Stress is a highly individualized and dynamic psychophysiological response, making reliable continuous monitoring challenging.Existing artificial intelligence approaches to stress detection have demonstrated the usefulness of physiological and neural signals, including electrodermal activity (EDA), heart rate variability (HRV), and electroencephalography (EEG).However, many existing approaches rely on population-level models or limited personalization, while longitudinal validation and adaptive modeling remain comparatively underexplored. This research proposes an adaptive, personalized AI framework for longitudinal stress monitoring by integrating complementary neural and physiological signals from EEG, HRV, and EDA.The proposed framework will initially establish an individual's baseline characteristics and subsequently identify deviations from their personal baseline rather than relying solely on generalized stress patterns across individuals.Machine learning techniques will be investigated for multimodal feature fusion and adaptive model updating as additional individual data becomes available. The study will compare the performance of conventional population-level models with personalized and progressively adaptive models using appropriate evaluation metrics. The research aims to determine whether incorporating individual baseline characteristics and continuous adaptation can improve the reliability and generalizability of stress monitoring. The proposed framework is intended as a foundation for future noninvasive, personalized, and wearable AI-based stressmonitoring systems, while addressing current challenges associated with inter-individual variability, multimodal integration, and longitudinal assessment.

Background Concerns about teacher stress, burnout, and attrition have led to increased international attention to teacher resilience in education research. This study investigates how teachers in Malaysia, Japan, Nigeria, Uganda, and Vietnam support resilience through their perceptions of teacher professional identity (TPI). Methods Comparative discourse analysis based on quantitative ethnography (QE) and epistemic network analysis (ENA) was used to identify cross-cultural discourse patterns and thematically evaluate teacher utterances related to stress, coping methods, support systems, and notions of resilience. Results The findings demonstrate that resilience is not only developed as an individual skill, but also through culturally and socially rooted understandings of TPI. Teachers from Japan and Vietnam focused on systemic navigation and emotional regulation, while teachers from Nigeria and Uganda focused on spirituality and moral leadership. Malaysian instructors have a mixed approach that blends strategic adaptation and community-centric principles. Conclusions The study highlights the need for contextually relevant and localized methods of professional development that are sensitive to teachers’ identities and contextual realities.

Cyprien Sikubwabo Discover Education, 2026, Vol. 5, Issue 1 https://doi.org/10.1007/s44217-026-02097-2

The purpose of this study was to examine the challenges and emerging innovation demands shaping university teaching in the twenty-first century and to develop a framework to enhance lecturer effectiveness. A qualitative research design was adopted, employing semi-structured interviews and focus group interviews. The study involved lecturers and academic administrators from 6 universities in Rwanda (5 private and 1 public).Three focus group discussions per university were conducted accordingly to major specializations, with 8 participants per group, totaling 144 lecturers. Additionally, 24 academic administrators, including deans and directors of Quality Assurance, participated in the interviews. Data were analyzed using thematic approach as per Braun and Clarke’s Six-phase framework. The findings revealed that lecturers face several interconnected challenges in adapting to contemporary university teaching. These include technological adaptation challenges, structural and institutional constraints, emotional and pedagogical adjustment, institutional support and policy alignment issues and student readiness and engagement gap. The findings also highlighted emerging innovation demands shaping effective university teaching, including redefining the skills of twenty-first century, promoting pedagogical and technological innovation driving change, balancing tradition with transformation, and strengthening institutional support for professional development and innovation. Based on these findings, the study developed an Integrated Innovation Framework comprising three pillars: Pedagogical-technological competence, Emotional and motivational resilience and Institutional Policy support. The framework provided actionable strategies for universities to foster sustainable, human-centered innovation, highlighting the importance of aligning professional development, infrastructure, policy and student engagement to enhance teaching effectiveness in the twenty-first century.

Brittle threshold: When adaptive success is the warning sign

Sayra Cristancho Medical Education, 2026, pp. medu.70322 https://doi.org/10.1111/medu.70322

CONTEXT: What happens when a system keeps working-not because it is well designed but because people keep absorbing the strain? That question stayed with me after studying a community-led vaccination clinic during the COVID-19 pandemic. It delivered hundreds of vaccinations a day, with no formal chain of command or protocols. By any measure, it was a success. What it cost to sustain that success was never examined. Across my empirical work, I kept encountering the same pattern: systems functioning because people stretched roles, coordinated through workarounds and relied on relationships that were not designed to carry the full load. These adaptations were effective. Yet they were also hiding strain. CONCEPTUAL CONTRIBUTION: In this paper, I introduce Brittle Threshold as a concept for attending to this condition. Rather than treating adaptive action as evidence of success, Brittle Threshold frames adaptive action as diagnostic information: evidence of how a system is coping and how close it may be operating to its limits. Drawing on resilience engineering and on empirical patterns from studies of team adaptation and community crisis response, I argue that adaptive success and vulnerability regularly coexist. The more smoothly work appears to run, the more it may depend on fragile support. IMPLICATIONS: Brittle Threshold offers three contributions. It translates what adaptive success conceals in health professions education, it shifts what counts as evidence of system strain and it unsettles the moralisation of endurance as professional virtue. The question it opens is not why systems fail, but when is endurance no longer enough?
