Abstract This article examines the 2025 controversy over Gallaudet University’s invention of a new American Sign Language (ASL) sign for Coca-Cola as a case study of resistance to the commodification of sign language in late capitalism. Drawing on discourse analysis of deaf social media reactions and satirical videos, this study explores how institutional authority and corporate branding collide with perceived deaf community norms of linguistic innovation. Situating the case within debates on language commodification (Heller 2010), symbolic capital (Bourdieu 1977), and sign language ideologies (Kusters, Green, Moriarty, & Snoddon 2020), this article argues that ASL is both a cultural emblem and an economic resource, and as such, a flashpoint for conflict. The backlash to the ‘new Coke sign’ reveals deaf resistance to top-down language planning and the creative reassertion of ownership through humor, critique, and digital activism. This paper provides a selective introduction to discourse analysis for research on risk, crisis and related fields. It reviews key theoretical and methodological foundations across social-constructionist and poststructuralist traditions, while placing particular emphasis on critical discourse analysis (CDA) and Norman Fairclough’s three-dimensional model. The discussion addresses how discourses can be defined and delimited, how meanings are constructed and contested, how discourse relates to power and social practice, and how intertextuality, interdiscursivity and genealogy can be used analytically. The concept of resilience serves as a recurring example through which these concepts are illustrated. The paper then translates the discussion into a practical research workflow, culminating in an illustrative CDA design concerning resilience in Norwegian total preparedness and total defence. The purpose is not to present discourse analysis as a single or privileged method, but as one possible approach to critically oriented qualitative research. Its value arises when language, meaning and their relationship to social practice are themselves central to the research problem.
Background Concerns about teacher stress, burnout, and attrition have led to increased international attention to teacher resilience in education research. This study investigates how teachers in Malaysia, Japan, Nigeria, Uganda, and Vietnam support resilience through their perceptions of teacher professional identity (TPI). Methods Comparative discourse analysis based on quantitative ethnography (QE) and epistemic network analysis (ENA) was used to identify cross-cultural discourse patterns and thematically evaluate teacher utterances related to stress, coping methods, support systems, and notions of resilience. Results The findings demonstrate that resilience is not only developed as an individual skill, but also through culturally and socially rooted understandings of TPI. Teachers from Japan and Vietnam focused on systemic navigation and emotional regulation, while teachers from Nigeria and Uganda focused on spirituality and moral leadership. Malaysian instructors have a mixed approach that blends strategic adaptation and community-centric principles. Conclusions The study highlights the need for contextually relevant and localized methods of professional development that are sensitive to teachers’ identities and contextual realities.
Coaching is increasingly used in schools as a form of professional learning, yet research has focused predominantly on outcomes and implementation rather than how coaching is understood by educators themselves. This study addresses that gap by examining how educators with experience of giving, receiving, or coordinating coaching conceptualise coaching through metaphor. Qualitative data were drawn from 26 educators working across a range of U.K. school contexts and comprised individual interviews and focus groups. This paper applies a distinct analytic lens, using an inductive metaphor analysis informed by the Metaphor Identification Procedure and a discourse-based approach. Five interacting metaphor systems were identified: movement and development, bounded space, force and imposition, hierarchy and role positioning, and visibility and monitoring. These metaphor systems construct coaching as both developmental and relational, while also revealing tensions between autonomy and constraint, and between support and accountability. The analysis suggests that coaching is not experienced as a discrete intervention but is actively made meaningful through language and shaped by organisational context. The study contributes to coaching research by offering an interpretive account of how coaching was constructed through competing metaphor systems. By foregrounding metaphor, this study extends coaching research by illustrating how educators make sense of coaching and how these conceptualisations may shape its developmental, relational, and evaluative meanings in practice.
When students provide unintended responses to cognitively demanding questions, science teachers may face a challenge of how to sustain the cognitive trajectory of the interaction without reverting to an authoritative stance. In this qualitative single case study, we examined the discursive moves employed by three experienced Life Sciences secondary school teachers in South Africa when students provided unintended responses to questions pitched at higher levels of the revised Bloom’s taxonomy. Drawing on video recordings of eight lessons, 12 interaction episodes were identified and analysed using an integrated framework comprising the Initiation–Response–Feedback pattern, the revised Bloom’s taxonomy and Hardman’s student talk move categories. Three categories of teacher discursive moves were inductively derived: pressing moves, escalating moves and interaction-regulating moves. One move, elaborating, was categorised as ‘other’. These moves were used by the teachers to sustain the interaction. However, we also found a recurring pattern where the teachers bypassed student-generated questions in favour of the teacher’s original line of inquiry. Interaction-regulating moves played an important role in opening, sustaining and closing interaction episodes. The findings highlight the need for teacher education to support teachers not only in maintaining cognitive demand during classroom interaction, but also in creating opportunities for deeper conceptual exploration through student contributions.
