This study aims to analyze the integration of social reconstruction and technological models in the development of Islamic Religious Education (PAI) curriculum as an effort to balance the intellectual tradition of Islam with the demands of social change and technological development. This study employs a qualitative method with a library research approach. Data were obtained from relevant scholarly literature, including journal articles, books, and academic documents addressing curriculum development, social reconstruction models, technological models, and Islamic education. The data were analyzed descriptively and analytically by comparing the characteristics, orientations, strengths, and limitations of both models to formulate an appropriate integration framework for PAI curriculum development. The findings indicate that the social reconstruction model provides a foundation for the PAI curriculum to respond to social issues, develop critical awareness, and promote social transformation, while the technological model strengthens instructional systems through competency-oriented learning, technology utilization, and measurable evaluation. Integrating the two models produces a PAI curriculum framework that remains rooted in Islamic intellectual traditions while being adaptive to social change, technological developments, and students’ needs. Thus, their integration can serve as a strategic alternative for developing a relevant, contextual, and socially transformative PAI curriculum.
The paper discusses teachers’ knowledge with the arrival of coronavirus pandemic, view of the need to know it better, as a condition to strengthen elementary education. The investigation intended to understand the meanings a Sociology teacher at elementary schools, who promoted the teaching-learning process, in 2020 and 2021, gave to her work and the professional knowledge she had previously built and/or mobilized when the classrooms became digital platforms and afterwards. The teacher used an amalgamation of all types of teachers’ knowledge to work aiming social transformation, which turned into a progressive methodology, focused on affectionate interaction with her students and mobilization for learning, which can be qualified as “enthusiastic”.
This article introduces students to sociology as both a way of thinking and a set of skills to understand the social world. Using the Sociological Literacy Framework (SLF), we outline key sociological concepts: the sociological eye, social structure, socialization, stratification, social change and social reproduction. We show readers how sociologists apply these concepts to a central social issue: unemployment. Sociology shifts us from individualized to social explanations, encouraging us to recognize social patterns that shape social outcomes, like inequality. In addition, we highlight core sociological skills: applying theory, evaluating evidence, and analyzing data, which enable students to critically think about social phenomena and engage policy debates. Sociology is a field that equips students to develop critical thinking around the social forces shaping their lives.
Teacher education (TE) policy is often caught between preparing teachers as agents of social change and a narrow ‘teacher effectiveness’ paradigm. This article examines this tension in Norway, where egalitarian traditions meet global neoliberal accountability discourses. Analysing the pivotal Norwegian TE curriculum policy document, Stortingsmelding nr. 11 (Minstry of Education and Research, 2008–2009), the study uses the Public Good Professionalism (PGP) framework as an analytical lens to assess the extent to which the policy enables the development of teachers as transformative public good professionals. We employ an AI-assisted deductive content analysis using a multi-coder ensemble of nine GPT-4 assistants configured with diverse parameters (temperature and top_p) to provide a parametric stress-test of the coding scheme. Findings reveal a significant discrepancy between stated social equality goals and substantive content. Capabilities explicitly addressed in policy (e.g. Informed Vision) show high ensemble convergence but are instrumentally reframed, stripped of their transformative potential. Conversely, capabilities essential for social justice (e.g. Social and Collective Struggle) show the lowest convergence, reflecting their marginalization. The study concludes that the policy prioritizes a ‘proficient technician’ over a ‘public good professional’, revealing a fundamental structural barrier to socially just teacher education in Norway.
Anglicare Southern Queensland (Anglicare) is a not-for-profit organisation that delivers community and human services. With a long history of hosting applied student placements in aged care, social work and community services, mental health and wellbeing, youth support, and nursing and allied health, Anglicare has in recent times begun to expand our hosting of work-integrated learning (WIL) relating to research and evaluation, advocacy, and community outreach. Proceeding from the principle that different types of WIL are advantageous to social science and humanities students at all levels, we currently host a variety of industry research projects, student placements, and internships. These arrangements encompass everything from formal assessment to projects that are co-designed between student/s and supervisor/s. The benefits of hosting WIL include supporting the future careers of emerging professionals while simultaneously expanding our capacity in research, evaluation, and advocacy. As working with students who are new to a corporate workplace can also be time intensive, WIL programs need adequate university staffing to support students’ engagement with industry hosts and moderated timelines for assessment and reporting requirements. In this practitioner reflection, we discuss how Anglicare’s Centre for Research and Social Change establishes and manages community engaged WIL partnerships, welcoming undergraduate and postgraduate students in all areas of the social sciences and humanities.
