Stress is a major contributor to physical and mental health disorders, underscoring the need for reliable and interpretable detection systems. We present an interpretable multimodal deep learning framework that integrates electrocardiogram (ECG), electrodermal activity (EDA), and respiration signals using modality-specific neural architectures complemented by feature-based classical models. To ensure robustness and generalizability, the framework was evaluated under both subject-independent and subject-dependent protocols. Results show that multimodal fusion consistently outperformed single modalities, achieving 94.8% accuracy, 93.9% F1-score, and 0.97 AUC under subject-independent validation, compared with 86–91% accuracy for individual signals. In subject-dependent experiments, performance reached 97.2% accuracy and 96.8% F1-score. Comparative analysis with recent state-of-the-art methods demonstrated the competitiveness of our approach, while ablation studies confirmed the contribution of each modality and fusion strategy. Statistical significance testing with ( p < 0.05) further validated the reliability of these gains. Importantly, interpretability analyses using Grad-CAM and attention visualization provided physiological insights, revealing that the model emphasizes clinically meaningful regions such as ECG R-peaks and phasic EDA fluctuations. By uniting high performance, robustness, and interpretability, this work advances stress detection research and offers a physiologically grounded framework for continuous mental health monitoring.
Tourism research has largely treated well-being as a motivation or outcome, neglecting how it unfolds in-situ and relying on self-report data. Through a mixed-methods rhythmanalysis, this study examines how well-being emerges and evolves in digital-free tourism. Following 23 participants through three-night digital-free cabin stays, we integrate electrodermal activity, interviews, and diaries to capture embodied experiences of disconnection. Participants experienced rhythmic re-attunement from linear, digital temporalities towards cyclical, embodied rhythms aligned with nature and interpersonal connection. Physiological data showed varied responses to disconnection and fewer detected skin conductance responses post-trip, supporting qualitative accounts of calm and rhythmic re-attunement. Through attunement, plenitude, stillness, and reflexivity, we reconceptualise well-being as a dynamic rhythmic process shaped through embodied experiences, environmental cues, and relational synchrony.

Abstract Process‐oriented approaches are needed to understand the temporality and dynamics of teacher–student interactions in higher education classrooms. In this study, we follow a complexity science approach, based on non‐linear intra‐ and inter‐personal physiology methods, to explore the physiology of teacher–student interactions. In particular, we examine the relationship between higher education students' course interest, electrodermal activity (EDA, as an indicator of physiological arousal), perceived teacher enthusiasm in the classroom and lesson enjoyment. Ten higher education teachers and 42 of their students voluntarily participated in this study. Self‐reported measures were applied to assess students' course interest (pre), perceived teacher enthusiasm (post) and lesson enjoyment (post) in authentic higher education lectures. Teachers' and students' EDA was sampled at 2 kHz using Bionomadix mobile sensors during the lectures. Auto‐ and cross‐recurrence quantification analyses were applied to understand the temporal structures of students' individual EDA patterns and their physiological synchrony with their teachers. At the individual level, entropy of students' EDA predicted their perceived teacher enthusiasm and lesson enjoyment beyond course interest. At the physiological synchrony level, course interest was the only predictor of students' perceived teacher enthusiasm and lesson enjoyment. Moreover, our findings showed that the relationships between course interest and the structure of EDA patterns differ between individual and physiological synchrony levels. These results provide valuable insight into understanding interactions between teachers and students from a complexity science perspective. Practitioner notes What is already known about this topic? Control value theory (CVT) defines academic emotions in terms of the two dimensions of valence (positive or negative) and arousal (activating or deactivating). Enjoyment is considered a positive activating emotion that is central to effective teaching and learning. Emotions in the classroom are dynamically co‐constructed through social interactions among teachers and students. While valence is inherently subjective, objective physiological measures like electrodermal activity (EDA) are increasingly utilised to understand the arousal dimension of emotions and the dynamics of emotional contagion between teachers and students. What this paper adds? Observing EDA of higher education students during authentic lectures can provide valuable insights into their perceived teacher enthusiasm and lesson enjoyment. Exploring the temporal structures of EDA through nonlinear methods might help understand the emergence of students' lesson enjoyment in a bottom‐up manner. Studying temporal structures of EDA at intra‐ and interpersonal levels (i.e. teacher–student physiological synchrony) can provide a multilayered perspective on the relationship between students' course interest, perceived teacher enthusiasm and lesson enjoyment. At the intra‐personal level, students' course interest and their EDA entropy both predict perceived teacher enthusiasm and lesson enjoyment. At the inter‐personal level, teacher–student physiological synchrony occurs above chance level. Furthermore, physiological synchrony is associated with students' course interest. However, it does not predict perceived teacher enthusiasm or lesson enjoyment beyond the influence of course interest. Implications for practice and/or policy Teachers and learning designers can focus on fostering high course interest among learners at the beginning of their courses to facilitate positive relational dynamics with the students. Moving educational research towards non‐linear approaches can provide more nuanced insights into how students' and teachers' emotions evolve in higher education classrooms.
Stress is a highly individualized and dynamic psychophysiological response, making reliable continuous monitoring challenging.Existing artificial intelligence approaches to stress detection have demonstrated the usefulness of physiological and neural signals, including electrodermal activity (EDA), heart rate variability (HRV), and electroencephalography (EEG).However, many existing approaches rely on population-level models or limited personalization, while longitudinal validation and adaptive modeling remain comparatively underexplored. This research proposes an adaptive, personalized AI framework for longitudinal stress monitoring by integrating complementary neural and physiological signals from EEG, HRV, and EDA.The proposed framework will initially establish an individual's baseline characteristics and subsequently identify deviations from their personal baseline rather than relying solely on generalized stress patterns across individuals.Machine learning techniques will be investigated for multimodal feature fusion and adaptive model updating as additional individual data becomes available. The study will compare the performance of conventional population-level models with personalized and progressively adaptive models using appropriate evaluation metrics. The research aims to determine whether incorporating individual baseline characteristics and continuous adaptation can improve the reliability and generalizability of stress monitoring. The proposed framework is intended as a foundation for future noninvasive, personalized, and wearable AI-based stressmonitoring systems, while addressing current challenges associated with inter-individual variability, multimodal integration, and longitudinal assessment.
The key to affective computing is emotion recognition based on multimodal physiological and behavioral responses and aids in intelligent systems to monitor mental health, adapt human-computer interaction, and predict the intent of affectivity. Although the existing deep models show remarkable advances, most of them process modalities in isolation and do not consider causal, temporal, and individual specific mechanisms underlying the expression of emotions. This paper presents PhysioGraph-Transformer which is a dynamic interaction-aware graph-based Transformer that encapsulates time-varying directed interactions among multimodal physiological channels with personality-sensitive adaptation. All the modalities of the AFFEC dataset, such as EEG, electrodermal activity (EDA), facial dynamics, eye gaze, pupil response, and cursor motion, are modeled as a time-varying interaction graph, which is learned with self-attention. A layer of Neural Ordinary Differential Equation (Neural-ODE) trains continuously changing latent embeddings to be able to smoothly model changes of emotion. Personality-conditioned cross-modes attention incorporates heterogeneous information into a common affective portrayal, making it give a meaningful and individual inference. Experimental analyses on the AFFEC indicate that PhysioGraph-Transformer achieves 84.6% accuracy and 80.8% macro-F1 which outperforms CNN, RNN, GCN and Transformer baselines and has strong resiliency to partial modality loss. The attention interaction maps illustrate distinguishable relationships between personality factors and modality inputs that offer neuroscientific information on the formation of emotions. These results make PhysioGraph-Transformer a interaction-aware, decipherable and personality conscious model of multi-modal physiological emotion recognition.
