Holding multiplicity: narrative and trauma-informed couples therapy for dissociative identity disorder

Annemarie Sohn; Eman Tadros; Josh Bolle Sexual & Relationship Therapy, 2026, pp. 1-24 https://doi.org/10.1080/14681994.2026.2741916

Couples therapy involving a couple with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) promotes the incorporation of relational treatment modalities that have historically been regarded as adjunctive in DID care. Through narrative therapy, trauma-informed practice, and a neurodiversity-affirming framework, the case study addresses individual dissociative experiences and relational dynamics while centering client strengths, agency, and meaning-making. In contrast to integration, the therapy respected and honored multiplicity, supporting partners in constructing empowering narratives about their experiences and shared futures. The findings emphasize the need for therapists to master complex therapeutic interventions that enable co-constructed healing for misunderstood populations. Policy and clinical implications promote couples therapy for those with or systems impacted by DID, the enhancement of trauma training for relational therapists, and the encouragement of treatment methodologies that elucidate intimate partnerships as avenues of healing. This case contributes to emerging discourse positioning couples therapy as essential rather than ancillary in comprehensive DID treatment.

Romantic Love, Sexual Intimacy, and Logic-Based Therapy

Elliot David Cohen Journal of Rational-Emotive & Cognitive-Behavior Therapy, 2026, Vol. 44, Issue 4 https://doi.org/10.1007/s10942-026-00688-4

Logic-Based Therapy (LBT) is a method of philosophical counseling and psychotherapy based on Rational-Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) that uses logic, philosophy, and a network of “guiding virtues” to treat behavioral and emotional dysfunctions. This paper attempts to show how this virtue-oriented approach to psychotherapy can be potentially useful in counseling couples who may have sexual performance issues or other broader relational issues and seek to build healthy sexual, romantic relationships. As argued here, this is because such love is characterized by deep interpersonal commitment, compassionate caring, and security, which are strongly supported by LBT’s guiding virtues such as empathy, authenticity, self/other respect, courage, and metaphysical security. Beginning with a conceptual analysis of romantic love as a virtue-oriented construct, this paper introduces key aspects of LBT, as distinct from standard REBT, and presents a case study of a couple in a sexless relationship where one partner has an anger-control problem. Through the latter case study, the paper attempts to illustrate how 6 commonplace obstructions to romantic love (targeted by LBT) can potentially be successfully treated by applying LBT’s system of matching virtues.

Attachment Behavior Change Following Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy: A Randomized Controlled Trial With Spanish‐Speaking Couples

Dania Andrade-Urbina; Martiño Rodríguez‐González; María A. Cueli-Naranjo; Alfonso Osorio; Jonathan G. Sandberg Journal of Marital and Family Therapy, 2026, Vol. 52, Issue 4, pp. e70173 https://doi.org/10.1111/jmft.70173

This study evaluated changes in attachment behaviors among Spanish-speaking couples participating in emotionally focused couple therapy (EFCT), using data from a randomized clinical trial of EFCT in this population. The study examined perceived secure attachment behaviors -accessibility, responsiveness, and engagement- measured by the Brief Accessibility, Responsiveness, and Engagement (BARE) scale, and their association with dyadic adjustment measured by the Dyadic Adjustment Scale (DAS). Seventy couples were randomly assigned to EFCT or a waiting list; two withdrew before beginning the intervention, resulting in a final analyzed sample of 68 couples. Results showed some changes in attachment behaviors, with significant effects observed only in women's perceptions of their partners. Increases in both self- and partner-perceived secure attachment behaviors significantly predicted improvements in dyadic adjustment. These findings highlight the clinical relevance of targeting secure attachment behaviors as mechanisms of therapeutic change related to relationship satisfaction.
