Generation Alpha (born 2010-2024) and Generation Beta (born 2025-2039) represent an unprecedented developmental archetype defined by total digital integration and ubiquitous artificial intelligence (AI). This empirical study evaluated specialized psychological adaptation mechanisms, parenting models, and mental health intervention frameworks across these cohorts. Utilizing a mixed-methods design, quantitative data were gathered from $N = 300$ parents (Gen Alpha parents and expectant/early Gen Beta parents) using the Modified Parental Stress Scale (PSS) and Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), supplemented by qualitative interviews with $N = 20$ pediatric mental health experts. Independent samples $t$-tests confirmed that Gen Alpha/Beta display significantly higher digital dependency anxiety ($M = 38.60, p < .001$) alongside superior visual-spatial intelligence ($M = 44.10, p < .001$) relative to normative baselines. Crucially, a proactive "Digital Integration" co-navigation parenting framework yielded significantly lower parental stress ($M = 29.50$) compared to rigid "Digital Detox" restriction models ($M = 42.80, p < .001$). A preventive clinical framework focusing on Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) and cognitive impulse management is proposed.
Mothers often manage everyday discipline while also carrying the strain and worry that come with raising a child, yet these experiences are rarely studied together in Indian samples. This study examined the relationship between parenting attitude, parental stress, and anxiety in mothers. A quantitative, cross-sectional correlational design was used with 59 mothers selected through convenience sampling. Participants completed a 30-item questionnaire rated on a five-point Likert scale, in which parenting attitude was assessed through three dimensions (laxness, over-reactivity, and verbosity), and parental stress and anxiety were each assessed with ten study-developed items. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, Cronbach's alpha, and Pearson's correlation, with Spearman's rank correlation as an additional check. Mean scores were 3.30 (SD = 0.54) for parenting attitude, 3.06 (SD = 0.89) for parental stress, and 3.16 (SD = 0.72) for anxiety. Significant positive correlations were found between parenting attitude and parental stress (r = .52, p < .001), parenting attitude and anxiety (r = .44, p < .001), and parental stress and anxiety (r = .51, p < .001), and all three remained significant in a sensitivity analysis. Over-reactivity and verbosity were more strongly related to stress than laxness was. The findings suggest that difficulties in discipline, parenting strain, and worry tend to occur together, and that support for mothers could address emotional strain alongside parenting skills.
Mothers handle everyday discipline while also carrying the strain and worry of the parenting role, yet these experiences are often studied separately. This study examined the relationships between parenting attitude, parental stress, and anxiety among mothers. A quantitative, cross-sectional correlational design was used with a convenience sample of 59 mothers, who completed a 30-item questionnaire rated on a five-point Likert scale. Parenting attitude was assessed through three discipline dimensions based on the Parenting Scale (laxness, over-reactivity, and verbosity), and parental stress and anxiety were each assessed with ten statements developed for the study. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, Cronbach's alpha, and Pearson and Spearman correlations. Mean scores were 3.30 (SD = 0.54) for parenting attitude, 3.06 (SD = 0.89) for parental stress, and 3.16 (SD = 0.72) for anxiety. Parenting attitude correlated positively with parental stress (r = .52, p < .001) and anxiety (r = .44, p < .001), and parental stress correlated with anxiety (r = .51, p < .001). Over-reactivity and verbosity were more closely related to stress than laxness was. Internal consistency was high for the stress (α = .91) and anxiety (α = .88) scales. The findings suggest that discipline difficulties, stress, and worry tend to occur together in mothers, although the design does not permit causal conclusions. Support programmes for mothers may benefit from addressing stress and worry alongside parenting skills.
Background: Mothers of young children with neurodevelopmental disorders may experience substantial parenting demands, but their recent positive mental well-being varies. Objective: To examine the association between parenting stress and psychological well-being among mothers of children aged 0?6 years diagnosed with neurodevelopmental disorders. Methods: This quantitative cross-sectional correlational study analyzed 85 mothers using the 18-item Parental Stress Scale (PSS-18) and the WHO-5 Well-Being Index. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and a Spearman sensitivity analysis were reported. Results: Mean PSS-18 was 67.55 (SD = 4.73), and mean WHO-5 transformed score was 64.85 (SD = 12.92). Parenting stress was negatively correlated with well-being (Pearson r = -0.675, 95% CI [-0.777, -0.540], p < .001). Spearman correlation was also negative (? = -0.634, p < .001). Conclusion: Greater reported parenting stress was associated with lower recent subjective well-being in this sample. The cross-sectional design does not establish causation. These findings underscore the relevance of attending to caregivers? psychological experiences alongside child-focused services.
PURPOSE: Research on coping and parental well-being among Asian parents of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) remains limited. This study examined parenting stress, coping strategies, and psychological well-being among Chinese parents in Hong Kong raising children with ASD, compared to parents of typically developing (TD) children. METHODS: A total of 92 Chinese parents in Hong Kong participated in the survey, including 42 parents of children with ASD. Standardized measures were used to assess parenting stress, coping, and psychological well-being. RESULTS: Findings revealed that Chinese parents of children with ASD experienced significantly higher levels of parenting stress, anxiety and depression compared to parents of TD children. They reported using a broad range of coping strategies, including problem-focused, emotion-focused and dysfunctional coping. Subgroup analyses based on educational attainment and household income revealed that elevated parenting stress was consistent across all education levels. Notably, parents at both the highest and lowest ends of each category of education and income reported poorer psychological well-being. Differences in coping strategies between ASD and TD groups were generally not significant, except among parents with mid-range levels of household income and education. CONCLUSION: These findings highlight the urgent need to address parenting stress and psychological well-being among Chinese parents in Hong Kong raising children with ASD, irrespective of socioeconomic background. By situating the study within the Hong Kong cultural context, the research underscores the importance of culturally specific support interventions tailored to the diverse challenges faced by families and extends the broader literature.
Motherhood is inherently demanding, and some of these demands may be amplified for women with borderline personality disorder (BPD). The exacerbation of BPD symptoms from parenting-related stressors can have adverse impacts on mother-infant relationships and infant development. This qualitative study explores Australian mothers' views of the impacts of mother-infant dialectical therapy plus (MI-DBT+). MI-DBT+ is an innovative therapeutic intervention which integrates mother-infant dialectical behavior Therapy (MI-DBT), a known effective intervention for the mental health of mothers with BPD, with attachment and biobehavioral catch-up (ABC) therapy. Specifically, eight mothers completed semi-structured interviews about their experiences of intervention following completion of the MI-DBT+ program. A thematic analysis of this interview data found that mothers appreciated learning more skills to enhance their understanding of their infants' needs, behaviors and emotions. Mothers also reported improved reflective functioning and better control of their emotional responses. These skills assisted in managing emotional distress at both the individual and dyadic level. The study was limited due to available demographic data, with only maternal and child age available. Discussion also focuses on the fit between DBT and ABC, longer term developmental concerns and sustainability.
BACKGROUND: Parenting programs grounded in social learning (SL) and attachment theory are widely implemented, yet few trials have directly compared their effects across multiple parenting domains in community contexts. This study examined the relative effectiveness of an SL-based program (Triple P - Level 4 Group) and an attachment-based program (Circle of Security - Parenting, COS-P) against treatment-as-usual (TAU) when delivered online through community agencies. METHODS: A three-arm randomized controlled trial was conducted across four community organizations in Ontario, Canada. Caregivers of children aged 2-6 years (N = 502) were randomized (1:1:1) to Triple P, COS-P, or TAU. Primary outcomes were child behavioral difficulties (SDQ-Total) and parental overreactivity with post-intervention, 6-, and 12-month follow-up. Secondary outcomes included parental attributions, parenting stress, and caregiver mental health. Analyses followed an intention-to-treat framework using mixed-effects models (ClinicalTrials.gov #NCT04702191). RESULTS: Relative to TAU, Triple P demonstrated significant short-term reductions in emotional symptoms and conduct problems, and immediate improvements in hostile and helpless parenting and anxiety; however, most between-group effects did not persist beyond post-intervention. Effects on total child behavior problems at 12 months were no longer significant after correction for multiple testing. Improvements in parental attributions were sustained at 12 months. COS-P differed from TAU on only one outcome, at one time point. Within-group improvements in child behavior, dysfunctional parenting, and caregiver mood were observed in TAU, with COS-P and Triple P showing similar trends. Exploratory analyses suggested broader benefits for Triple P relative to COS-P. CONCLUSIONS: Triple P demonstrated selective short-term benefits relative to TAU across child behavioral and parenting outcomes, with sustained effects limited to parental attributions. COS-P showed no measurable effects relative to TAU. These findings highlight the importance of behavioral management and self-regulation components and point to the need for further research examining contextual moderators, maintenance strategies, and sustainable delivery approaches, including digital formats.
ABSTRACT Objective This study aimed to broaden the understanding of how parental exhaustion evolves during war, and how war exposure and social support are associated with these changes within individuals and between partners. Background Wars exert strain on parents. The Balance Between Risks and Resources Model posits that without sufficient resources, parents may experience parental exhaustion. The Conservation of Resources theory further suggests that fluctuations in stress and resources can trigger changes to one's own and one's partner's parental exhaustion. Method A longitudinal study followed 106 Israeli parent pairs, starting two and a half weeks after the onset of the Israel‐Hamas war. Self‐report measures were collected five times across 10 weeks and analyzed via a longitudinal actor‐partner interdependence model. Results The parental exhaustion of both parents declined during the war. Temporal increases in mothers' war exposure were associated with both parents' concurrent increase in parental exhaustion. Overall and temporal perceived social support were associated with lower parental exhaustion in mothers. Moreover, temporal increases in social support perceived by either parent were associated with reduced concurrent parental exhaustion in the other parent. Conclusion Parental exhaustion during war is a dynamic and relational process, associated with fluctuating stress and social support within and between partners. Implications The findings emphasize the need for systemic interventions designed to strengthen sustained social support, with particular attention to mothers' needs during war.
Screen time guidelines for preschoolers have heavily relied on duration controls. Recently, guidelines have evolved to focus on the content and context of use; however, digital health impacts are still widely measured against guideline targets that apply a one-size-fits-all assumption. Despite these recommendations, a global meta-analysis shows that only 35.6% of children under age five adhere to these guidelines. This low compliance is driven by contemporary lifestyle demands, busy parental schedules, and constrained urban spaces. Compounded by socioeconomic disparities and a lack of practical ideas for alternative activities, screens have become a default domestic childcare arrangement, escalating passive, isolated consumption. This paper introduces a three-layered ecological framework that bridges the gap between the targets of institutional guidelines and the diverse ground realities of managing digital engagement across different socioeconomic statuses. It lays out a practical blueprint to operationalize these objectives through a protocol that integrates screen awareness, meaningful alternatives, active engagement, responsive caregiving, and traditional games. This framework provides actionable guidance to help families transition from digital silos to interactive, shared spaces, aiming to alleviate parental stress and support the parent–child relationship.
Abstract Adolescence involves social reorientation toward peers, increasing exposure to interpersonal stressors and vulnerability to psychopathology. The current study investigated the potential buffering effects of high-quality parent–child relationships (PCRs) on the associations between peer stress exposure and multiple measures of positive valence systems (PVS) functioning. The study included 165 adolescents, ages 9–16 (81 girls, M age = 11.93, 78.18% White). Interviews were conducted to gather data on PCR quality and peer stress exposure. Adolescents self-reported their reward sensitivity, and behavioral reward sensitivity was derived from a reward learning paradigm. The reward positivity (RewP) was recorded during three tasks using monetary, social, and food reward stimuli. Contrary to our predictions, adolescents who had higher-quality PCR showed a blunted monetary RewP ( β = 0.17, p = .020) and reduced behavioral reward sensitivity ( β = 0.15, p = .040), when also reporting high levels of peer stress exposure. No significant interaction was found with other measures as the outcomes. The results suggest that high-quality PCR may not uniformly buffer against the effects of peer stress exposure and highlight differential effects for different PVS measures. Future research across multiple units of analysis is needed to elucidate the complex pathway to PVS-related psychopathology during this critical developmental stage.
