Mixalis Mideline Hernández-Cruz; Carlos Augusto Hernández Armas; Rubén García Cruz Revista Metropolitana de Ciencias Aplicadas, 2026, Vol. 9, Issue 6, pp. 284-294 https://doi.org/10.62452/y8jqzk70

The present study aimed to analyze parental grief and coping in response to children’s school failure within high-demand parenting. A qualitative, descriptive approach with a narrative design was used. Case-type sampling was used to select mothers and fathers characterized by exercising parenting centered on high demands and expectations. Information was obtained through interviews and analyzed using Thematic Analysis, allowing the identification of six themes: parental involvement in schoolwork, maternal centrality in parenting and education, idealization of filial success, maternal vicarious success, intolerance of the loss of excellence, and resistance to grief over filial failure. It was concluded that some mothers perceive their children’s performance as their own success or failure and that high expectations were associated with anger, frustration, sadness, and disappointment in response to unexpected results, as well as with difficulties in accepting grief over the loss of the idealized image of the son.

Prevalence and associated factors of depressive, anxiety, and stress symptom severity among high school students in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam

Khoa Dang Nguyen; Tho Nguyen; Ngô Anh Vinh; Thi Minh Le Discover Public Health, 2026, Vol. 23, Issue 1 https://doi.org/10.1186/s12982-026-03185-2

Depressive, anxiety, and stress symptoms are common among adolescents, yet many studies dichotomise Depression Anxiety Stress Scales-21 (DASS-21) outcomes, potentially losing information across severity levels. This study estimated symptom prevalence and examined factors associated with the severity of depressive, anxiety, and stress symptoms among Vietnamese high school students. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among all Grade 10–12 students at one school in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam. Bivariate and multivariable proportional-odds logistic regression models were fitted for three ordered severity categories: normal, mild/moderate, and severe/very severe. Analyses were performed in R version 4.6.0. Among 366 students, severe/very severe depressive, anxiety, and stress symptoms were reported by 13.4%, 27.9%, and 16.4% of students, respectively. Female sex was associated with greater severity of depressive (aOR = 2.18, 95% CI: 1.41–3.39), anxiety (aOR = 1.88, 95% CI: 1.24–2.86), and stress symptoms (aOR = 2.37, 95% CI: 1.54–3.68). Average/weak academic performance was associated with greater depressive symptom severity (aOR = 2.10, 95% CI: 1.11–4.04). Poor family relationships were associated with greater anxiety (aOR = 1.79, 95% CI: 1.11–2.90) and stress symptom severity (aOR = 2.10, 95% CI: 1.25–3.53), while parental academic expectations were associated with greater anxiety symptom severity (aOR = 1.66, 95% CI: 1.10–2.52). Grade 11 students had lower odds of greater stress symptom severity than Grade 10 students (aOR = 0.50, 95% CI: 0.31–0.80). Female sex, academic performance, family relationships, parental expectations, and grade level were differentially associated with symptom severity. Analyses that preserved the ordered structure of DASS-21 outcomes showed that associated factors differed across symptom domains. These findings support sex-sensitive screening and targeted school- and family-based mental health strategies.

The quiet struggle: How vulnerable youth succeed with the right support

Sarah Gardezi; Martin Brown; Aideen Cassidy; Gerry McNamara; Joe O’Hara; Michael W. McNamara Review of Education, 2026, Vol. 14, Issue 3, pp. e70243 https://doi.org/10.1002/rev3.70243

Abstract Educational inequality remains a pervasive and deeply entrenched global issue, with youth from vulnerable and marginalised backgrounds disproportionately affected. Despite the significant challenges that hinder the academic progress of many young people, often reinforcing cycles of social exclusion and economic vulnerability, some students demonstrate the capacity to excel academically, effectively defying the odds. This study seeks to examine the key structural and interpersonal factors that enable such students to achieve positive educational trajectories. Adopting a qualitative narrative research design, the research draws on two sets of semi‐structured interviews with both young people from vulnerable backgrounds and adults who played a role in their educational success ( n = 16). Findings identify four broad categories of factors shaping student success: (1) personal attributes such as resilience, intrinsic motivation, clear goals and a strong sense of purpose; (2) parental expectations and support; (3) teachers' emotional support, involvement and constructive feedback and (4) peer support. Of these, two factors emerged as consistently significant across all cases. First, parental expectations, underpinned by trust in their child's abilities and a high valuation of education, proved essential. Second, the depth and longevity of student–teacher relationships were crucial, with teachers' emotional investment, trust and sustained support providing enduring sources of motivation and encouragement. These insights have important implications for schools, teacher education and policy development. Schools should foster inclusive, high‐expectations cultures with long‐term mentoring and structured peer integration promoting cross‐cultural interaction. Teacher education, in initial and continuing training, should include socio‐emotional learning and pedagogical strategies for non‐native language learners. Context and implications Rationale for the study: Previous research has typically examined either the perspectives of disadvantaged young people or those of professionals supporting them, often focusing on barriers and deficits. This study brings together both viewpoints to identify the key factors, relationships and supports that enable successful outcomes for young people in contexts where early school leaving is prevalent. Why the new findings matter: Our findings suggest that educational success among disadvantaged young people is shaped by interconnected support systems rather than individual effort alone. Strong parental belief in education and meaningful teacher–student relationships are central to resilience, reinforced by academic, social and community supports that enabled positive educational outcomes. Implications for practitioners and policymakers: Schools need to prioritise mentoring, inclusive cultures and structured cross‐cultural peer activities to strengthen belonging and aspiration. Teacher education and professional development should embed socio‐emotional learning, strategies for supporting multilingual learners and approaches that sustain high expectations in disadvantaged contexts. Policymakers should sustain and strengthen financial supports that enable disadvantaged students to access higher education, ensuring they keep pace with rising participation costs. Increased investment in schools serving disadvantaged communities is also needed to support meaningful family engagement and strengthen home–school relationships that foster resilience and educational success.

The Advantage Trap: Stronger Association Between Educational Achievement and Depression Among Socioeconomically Advantaged Students in China

Nanqian Chen; Wensong Shen Sociological Quarterly, 2026, pp. 1-31 https://doi.org/10.1080/00380253.2026.2731938

While research has richly documented how family background shapes both educational achievement and adolescent depression, far less is known about how it shapes their relationship and the mechanisms underlying this relationship. Using two waves of the China Education Panel Survey (2013–2015) and school fixed-effects models, this study finds that the negative association between educational achievement and depression is significantly stronger among socioeconomically advantaged students. For these students, both pressure from parental expectations and teachers’ criticism render academic performance more consequential for their psychological well-being. We use the term “advantage trap” to describe this pattern: while socioeconomically advantaged youth often perform better, their well-being is more tightly bound to academic success, suggesting that falling short may place greater strain on their mental health. These findings demonstrate how socioeconomic advantage can intensify, rather than buffer, the emotional costs of achievement, and underscore the need for coordinated educational and mental health interventions, particularly in high-stakes examination systems such as those in China.
