Deborah J. Moon; Ruijie Ma; Hyunjin Lee; Amanda Cruce; Youme Kim; Sophia Luckenbaugh; … Frontiers in Social Psychology, 2026, Vol. 4, pp. 1968540 https://doi.org/10.3389/frsps.2026.1968540

Background Rooted in positive psychology, human flourishing scholarship focuses on the presence of health and wellbeing beyond the absence of illness. Contemporary flourishing research has increasingly expanded its focus beyond individuals to larger systems, including families. Family flourishing is an emerging concept with limited clarity in its conceptualizations and measurements. This scoping review synthesized existing literature on the unit-level conceptualizations and operationalizations of family flourishing and wellbeing and examined the extent to which existing measures align with contemporary understandings of human flourishing. Methods Arksey and O'Malley's methodology and the PRISMA-ScR reporting guidelines were followed. Searches were conducted in PubMed, CINAHL, ERIC, PsycINFO, Social Work Abstracts, Academic Search Premier, and Web of Science. Eligible studies presented explicit unit-level conceptualizations or quantitative measures of family flourishing or wellbeing as a multidimensional construct. Only studies written in English and published since 2000 were included. Title and abstract screening, full-text screening, and data extraction were conducted by two independent researchers, while monitoring inter-coder reliability. Discrepancies were resolved through consensus in consultation with the PI. Data extraction utilized a standardized form for consistency, which was iteratively revised through discussion. Results The final sample included 13 studies, which represented diverse regions, including China, Japan, Taiwan, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, New Zealand, the Philippines, and the United States. Studies were published between 2005 and 2025, with most studies published since 2020. Seven quantitative measures of family wellbeing were identified while no family flourishing measures were found. Conceptualizations represented diverse roots including Aristotelian eudaimonia, Indigenous cultural beliefs, and local spiritual teachings. While boundaries were often unclear, six broad categories of conceptualizations were identified, including relational/functional. eudaimonic/existential, hedonic/emotional, social/community, socioeconomic/environmental, and spiritual/religious domains. Relational/functional domains were most frequently covered while spiritual/religious domains were least frequently covered by existing measures. Most measures were developed more than a decade ago, and psychometric evidence beyond internal consistency was limited. Conclusion Family flourishing is an underdeveloped but promising area of scholarship. Further studies are needed to achieve greater conceptual clarity and to develop culturally responsive and psychometrically robust measures. Teacher identity formation under dual shaping of institutions and cultures: A comparative study of early childhood teachers in China and New Zealand

Feng Jiang Journal of Early Childhood Teacher Education, 2026, pp. 1-18 https://doi.org/10.1080/10901027.2026.2741731

Guided by the dual-shaping theory of institutions and culture, this comparative study examines the construction of professional identity among early childhood teachers in China and New Zealand, serving children aged 3–6 years in China and birth to school entry age in New Zealand, revealing how societal structures and cultural tradition’s mediate identity formation. Findings demonstrate divergent trajectories: Chinese teachers exhibit a “society-oriented” identity, emphasizing moral responsibility and collective values under Confucian cultural norms and centralized governance, which fosters an “implementer” orientation. In contrast, New Zealand teachers embody “professional autonomy,” rooted in individualistic cultural values and decentralized institutional systems that reinforce reflective practitioner roles. These differences underscore teacher identity as an outcome of institutional regulations and cultural values in interplay: China’s collectivism shapes an externally derived identity, while New Zealand’s autonomy-supportive structures and child-centered culture cultivate an internally driven identity. The study suggests that China’s early childhood teacher development could balance cultural heritage with institutional empowerment to expand professional agency, facilitating identity transformation. This cross-contextual comparison advances theoretical perspectives on the cultural adaptability of teacher professionalism.

Developing and validating a learning design framework to support inquiry in under-resourced science classes

Blessing Nemadziva; Catherine S. Cole; Steven S. Sexton Research Papers in Education, 2026, pp. 1-29 https://doi.org/10.1080/02671522.2026.2735574

This study aimed to examine how design strategies used by science communicators in informal learning environments (ILEs) could be adapted to develop a framework that supports scientific inquiry in under-resourced science classes. Using the analytic induction research strategy, a multiple-case study was conducted involving science communicators from three ILEs: National Science Museum (Thailand), Sci-Bono Discovery Centre (South Africa), and Tūhura Otago Museum (New Zealand). The Delphi technique was then used to validate the findings. Findings from the cases were reconciled with the literature from both formal and informal science education to develop a new inquiry learning design framework. The new framework, referred to as the Complementarity of Learning Framework (Colfram), consists of four simplified inquiry stages that are strengthened by design strategies from informal science learning environments. The Colfram is proposed as a design tool to assist teachers operating in under-resourced settings to develop their own inquiry learning materials. By combining the strengths of both formal and informal science learning viewpoints, we argue that the Colfram can better support teachers to develop material that achieves the broader goals of inquiry learning, which include cultivating STEM identities and sustained interest in science.
