at expanding access and addressing historical injustices, the educational paths of these learners are still disproportionately affected by a combination of socio-economic deprivation, linguistic exclusion, gendered vulnerabilities, and technological marginalisation. This systematic review synthesises current empirical evidence to clarify how these intersectional barriers merge to obstruct the educational journeys of rural-origin students in South African higher education. It also critically examines how institutional policies and technological interventions may unintentionally reinforce or potentially alleviate these inequities. The study followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, conducting a comprehensive search across multiple academic databases for studies published between 2018 and 2026. After a rigorous screening and eligibility process, 52 studies met the inclusion criteria and underwent thematic analysis guided by Nancy Fraser's trivalent social justice framework. Five overarching themes emerged: The multidimensional digital divide; linguistic exclusion and the devaluation of vernacular knowledge; gendered vulnerabilities and the burden of social reproduction; algorithmic bias and the risks associated with technological solutionism; and governance gaps alongside the failure of participatory parity. The findings revealed that existing equity frameworks inadequately address the structural dimensions of rural marginalisation. Achieving educational equity necessitates a fundamental shift towards intersectionality-aware, context-sensitive institutional policies that prioritise resource redistribution, cultural recognition, and the meaningful representation of students from rural backgrounds in decision-making processes.
Across Sub-Saharan Africa, persistent misalignment between education systems and labour market structures has constrained the translation of educational expansion into equitable employment outcomes. In response to graduate unemployment and skills mismatch, Tanzania introduced the National Framework for Academia-Industry Collaboration in Skills Development and Employability in 2026 to institutionalize governance coordination, strengthen work-based learning, and enhance labour market responsiveness. While the framework adopts a demand-driven orientation, the extent to which it embeds structural inclusion mechanisms remains insufficiently examined. This paper undertakes a systematic qualitative policy review of the framework to interrogate its governance architecture, demand-alignment logic, and inclusion provisions. Guided by systems theory, human capital perspectives, and intersectionality frameworks, the analysis evaluates the framework against international models of skills governance and labour inclusion. Findings indicate that the framework demonstrates structural coherence in institutional coordination and industry engagement; however, it lacks explicit disability-disaggregated labour data systems, employer accommodation financing mechanisms, and intersectional monitoring indicators necessary to prevent the reproduction of labour market inequalities. This study contributes to the literature by integrating systems theory with intersectionality-informed disability studies to evaluate skills governance beyond economic responsiveness alone. The paper argues that demand-driven skills development, when detached from legally embedded inclusion safeguards and disability-responsive financing instruments, risks reinforcing gendered and disability-based disparities in employment outcomes. It concludes that Tanzania’s framework constitutes a significant policy reform platform but requires structural integration of inclusive governance mechanisms to ensure equitable participation and sustainable employability in the evolving labour market. It concludes that Tanzania's framework provides a strong foundation for reform but should be strengthened through disability-responsive labour market information systems, employer accommodation incentives, accessible work-based learning standards, and intersectional accountability mechanisms to ensure inclusive and sustainable skills development.
Background Past research has consistently demonstrated that cisnormative pressures impact on the wellbeing of transgender and non-binary (TGNB) individuals, but questions remain about TGNB young adults’ experiences of ‘obligation’ in light of transnormative pressures.Aims The aim of the current study was therefore to explore experiences of obligation among TGNB young adults and identify what aspects of life may be reinforcing these obligations. Methods Seven focus groups were conducted with a total of 24 TGNB young adults with varying genders to hear their experiences of obligations. Results Reflexive thematic analysis resulted in four themes describing the nature of obligation for TGNB young adults. The first theme covers the obligation to be a ‘good’ TGNB person, including two subthemes about being ‘good’ by meeting everyone’s expectations and being ‘good’ by being polite and palatable. The second theme describes obligations related to fulfilling multiple roles, including intersectionality with culture. The third theme addresses participants’ experiences of feeling required to be the expert on TGNB topics. The fourth theme covers the obligation to accept conflicting narratives about TGNB journeys where TGNB individuals may passively uphold transnormative stereotypes but also actively manage how they are perceived by others. Conclusions These findings demonstrate specific experiences of obligation unique to TGNB individuals, highlighting the interconnected external and internal nature of these obligations. This research also highlights how these obligations are reinforced by the negative societal views of TGNB identities, transnormative ideals, and perceived homogeneity of TGNB community members.
Climate change is intrinsically linked to gender. Evidence shows women face the greatest impacts of climate change due to higher poverty presence, reliance on land, family responsibilities, and less societal power. Our study uses Carol Bacchi's “What is the Problem Represented to Be?” (WPR) approach to analyse climate change and gender policies in Mauritius, a small island state. We apply a two-dimensional theory of gender justice that foregrounds both economic distribution and social recognition. The findings highlight the need for a transformative approach to climate policymaking that moves beyond tokenistic gender mainstreaming to address the structural and socio-cultural inequalities that shape climate vulnerability. For small island states like Mauritius, this requires strengthening locally led, intersectional climate governance and reducing dependence on externally driven policy agendas to advance both climate resilience and gender justice.
Child abuse is recognized as a global health issue, but there are vast differences in parenting practices across cultures. Parenting behaviors and discipline strategies acceptable in some countries may be considered abusive in the U.S. This study sought to develop the Parenting Practices and Discipline Scale (PPDS) to assess parental practices that may be culturally acceptable but potentially harmful to children. Two related studies were conducted: the first established the initial psychometric properties of the PPDS using exploratory factor analysis (EFA), which supported a two-factor structure reflecting culturally acceptable vs. abusive discipline practices, and the second utilized regression analyses with a diverse sample of 1,089 college students to test the PPDS. Findings indicated that gender and parental status were the strongest predictors, with women and parents more likely to classify behaviors as abusive. Among Hispanic participants, those not born in the U.S. were more likely to view certain behaviors (e.g., spanking) as abusive compared to U.S.-born Hispanics. Across racial/ethnic groups, Hispanic participants were more likely than Black participants to classify culturally acceptable practices as abusive. These results underscore that demographic factors can shape perceptions of what practices are considered abusive. Furthermore, the intersectionality of different identities can create further differences. The PPDS represents a novel measure that captures culturally situated discipline practices not assessed in existing tools. Although findings offer preliminary support for validity, future research should evaluate the scale through confirmatory factor analysis and measurement invariance testing across cultural groups. This study aimed to develop and validate the Parenting Practices and Discipline Scale (PPDS), a tool designed to assess attitudes toward parental behaviors and discipline techniques. Findings suggest that gender and parental status are significant influences in perception of abusive acts. Analysis revealed significant differences in perceptions across racial and ethnic identities. The findings suggest a need for development of parenting programs targeting potentially abusive parenting behaviors among minority groups.
Abstract In this article, I argue that Black Consciousness philosophy, as articulated by Steve Biko in I Write What I Like (2004), becomes philosophically universalizable only when it is reworked through a Black women's praxis, already enacted by Blackwomen political prisoners under Apartheid. I show that Blackwomen's praxis , exemplified by Caesarina Kona Makhoere in her autobiography, No Child's Play: In Prison Under Apartheid (1988), realizes the existential and political promises of Black Consciousness more fully than Biko's articulation, which often prioritized race. It should be noted that the goal of the essay is not to offer a corrective add‐on to Black Consciousness; rather, the objective is to build a philosophical reconstruction of its conditions of possibility and freedom in ways that are intersectional, analytical, and in praxis .
I Write What I Like No Child's Play: In Prison Under Apartheid
