This paper provides realistic snapshots and in-depth navigation on phonological variation transpired in typical conversations among Rizaleños, specifically on intonational patterns within the context of Tagalog as spoken across Rizal Province, Philippines. The inadequacy of documents pertaining to language research on this unique regional variety, the study fills a significant gap by analyzing 420 conversational corpora collected from 13 municipalities and one city of the Province. The study utilizes qualitative and quantitative methods, through David Brazil’s Intonational System framework which acoustic analyses through WavePad software to identify and characterize tonal patterns, including tone, key, termination, and prominence. The findings disclose significant intonational diversity linked closely to geographical variation, forming a distinct melodic contour that exemplifies the linguistic "DNA" of Rizaleño Tagalog. Remarkably, the results highlight that numerous municipalities in the province are in danger of linguistic attrition due to urban migration, social media language evolvement, and external factors, underscoring the impending peril to their phonological heritage. Despite these risks, Rizaleños actively maintain their language and culture through unique prosodic features that uphold local identity and day to day speech dynamics. In the end, the study adds valuable empirical evidence to Philippine sociolinguistics, emphasizing the fundamental function of intonation in regional language variation and identity protection. It advocates for continuous documentation and revitalization initiatives to sustain the phonological identity and uniqueness of Tagalog Rizaleño for future generations.
This special issue brings together six papers exploring how speech prosody intersects with other linguistic, cognitive and social domains, with particular attention to methodological diversity and understudied languages. The collection addresses a range of complementary topics: the role of intonation in resolving lexical ambiguity in Korean; the perceived personality traits of synthetic versus natural voices; prosodic modifications children make in demanding communicative contexts; perceptual cues to lexical pitch accent discrimination in South Kyungsang Korean; rhythmic differences between Hadari and Bedouin Arabic dialects; and durational marking of lexical stress beyond the stressed syllable in Soikkola Ingrian and Ayutla Tlapanec. Collectively, these studies make valuable contributions to the empirical and theoretical foundations of prosody research. By combining diverse methods with a broad linguistic scope, the collection provides a basis for future research on how prosody interacts with other dimensions of language and communication.
Abstract In Mandarin Chinese, the same acoustic feature, pitch, conveys both semantic valence and emotional prosody. The effects of semantic valence on bilingual emotional prosody perception are mixed, with some studies reporting semantic facilitation and others showing interference. To clarify this, we extend the conceptual account of semantic valence to second language acquisition by examining its two components: learners’ semantic knowledge and the inherent semantic valence of stimuli. We investigated the independent and interactive effects of these components of semantic valence on emotional prosody perception for L1-English L2-Chinese learners in Chinese words and sentences. We found that semantic valence facilitated L2 learners’ perception when congruent with emotional prosody, but interfered when incongruent. Notably, these semantics-prosody (in)congruence effects were significantly predicted by learners’ semantic knowledge. Our results suggest an interaction between linguistic knowledge and paralinguistic perception in bilingual emotion processing.
