Consistency, Standards and Complexity in Academic Assessment Integrity: Findings from Staff and Student Focus Groups

Miranda Daly; Paul J. Glew; Diana Jefferies Student Success, 2026 https://doi.org/10.63608/ssj.4076

This research explores the critical intersection of consistency, standards and complexity in academic assessment integrity using focus groups consisting of academic staff and undergraduate nursing students. While academic quality standards are mandated by accreditation bodies to ensure accountability and skill acquisition, the marking process remains a complex, intuitive task heavily reliant on a marker's experience and practicality. Significant challenges arise when marking becomes overly criteria-driven at the expense of core assessment goals, leading to variability in judging relevant student ideas or specific technical skills such as referencing. Such variability undermines the reliability and objectivity essential for assessment fairness. To mitigate these risks, pre-marking meetings are identified as essential for establishing shared requirements and expectations among staff. Strategic timing of these supports, ideally pre-semester, provides the necessary framework for quality assurance and enables markers to make meaningful and accurate judgements regarding a student’s true knowledge and performance.

This paper explores the challenges faced by Mathematics and Science teacher-educators at a South African university in maintaining assessment credibility during the transition from face-to-face to online modalities. It utilises a Professional Learning Community (PLC) framework and authentic conversations amongst nine PLC members as a means of documenting scholarship of teaching and learning. The study delves into the challenges relating to disruptions to traditional assessment practices and the strategies employed to navigate them. The research is guided by the substitution, augmentation, modification and redefinition model, which provides a theoretical lens for understanding the evolution of technology in teaching and assessment. The findings reveal four key challenges: assessment integrity issues, load shedding disruptions, technical glitches and limited lecturer expertise in designing and administering higher-order online tasks. While the transition initially involved substitution and augmentation, with online assessments often deemed ‘too simplistic’ and prone to issues of academic integrity, efforts to move towards the modification phase showed promise. Modifications, in the context of assessment, included adapting the assessment task to ensure Mathematics and Science concepts are effectively assessed in an online, non-invigilated settings, as illustrated in the paper. Despite these advancements, progress towards the redefinition phase where assessments are fully integrated and technologically sophisticated to mitigate unethical usage of artificial intelligence remains limited. The paper argues that achieving this phase requires sustained and deliberate training for teacher-educators in advanced technological integration, emphasising the need for continued professional development in the post-COVID era.

Designing responsible AI feedback in higher education: faculty readiness, student judgement, and metacognitive calibration

Patrícia Fidalgo; Reem Hashem Frontiers in Education, 2026, Vol. 11 https://doi.org/10.3389/feduc.2026.1953700

Artificial intelligence (AI) is now part of everyday academic work in higher education, including feedback. However, AI feedback does not automatically lead to learning. It can help students rethink a concept, improve a draft, and notice gaps in their work, but it can also create a false sense of progress when students accept suggestions without understanding them. This Perspective article argues that responsible AI feedback depends on faculty readiness and students’ evaluative judgement. Readiness is not mainly technical. It involves pedagogical judgement: knowing how to design tasks in which students work with feedback, compare it with evidence, revise with purpose, explain their choices, and remain responsible for the final submission. The article focuses on generative AI feedback and uses metacognitive calibration as a central concept. Calibration refers to the relationship between students’ confidence or self-judgement and independently evaluated evidence of performance. Evaluative judgement concerns students’ capacity to judge the quality and relevance of feedback and work, whereas calibration concerns the accuracy of their judgements relative to independently evaluated performance evidence. The article shows how ideas from feedback literacy, evaluative judgement, and self-regulated learning need to be adapted when feedback comes from systems whose accuracy and educational value cannot be assumed. It proposes a conceptual responsible AI feedback design cycle linked to assessment integrity, university policy, and faculty development. Although the cycle requires empirical testing, it offers a practical way to support reflection, calibrated judgement, and accountability without replacing students’ thinking.
