ALGORITHMIC WILDERNESS: AI LITERACY, TECHNOLOGICAL MEDIATION, AND DECISION-MAKING AMONG GENERATION Z HIKERS

ALGORITHMIC WILDER: AI LITERACY، TECHNOLOGATION، و DECISION-MAKING AMNERATION

Maneenate Worrachananun Asian Interdisciplinary and Sustainability Review, 2026, Vol. 15, Issue 1 https://doi.org/10.14456/aisr.2026.12

This phenomenological study explores the lived experiences of Thai Generation Z hikers, thoroughly examining the critical intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) literacy and complex decision-making in wilderness environments. As young adventurers increasingly pursue nature-based eco-experientia for psychological restoration, AI has rapidly evolved into an active, front-facing backcountry companion. Using the Theory of Technological Mediation alongside robust methodological triangulation—including in-depth interviews, focus groups, and interactive discussions with university-aged hikers—this research examines how algorithmic tools profoundly reshape human-nature relationships. The empirical findings clearly show that AI is seamlessly integrated throughout the trekking lifecycle, functioning as a vital digital safety net that mitigates environmental uncertainty. However, this deep integration precipitates a highly complex socio-technical paradox. While participants consistently exhibit exceptional functional AI literacy, an emerging algorithmic dependency actively threatens to erode traditional, intuitive wilderness judgment. Ultimately, AI facilitates a hermeneutic relationship in which pristine nature is interpreted through curated data, fundamentally transforming raw exploration into a mediated digital reality that urgently requires careful preservation of human agency within adventure tourism.

Perception as intermedial material: Metaperceptual sound art and perceptual translation

Blake Johnston Organised Sound, 2026, pp. 1-12 https://doi.org/10.1017/s1355771826101629

Abstract This article examines how intermedial electroacoustic audiovisual practice can treat perception as artistic material. It proposes Perceptual Translation as an artistic and analytical strategy that extends intermedial concepts beyond formal media relations by reorganising perceptual relations between sound, vision, body, space and technological mediation. The framework is described through four pragmatic strategies: Perspective Shifters, Perceptual Extenders, Perceptual Mimesis and Perceptual Rearrangers. These strategies are developed through Your Localisation Exposed , a wearable sound installation that inverts auditory spatial cues in real time, placing sound and vision into sustained perceptual contradiction. This is complemented by Your Hearing Them , which extends Perceptual Translation into an interpersonal auditory context through the sharing of an embodied listening perspective. Together, these works demonstrate how Perceptual Translation can operate as both an analytical and generative framework for electroacoustic audiovisual practice. By reframing intermediality at the perceptual level, this article argues for expanded approaches to audiovisual composition that engage perception itself as a compositional and conceptual resource.

Reconceptualizing outdoor geoscience learning for the generative AI era: a human-centered instructional model

Yoon-Sung Choi Frontiers in Education, 2026, Vol. 11 https://doi.org/10.3389/feduc.2026.1963429

Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) creates a distinctive problem for outdoor geoscience learning: it can broaden questioning and explanation, yet it can also pre-structure what learners notice and displace their interpretation of field evidence. Existing field-learning frameworks explain how conceptual, geographical, psychological, technical, and social novelty shape participation, but they do not fully explain this redistribution of epistemic work and authority. Extending established accounts of technological mediation to field settings, this Hypothesis and Theory article interprets GenAI as an epistemic reorganization of field inquiry rather than as technical novelty alone. It advances the central hypothesis that GenAI is more likely to augment, rather than displace, learners’ epistemic agency when it is introduced after direct observation and an initial learner interpretation, restricted to generating questions and candidate explanations, and subjected to human adjudication against field evidence. On this basis, the article proposes a six-stage human-centered model: preparing for field and GenAI use; attending to and recording field evidence; constructing an initial learner interpretation; engaging GenAI as a dialogic challenger; conducting human evidence-based adjudication; and completing reflective synthesis and epistemic accounting. Field evidence functions as an epistemic constraint, GenAI outputs remain provisional objects of scrutiny, and learners and teachers retain interpretive authority and responsibility. Six testable propositions specify expected effects of sequencing, initial interpretation, challenger-oriented prompting, explicit adjudication, substitution, and teacher orchestration. Operational criteria for distinguishing support, mediation, and substitution, and a thought experiment at a basalt outcrop, show how the model can be applied and tested. The model offers a falsifiable agenda for research in physical, hybrid, and virtual geoscience field learning while defining conditions under which GenAI use should be limited or withheld.
