Trans, non-binary and gender diverse adults' experiences of accessing sexual healthcare: a qualitative exploration

G. Burrows; Ingrid Young; Craig Donnachie; Kirstin Rebecca Mitchell Frontiers in Public Health, 2026, Vol. 14, pp. 1871652 https://doi.org/10.3389/fpubh.2026.1871652

Background Trans, non-binary and gender diverse (TNBGD) sexual function has historically been narrowly defined as physical capacities following medical and surgical gender affirming (GA) interventions; and this population's sexual health has been researched more in terms of external influences considered risky rather than being founded in individuals' desires and needs. This can produce discrepancies between services and people who access them. This study explores the service-related barriers, facilitators and compensatory strategies for TNBGD people seeking healthcare related to sexual function. Methods Based on qualitative interview data from n = 19 TNBGD adults in the UK, the dataset was deductively analyzed using Levesque's framework of healthcare access. Results TNBGD people face barriers in distance and transport to appropriate sexual health services, overlaps between sexual healthcare and GA services, and limits in professionals' TNBGD specific knowledge and cultural competence. To navigate these TNGBD people pursued independent knowledge acquisition, were selective during clinical interactions and access, and sought to meet their needs outside clinical settings. The analytical themes demonstrate varied barriers and their interrelatedness. For example, acceptability of a service was informed by the appropriateness of clinician's knowledge and interactions. In turn, TNBGD people's anticipation of un (der) met needs motivated compensatory measures, such as seeking information online or from peers before approaching formal services or sometimes instead of approaching them. Conclusions Healthcare services' design and delivery can present significant barriers to TNBGD adults seeking healthcare to support their sexual function. Providers' ways of interacting may offset some of the barriers and TNBGD adults may deploy strategies that enable them to access care that leads to satisfactory health outcomes. However, while significant barriers persist, TNBGD adults are liable to have unmet needs and consequent health inequalities.

National Heritage as Asset-Based Pedagogy: A Convergent Mixed-Methods Intervention Study of Future Primary Teachers in Kazakhstan

Kurbankulova Gulzhan; Stambekova Assel; Toktarbay Yeldos Qubahan Academic Journal, 2026, Vol. 6, Issue 4, pp. 1-14 https://doi.org/10.48161/qaj.v6n4a2616

Teacher education increasingly privileges standardized competencies, digital skills, and measurable outputs, while giving less attention to cultural identity, value negotiation, and diversity in multiethnic classrooms. This study reframes national heritage as an asset-based pedagogical resource rather than a static folkloric supplement. Using a convergent parallel mixed-methods design, the study examined how a 15-week course, “National Heritage and Pedagogical Values,” influenced ethno-cultural competence, professional identity, and culturally responsive teaching readiness among 42 Master’s students in primary education in Kazakhstan. Quantitative results showed significant growth across all measured dimensions, with the strongest practical shift in behavioural/pedagogical application, t(41) = 9.77, p < .001, d = 1.51. Micro-teaching observations confirmed that candidates converted heritage concepts such as Asar, qoshqar müiiz, and kösh into subject-specific teaching tools for cooperation, geometry, ecology, and classroom dialogue. Reflexive thematic analysis of essays showed a parallel identity shift: participants moved from viewing heritage as ceremonial folklore toward using it as an inclusive pedagogical language. The findings indicate that heritage-based teacher education can strengthen culturally responsive practice when mediated through structured reflection and observable teaching performance. The study contributes a post-Soviet, Central Asian model for preparing teachers who can balance national cultural revitalization with pluralistic classroom inclusion.

Eastern African expressions of suffering: A new Cultural Scripts of Trauma Inventory

Célestin Mutuyimana; And re as Maercker PLoS ONE, 2026, Vol. 21, Issue 9, pp. e0358482 https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0358482

Introduction Many people who have experienced trauma feel that PTSD criteria do not describe their experiences. They report culturally specific symptoms, in our new theory referred to as Cultural Scripts of Trauma, yet no study has systematically mapped these experiences or developed tools to measure them. Objectives This study aims to map cultural scripts of trauma suffering and to develop and validate the Cultural Scripts of Trauma Inventory (CSTI) across Eastern African countries, including Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania, and Kenya. Methods A qualitative study involving 115 participants across nine focus groups of trauma survivors and experts was conducted to map the main cultural scripts of trauma experiences and generate initial pool of items. This was followed by a quantitative validation study involving 1,208 participants from Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania, and Kenya. In an online survey, participants completed the pre-CSTI and additional measures for convergent and divergent validity, such as the International Trauma Questionnaire, Clinical Aspects of Historical Trauma, Purpose in Life Questionnaire, Subjective Vitality, and General Self-Efficacy. Results The results yield 71 Cultural Scripts of Trauma Sufferings (CSTs). The confirmatory factor analysis confirms 15 most relevant CSTs regrouped in five factors such as cognitive, body related, frame of mind, meaning disruption and family stress demonstrating excellent model fit. Those constitute 15 item-inventory that showed strong overall reliability and validity. Additionally, the model exhibited configural, metric, and partial scalar invariance, confirming its consistency across various groups. Conclusion This study is advancing culturally informed diagnosis and treatment of post traumatic sequelae by identification of culturally specific post trauma suffering and development and validation of CSTI in East African countries. It provides clinicians and researchers with a resource to adopt a model of beyond and including PTSD by offering a deeper understanding of post-traumatic stress in diverse cultural contexts.
