This study examined the influence of attachment style on fear of intimacy among emerging adults aged 18–25 years. A quantitative approach involved 152 participants who were currently or had previously been in romantic relationships, recruited through convenience sampling. Data were collected using the Experiences in Close Relationships–Revised (ECR-R) and Fear of Intimacy Scale (FIS). Linear regression analysis showed that insecure attachment significantly predicted fear of intimacy (β = 0.570, p < .001). Both attachment avoidance (β = 0.432, p < .001) and attachment anxiety (β = 0.368, p < .001) were significant predictors, with avoidance showing a stronger association. These findings suggest that discomfort with emotional closeness and anxiety in romantic relationships are associated with greater fear of intimacy. The results highlight the potential value of psychological interventions that support emerging adults in developing safer and healthier romantic relationships.
This article is a direct continuation of a previous paper that presented the growing problem of emotional dysregulation among students in Israel, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing war following October 7, 2023. While the previous article described the scope of the problem and the existing knowledge gap, this article proposes a theoretical framework for understanding a mechanism that may help address it: secure attachment between teacher and student. Drawing on Bowlby's (1969, 1980) attachment theory and Ainsworth et al.'s (1978) work, the article examines how teacher-student relationships characterized by warmth, sensitivity, and trust, known as a 'secure base', contribute to emotional regulation, academic achievement, and students' psychological well-being. Special attention is given to the rehabilitative potential of such relationships as a corrective factor for children with insecure attachment histories, and to the role of teachers as protective figures during the ongoing Israeli security crisis. The review highlights consistent findings in the international literature, alongside a substantial research gap in the Israeli context: no systematic study has been conducted in Israel examining the relationship between attachment style (secure vs. insecure) between teacher and student and emotional regulation capacities among elementary school students.
Confidence in others’ support (felt attachment security) can sustain a person’s sense of continuity across time. In three experiments with Israeli young adults, we examined whether contextually activating representations of attachment security (being supported and cared for by responsive others) enhances self-continuity and buffers the effects of adverse life changes. In Study 1, participants completed a measure of attachment orientations, were randomly assigned to a security- or neutral-priming condition and recorded their sense of self-continuity using Venn diagrams depicting past-present and present-future overlap. Studies 2 and 3 introduced additional self-discontinuity manipulations: an article emphasizing anticipated university-related changes (Study 2) and a reminder of disruptions caused by the October 7 attacks on Israel (Study 3). In Study 1, security priming increased past-present self-continuity regardless of participants’ attachment orientations and increased present-future continuity primarily among participants low in attachment anxiety. In Studies 2 and 3, security priming buffered the impact of discontinuity inductions on present-future and past-present self-continuity, respectively. Attachment-related avoidance was consistently associated with lower self-continuity across the studies. These findings highlight the role of felt security in sustaining temporal coherence of the self and suggest avenues for future research on attachment processes, identity stability, and coping with life transitions.
This study evaluated changes in attachment behaviors among Spanish-speaking couples participating in emotionally focused couple therapy (EFCT), using data from a randomized clinical trial of EFCT in this population. The study examined perceived secure attachment behaviors -accessibility, responsiveness, and engagement- measured by the Brief Accessibility, Responsiveness, and Engagement (BARE) scale, and their association with dyadic adjustment measured by the Dyadic Adjustment Scale (DAS). Seventy couples were randomly assigned to EFCT or a waiting list; two withdrew before beginning the intervention, resulting in a final analyzed sample of 68 couples. Results showed some changes in attachment behaviors, with significant effects observed only in women's perceptions of their partners. Increases in both self- and partner-perceived secure attachment behaviors significantly predicted improvements in dyadic adjustment. These findings highlight the clinical relevance of targeting secure attachment behaviors as mechanisms of therapeutic change related to relationship satisfaction.
