A physiology-guided multimodal learning framework for EEG-free driver behavior recognition using peripheral biosignals

Huaqiang Xu; Honghan Li; JJ Zhao Journal of King Saud University - Computer and Information Sciences, 2026, Vol. 38, Issue 9 https://doi.org/10.1007/s44443-026-01338-6

Accurate driver behavior recognition is important for driver monitoring systems and intelligent transportation applications. Although EEG-based approaches can provide useful neural information, their practical use is often limited by sensing complexity, preparation burden, and sensitivity to motion artifacts. This study proposes a physiology-guided multimodal learning framework for EEG-free driver behavior recognition using peripheral biosignals. A publicly available multimodal driving physiology dataset was used, including recordings from 35 participants performing five driving behaviors: smooth driving, acceleration, deceleration, lane change, and turning. Three peripheral physiological signals, namely ECG, EMG, and GSR, were used as model inputs. The proposed framework incorporates physiological knowledge into multimodal representation learning through modality-aware encoders tailored to the distinct characteristics of ECG, EMG, and GSR. A physiology-guided fusion mechanism is further introduced to model complementary cross-modal interactions among the three biosignals. Experimental results showed that the proposed ECG+EMG+GSR model achieved an average accuracy of 0.782 and a macro-F1 score of 0.783 under a five-fold evaluation protocol with separated training, validation, and test sets, with MCC and Cohen’s kappa reaching 0.711 and 0.711, respectively. Compared with EEG-only and full-modality baselines reported in the original dataset study, the proposed framework demonstrated the feasibility of EEG-free driver behavior recognition using only peripheral biosignals. Under the matched ECG+EMG+GSR input setting, the proposed framework outperformed the strongest baseline across all four evaluation metrics. In addition, sensing-configuration analysis showed that ECG+EMG+GSR provided a favorable balance between recognition performance and sensing burden. These results indicate that physiology-guided multimodal learning can effectively exploit heterogeneous peripheral biosignals for accurate and interpretable EEG-free driver behavior recognition.

Alertness-related differences in CF strategy among truck drivers based on naturalistic driving data

Yang Liu; Zhijie Yi; Boyu Jin; Dengbo He; Weiyin Xie Accident Analysis & Prevention, 2026, Vol. 239, pp. 108790 https://doi.org/10.1016/j.aap.2026.108790

Driver drowsiness is a major safety concern in heavy-duty truck operation, particularly in freeway car-following (CF) scenarios that require prolonged vigilance and continuous longitudinal control. However, how drowsiness-induced reduced alertness influences truck drivers’ CF behavior in real-world settings remains insufficiently understood. To address this gap, this study established a naturalistic heavy-truck CF dataset from long-haul freeway operations, with driver alertness labels obtained from a Smart Eye system. A three-level analytical framework was adopted to examine the effects of alertness on CF behavior from the perspectives of high-level behavioral indicators, model-based mechanism characterization, and primitive-level temporal structure. Specifically, overall CF performance was first described using commonly used indicators, then parameterized using the Intelligent Driver Model (IDM), and further interpreted at a finer temporal scale through behavioral primitives identified by a disentangled sticky hierarchical Dirichlet process hidden Markov model (DS-HDP-HMM). The results consistently showed that reduced alertness was associated with changes in drivers’ longitudinal adjustment patterns, which may partly reflect compensatory responses. Compared with alert driving, non-alert driving was associated with a more conservative spacing strategy, milder and less aggressive longitudinal regulation, and more near-constant and weak-regulation behavioral primitives, while active acceleration and deceleration corrections were less frequent. These findings provide a multi-level understanding of the longitudinal control mechanisms underlying non-alert truck driving in freeway environments and offer behavioral evidence for the development of intelligent driving assistance systems that can better respond to non-alert road truck drivers.

Lola Díaz-Feliz; Marcos Faúndez-Zanuy; Andrea Gennari; Alexia Teresa Sanchez-Reyes; Pilar Sanz-Cartagena; José Arbelo‐González; … Movement Disorders Clinical Practice, 2026, pp. mdc3.70835 https://doi.org/10.1002/mdc3.70835

BACKGROUND: Digital handwriting distinguishes PD patients from healthy controls but is rarely assessed quantitatively. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate digital handwriting as an objective tool to assess motor impairment, dopaminergic response, and progression in PD. METHODS: Participants (Healthy Controls, n = 52; De Novo PD Patients assessed at baseline and after 7 weeks, n = 50; PD Patients in OFF-ON states following inhaled levodopa, n = 26; PD Progression Patients, n = 60) wrote a standard sentence on a digitizing tablet. RESULTS: De Novo PD Patients showed reduced handwriting speed and increased in-air time. Acute dopaminergic stimulation in OFF-ON states was associated with shorter in-surface and in-air time. Longer disease duration was associated with increased variability in speed and acceleration. Higher MDS-UPDRS Part III scores were associated with lower speed and acceleration. CONCLUSIONS: Digital handwriting is an objective digital biomarker for quantifying PD dysgraphia and its response to dopaminergic treatment.
