German Government’s WWII Memory Building on Commemorative Days, 1945–2025

Haoxiang Zhao; Lin Wang Journal of History Society and Culture, 2026, Vol. 1, Issue 1, pp. 34-46 https://doi.org/10.70267/jhsc.v1n1.3446

Contemporary international relations are deeply influenced by historical reflection, and how a state deals with its legacy directly affects its international image and identity. Germany’s postwar reckoning with the Second World War serves as a paradigmatic case, where the construction of cultural memory reveals an evolution of historical consciousness shaped largely by official initiatives. Cultural memory, understood as the transmission of historical memory through cultural symbols, in the German context refers specifically to the ongoing critical engagement with Nazi crimes and the Holocaust. This memory is not static but has undergone a tortuous development from initial rejection and silence to active assumption of responsibility, eventually becoming a core component of German national identity. Memorial days, as state-sponsored vehicles, function both as pivot points for historical reflection and as witnesses to the transformation of cultural memory. Focusing on the commemorative date of 8 May (the end of the war in Europe), this paper analyzes the dynamic nature of German cultural memory. The findings show that in the early postwar period, German society resisted the notion of “collective guilt,” and under Adenauer the government maintained a conservative stance. Brandt’s “Warsaw Genuflection” marked a turn toward active remorse. Under Kohl, the concept of a “spiritual‑moral turnaround” was advanced, and the Nazi past gradually became “normalized” in public discourse. Since the beginning of the 21st century, Holocaust memory has been integrated more deeply into national identity, with an increasingly ritualized and educational focus on 8 May. Germany’s experience demonstrates that confronting historical truth is essential for building a peaceful identity. Its path toward reconciliation through cultural memory offers a reference for the international community, promoting a shared commitment to learning from history and cherishing peace.

A new paradigm for Holocaust studies: from the compulsion to record through the limits of representation to the possibilities of interactivity

Abstract Media about the Holocaust are often referred to in terms of Holocaust representation, as if this is the only way to explore the relationship between media and this past. As the Holocaust transitions from a living to a mediated memory, this article offers an alternative perspective. Whereas some historical critiques still focus on representational appropriateness and trivialization, current research is less concerned with who or what is made visible in media about the Holocaust and more interested in what users/visitors can do with sources and narratives about the past with and through media. Yet, conceptually, scholars continue to understand interactivity in limited ways, either in terms of user agency (in media and memory studies) or the relationship between human designers and computational systems (in digital humanities). The author argues that the dominance of representation in Holocaust studies should be understood as an interruption in the conceptualization of the relationship between media and the Holocaust rather than the norm. Taking a philosophical archaeological approach reveals that two other paradigms—the record and interactivity—are far more concerned with materiality. Moving through the three paradigms of representation, the record, and interactivity, this article foregrounds the overlooked significance of materiality in understanding the relationship between media and the Holocaust, and offers a model of seven spectra to support further practice and critique of media works that adopt interactive intentions.

The persistence of the void: formal absence in Holocaust representation from Langfus to Ida

Ida

Katayoun Matloubi Holocaust Studies, 2026, pp. 1-24 https://doi.org/10.1080/17504902.2026.2742079

This article argues against the assumption that formal absence—narrative gaps in prose, withheld images, and acoustic restraint in film—is inherently ethical in Holocaust representation. Silence, withholding, and restraint do not possess ethical value in themselves; their force depends on historically specific conditions of authority, referential discipline, mediation, and reception. A silence that blocks spectacle and interpretive mastery in one context may, in another, risk aestheticization, political evasion, or appropriation. Bringing together Anna Langfus's Les Bagages de sable [1962; The Lost Shore] and Le Sel et le soufre [1960; The Whole Land Brimstone] with Claude Lanzmann's Shoah (1985), László Nemes's Son of Saul (2015), and Paweł Pawlikowski's Ida (2013), the paper reads “silence” across media not as a shared language of testimony but as a set of medium-specific practices for registering violence without converting it into spectacle or interpretive mastery. The article does not treat these works as parallel case studies. It uses them asymmetrically to trace a genealogy of mediation: Langfus marks survivor-era proximity, when fictional form registers the instability of postwar testimonial address; Shoah codifies refusal as a methodological and ethical doctrine; Son of Saul functions as a transitional bridge, showing how that doctrine is inherited within postmemory cinema and festival cultures of seriousness; and Ida becomes the limit case in which formal absence enters a contested national public sphere and becomes available for competing political uses and explicit institutional intervention.

با گردآوری Les Bagages de sable [۱۹۶۲؛ The Lost Shore] و Le Sel et le soufre [۱۹۶۰؛ The Whole Land Brimstone] اثر Anna Langfus با Shoah (۱۹۸۵) ساخته Claude Lanzmann، Son of Saul (۲۰۱۵) ساخته László Nemes و Ida (۲۰۱۳) ساخته Paweł Pawlikowski، این مقاله «سکوت» را در رسانه‌های مختلف نه به عنوان زبان مشترک شهادت، بلکه به عنوان مجموعه‌ای از رویه‌های خاص رسانه برای ثبت خشونت بدون تبدیل آن به نمایش یا تسلط تفسیری می‌خواند.
