This study examined how executive functions and cognitive-linguistic skills relate to online lexical processing during sentence reading as a function of word frequency, word length, and concreteness in 171 first- and second-grade children. Executive functions (interference, verbal working memory, and fluency) and linguistic abilities (vocabulary, Rapid Automatized Naming, and phonological awareness) were assessed and linked to two oculomotor indices of word processing, namely First Fixation Duration (FFD) and Total Fixation Duration (TFD), computed for six lexical areas of interest, using descriptive analyses and regression models. Children processed high-frequency words more efficiently than low-frequency words in both FFD and TFD. Early efficiency was associated with fluency and phonological awareness (PA), whereas later efficiency was linked to interference control. Although long words descriptively elicited longer fixations, neither age nor cognitive and linguistic skills significantly predicted differences in FFD or TFD, suggesting that word length was not a reliable predictor of lexical processing efficiency in this task. No consistent advantage was found for concrete over abstract words. Abstract words imposed greater demands during the initial stages of processing (FFD), but these differences diminished in TFD and were not explained by cognitive or linguistic skills. Taken together, these findings provide preliminary evidence that lexical processing efficiency in emergent readers may depend more strongly on word familiarity and on cognitive and linguistic skills than on word length or concreteness, highlighting the interaction between stimulus properties and individual competencies in early reading. However, the findings should be interpreted with caution, as they are task-specific and based on limited item sampling, with only one item representing each lexical category.
Assessment feedback is crucial for student learning and satisfaction in higher education. However, many students find it vague or unhelpful, leading to dissatisfaction. Workload pressures on educators limit opportunities to provide detailed, personalised feedback. The present study explores a data-driven approach that integrates linguistic analysis into assessment feedback, aiming to enhance its clarity and increase student satisfaction. Using computational methods, we analysed a 235,118-word corpus from 115 postgraduate essays, examining lexical diversity, readability, and word frequency. Individualised Linguistic Feedback Reports (LFRs) were created and shared alongside traditional feedback. Survey responses (N = 59) showed students found LFRs clearer and more satisfying. Although perceived usefulness and actionability were not significantly different, qualitative feedback highlighted the value of objective, specific writing insights. These findings suggest that linguistically informed feedback can improve clarity and satisfaction without increasing staff workload, offering a promising step towards more engaging and effective feedback models.
Abstract Although the discrete emotion perspective has gained increasing attention in affective and psycholinguistic research, large-scale normative datasets in a second language (L2) remain limited. To address this gap, the present study introduces a comprehensive database of discrete emotion norms for L2 English. The dataset comprises 1,122 words evaluated by 525 Chinese-English bilinguals across five discrete emotion categories: happiness, anger, fear, disgust and sadness. Participants rated subsets of these words using a 5-point Likert scale. The results demonstrate high inter-rater reliability and reveal systematic relationships between discrete emotion ratings and affective dimensions. Furthermore, these categorical ratings correlate with emotion prototypicality and key psycholinguistic variables, including age of acquisition, word frequency, concreteness and semantic diversity. Distributional analyses highlight a pronounced asymmetry: happiness dominates the semantic space. This database provides detailed discrete emotion ratings for each word and offers a fine-grained tool for selecting controlled stimuli for research on L2 emotion.
