Ballot

This study aims to examine how the Student Council President election at Junior High School (SMP) Al-Azhar Medan, an Islamic school, works as a pedagogical space for internalizing political ethics grounded in divine values. A qualitative case study was carried out. Data came from semi-structured interviews with nine informants (two candidates, four student voters, a Pancasila Education teacher, the student council advisor, and the school principal), observation of the election, and documentation in the form of election photographs, the voter attendance list, the ballot box, and the public vote tally. The data were analyzed with the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña. The results show six patterns: honest campaigning, trustworthy leadership, respect for peers’ choices, civility in competition, rejection of manipulative practices, and a school culture that accompanies the election through counsel, habituation, supervision, and reflection. The election recorded 606 votes, 375 for Pair 01 and 231 for Pair 02. The study contributes an Islamic pedagogical reading of school democracy: divine values act as an ethical orientation that is transmitted through nasihat, pembiasaan, muraqabah, and muhasabah, so that an annual procedure becomes a moral learning experience for students.

این پژوهش با هدف بررسی چگونگی کارکرد انتخابات رئیس شورای دانش‌آموزی در دبیرستان اسلامی (SMP) Al-Azhar Medan به‌عنوان فضایی تربیتی برای درونی‌سازی اخلاق سیاسی مبتنی بر ارزش‌های الهی انجام شده است. این مطالعه به روش کیفی و با رویکرد مطالعه موردی صورت گرفته است. داده‌ها از طریق مصاحبه‌های نیمه‌ساختاریافته با نه نفر از مطلعان (دو نامزد، چهار دانش‌آموز رأی‌دهنده، یک معلم آموزش پانچاسیلا، مشاور شورای دانش‌آموزی و مدیر مدرسه)، مشاهده فرایند انتخابات و اسناد شامل عکس‌های انتخابات، فهرست حضور رأی‌دهندگان، صندوق رأی و شمارش علنی آرا گردآوری شده‌اند. تحلیل داده‌ها با استفاده از مدل تعاملی Miles، Huberman و Saldaña انجام شده است. نتایج پژوهش شش الگو را نشان می‌دهد: تبلیغات صادقانه، رهبری امانت‌دارانه، احترام به انتخاب همسالان، رعایت ادب در رقابت، رد شیوه‌های فریبکارانه و فرهنگ مدرسه‌ای که انتخابات را با ارشاد، عادت‌دهی، نظارت و تأمل همراهی می‌کند. در این انتخابات ۶۰۶ رأی ثبت شد که ۳۷۵ رأی به زوج ۰۱ و ۲۳۱ رأی به زوج ۰۲ تعلق گرفت. این پژوهش خوانشی تربیتی اسلامی از دموکراسی مدرسه ارائه می‌دهد: ارزش‌های الهی به‌عنوان جهت‌گیری اخلاقی از طریق نصیحت، پمبیاسآن، مراقبه و محاسبه منتقل می‌شوند تا یک فرایند سالانه به تجربه‌ای اخلاقی برای دانش‌آموزان تبدیل شود.

Rhode Islanders voted in 2020 to remove the phrase Providence Plantations from the state's official name despite overwhelmingly rejecting an identical ballot measure in 2010. Drawing on intersecting literatures on critical toponymies, memory-work, and issue framing, we argue that the 2020 ballot measure succeeded where the 2010 measure failed because of three interrelated factors. First, the ongoing memory-work of racial justice advocates in Rhode Island and beyond significantly altered the repertoire of acceptable narratives, images, and symbols available to Rhode Island's political elite between 2010 and 2020. Second, the intense Black Lives Matter protests in May and June 2020 represented a critical juncture that gave supportive Rhode Island politicians the opportunity to reintroduce the name-change ballot measure under the broader banner of reckoning with systemic racism in the United States. Finally, activists and supportive politicians learned from the mistakes of 2010 and in 2020 mounted a more organized public advocacy campaign framed around contemporary racial justice issues designed to persuade Rhode Island voters to adopt the name change.
