Digital technologies are now at the center of university teaching and learning. They can also cause technostress, a strain that arises when technology demands outpace a person's capacity to cope. This study examined how technostress relates to psychological well-being in undergraduates and how these variables differ across demographic and academic groups. The study used a cross-sectional survey design. Using multi-stage sampling, the study selected 1001 undergraduate students (317 male and 684 female). They were enrolled in the faculties of Education, Arts, and Science at two public and two private universities in Lahore District, Pakistan. The study used a 21-item scale to assess technostress across five creators: overload, complexity, uncertainty, insecurity, and invasion. Well-being was assessed with the 42-item form of the Ryff scales. In a pilot sample of 300 students, internal consistency was .71 for technostress and .880 for well-being. Analyses were run in SPSS version 21 and included correlation, t tests for two groups, and ANOVA for more than two groups. The pilot study aimed to determine the instrument’s Cronbach's alpha reliability (TS = 0.705 and RSPW = 0.840). Experts were consulted to confirm the instrument's validity. The study tested the hypotheses using both descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings revealed a weak positive relationship between technostress and psychological well-being among undergraduate students (r = 0.22), which was statistically significant. There was no significant difference between male and female students in technostress and psychological well-being. However, the mean values indicate that females (M = 68.38) have slightly higher technostress than males (M = 67.16). Therefore, universities should foster a supportive digital environment that helps diminish the negative effects of technostress on students’ psychological well-being.
Abstract Faculty development (FD) and the preparation of future faculty are central to university teaching quality, yet in Japan they are studied separately and remain underexamined in English. Pre-faculty development (pre-FD), a term coined within Japanese higher education, exclusively denotes the pre-service teaching preparation of doctoral students and other prospective academics, broadly corresponding to the American “Preparing Future Faculty” movement. Treating the two as tracks of a single academic-development continuum, this article asks how each has been institutionalized and localized in Japan, and what constrains the translation of policy into teaching improvement. The study is a narrative, document-based conceptual review of policy documents, statutory standards, national surveys, and Japanese- and English-language scholarship, using the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) as an analytical lens. Three findings emerge. First, both tracks advanced through top-down policy-driven and policy-induced reform: In-service FD became a legal mandate in 2008, whereas pre-FD remains a best-effort obligation. Second, in-service FD has developed a distinctive cluster of locally grounded practices: inter-university networks, mutual FD, the collegial model, and student-engaged FD. Third, national survey data show participation rising while collegial formats and dedicated provision declined over the same period, indicating that participation rates are a poor proxy for teaching-development quality. Reading the tracks together reveals what single-track accounts obscure: shared organizational carriers and a common ceiling set by the absence of a continuing professional role in academic development. The article argues, as a proposition derived from the analysis, that sustainable development depends on connecting the two tracks into a continuous career pathway framed by SoTL.
Various disciplines view reflection as both a theory and a practice for helping make learning more visible to students as well as giving them a greater sense of agency; thus, the importance of reflection in higher education is well established. In recent years, scholars in SoTL have acknowledged and theorized about the importance of reflection for faculty. Our 360-degree model builds on this scholarship and research in writing studies in order to suggest that directional (inward, outward, forward, backward) reflection helps faculty analyze their teaching practices by integrating theoretical insights and evidence to evaluate effectiveness while also supporting ongoing professional growth. This poster shares an application of the 360-degree model of reflection, encouraging faculty to build reflective practices into their SoTL projects.
Shared Reading (SR) is a communal well-being intervention in which a literary text is read aloud and discussed in a group. A form of emotion-centred close reading, SR emerged as a reaction against elitist academic norms and was developed in an attempt to emotionalise and democratise literary study by moving it outside of the confines of the university. This theoretical essay argues that humanities and social science lecturers might benefit from introducing SR praxis into their classes. Each section analyses an aspect of SR through emotionally engaged (hooks, Palmer), relational (Hickey, Riddle, Gravett), and critical (Freire) pedagogical and theoretical lenses, arguing that SR serves many of the aspirations of these pedagogies. I then consider how SR might be implemented in an academic setting and the kind of adaptations that might be necessary. This essay is a thought experiment which I hope will lay the groundwork for a more sustained and applied experiment in SR. Throughout, I argue that infusing SR into university settings has the potential to positively benefit student well-being and academic performance.
Background Faculty development grant programs are strategic levers for improving teaching quality, curriculum design, and student learning, yet longitudinal evaluations remain scarce. In this study, we assess King Saud University's Program for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (PELT)— an early university-wide faculty teaching-grant initiative —examining its implementation, faculty uptake, and programmatic evolution over a decade. Methods Using a longitudinal, multi-source program-evaluation design, we analyzed eight PELT cycles through 157 completed grants, faculty ( n = 108) and student ( n = 413) surveys, and descriptive benchmarking against 11 international peers. Survey data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and selected faculty ratings were compared using Mann–Whitney U -tests. Results PELT evolved from a high-volume inaugural phase (71 grants) to a more selective model (6–11 grants annually) with a 95.7% completion rate. Participation remained broadly balanced across Humanities (34.4%), Science (30.6%), and Health (28.0%), supporting cross-disciplinary engagement. Teaching and assessment strategies (51% of funded projects) consistently dominated, with targeted emphases on job-market skills and e-learning in specific cycles. Among student respondents, 71.9% prioritized professional skills for employability, 52% favored problem-based learning, and 57% preferred project-based assessment over traditional exams. Successful grantees reported high overall satisfaction with the program (mean = 4.5/5), whereas non-applicants highlighted awareness gaps (54.5%) and workload constraints (33.3%) as key barriers. A statistically significant perceptual divide emerged between accepted and rejected applicants ( p ≤ 0.001), and international benchmarking positioned PELT in alignment with corresponding teaching-grant schemes. Conclusions PELT offers a replicable model for university teaching-grant schemes that combines faculty development, student-centered priorities, and longitudinal evolution. The findings support strategies such as targeted outreach, formalized resubmission pathways, and tiered funding to advance pedagogical innovation and strengthen educational development.
Interactive learning strategies are increasingly recognised as central to civic education, yet their contribution to civic intellectual and participation skills remains underexplored. This article examines how interactive learning strategies enhance university students’ civic intellectual and participation skills within an Indonesian higher education setting. Using a qualitative, single instrumental case study design, the study gathered data through participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation involving one lecturer and five students at a state Islamic university in Jakarta, and analysed them using Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña’s interactive data analysis model. The findings show that interactive learning strategies foster active, meaningful, and enjoyable learning by shifting students from passive recipients to active participants, thereby strengthening civic intellectual skills such as critical thinking, analysis, and argumentation, alongside civic participation skills including collaboration, communication, and democratic engagement. Unlike prior studies that emphasise civic knowledge acquisition alone, this article demonstrates that interactive strategies simultaneously cultivate the intellectual and participatory dimensions of civic skills. These findings contribute to civic education pedagogy by offering an empirically grounded account of how interactive learning translates into meaningful civic competence, with implications for curriculum design and lecturer training in higher education.
Introduction Digital transformation in higher education has increased the demand for instructional approaches that promote learner engagement, inclusivity, information literacy, and self-directed learning. Although microlearning, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and constructive alignment have individually demonstrated educational benefits, limited research has explored their integration within a unified pedagogical framework. This study designed and evaluated a novel digital teaching and learning process that integrates microlearning, connective alignment, and the principles of UDL to enhance teaching and learning in higher education. Methods To evaluate the impact of the novel digital teaching and learning process, a case study was conducted in the “Evidence-Based Practice in Physiotherapy” course in the BSc in Physiotherapy curriculum. A mixed-methods proof-of-concept study employing a randomized crossover design was conducted to evaluate the academic effectiveness, the students’ perceptions of the teaching, and the students’ satisfaction. Quantitative data were collected using assessments of academic performance, information literacy, and perception of the educational environment. Paired and independent t -tests were used to compare learning outcomes between intervention conditions. Linear mixed-effects modeling was used to account for repeated measures. Qualitative data from focus group discussions were analyzed using thematic analysis to explore the students’ experiences of the novel educational process. Results Students demonstrated higher academic performance when learning through the proposed digital educational process compared with conventional instruction, with an estimated mean difference of approximately 18 points on a 100-point assessment scale. Participants also reported more positive perceptions of the learning environment and high levels of satisfaction with the digital learning experience. Qualitative findings revealed enhanced learner engagement, flexibility, accessibility, peer interaction, and opportunities for self-directed learning. Students particularly valued the microlearning structure, social learning features, and learner-centered design of the intervention. Discussion The findings provide preliminary evidence that integrating microlearning, connective alignment, and UDL principles within a digital learning environment may support improved learning outcomes and positive learner experiences in higher education. However, the study was conducted within a single institution and in a single discipline and employed adapted instruments without formal psychometric validation. Therefore, further multi-institutional, multi-disciplinary research with longer implementation periods and rigorous validation procedures is required to confirm the effectiveness and generalizability of the proposed digital teaching and learning process.

Introduction This study explores the implementation of active learning methodologies in university teaching and their influence on the development of professional competencies among postgraduate students, through a literature review of 18 scientific articles published between 2020 and 2025, selected from the specialized databases Science Direct and ERIC. Methods The reviewed studies focus on strategies such as flipped classroom, problem-based learning, collaborative work, and gamification, highlighting their contribution to the enhancement of critical thinking, academic motivation, and employability. Results The findings reveal that effective implementation of these methodologies requires ongoing teacher training, curriculum redesign, coherent formative assessment, and pedagogical integration of emerging technologies. Persistent barriers remain related to institutional resistance, limited resources, and attitudinal constraints among faculty. Discussion It is concluded that active methodologies should not be understood as isolated techniques, but as essential components of a complex pedagogical ecology that demands integrated structural, cultural, and formative conditions aimed at transforming higher education and strengthening the professional profile of postgraduate students in a globalized educational context.
