Mathematics education is an area of concern across multiple countries, and, while reflective practice is a recommended skill for improved teaching, research has found it a rare and difficult skill to develop. This has resulted in increased research into ways for developing both pre- and in-service teachers’ reflective practice skills. Using a four-level reflection model, our interpretive case study analysed the initial reflections of 18 pre-service teachers at the start of their journey towards becoming reflective practitioners. These student teachers were in the third year of their 4 year Bachelor of Education degree at a South African university. As part of their Mathematics Education Methods course, they participated in three lectures designed for developing both reflective practice and mathematical knowledge for teaching. Our analysis of the students’ written reflections from each lecture session indicated that reflections were predominantly general rather than mathematical, and at the first (descriptive) level of the model with only minor movement towards higher levels of reflectivity across sessions. The article contributes South African data on pre-service teacher reflections when using frameworks that focus reflections of various aspects of mathematics lessons.
Generative artificial intelligence (AI) has intensified longstanding questions about teachers' roles and the pedagogical conditions under which technology supports learner autonomy. This qualitatively driven embedded mixed-methods study examined practices reported and represented by Israeli teachers during an eight-week professional development program on AI, self-regulated learning, and learner-centered pedagogy. The primary qualitative strand drew on reflections, open-ended questionnaire responses, lesson plans, and pedagogical artifacts and used a hybrid deductive-inductive analysis. An exploratory quantitative strand compared 61 consenting pre-program submissions with 26 consenting post-program submissions. Because submissions were anonymous and unlinked, Welch independent-samples tests were used. Post-program means were descriptively higher for reflective teaching, AI-supported planning, and inquiry-oriented design, and essentially unchanged for differentiated instruction; none of the four comparisons was statistically significant after Holm adjustment. Qualitative analysis generated five interconnected dimensions: designing for learner agency, self-regulated teaching and reflection, AI-supported learning design, designing for capability development, and critical AI literacy. The findings support a dual-layer interpretation in which teachers' reflective regulation and critical judgment mediate the design of opportunities intended to support learner agency and capability. Because the study measured teachers' reports and artifacts rather than students' experiences or outcomes, its contribution concerns pedagogical intentions and professional learning, not demonstrated gains in learner agency.
Background Helping professionals face elevated risks of compassion fatigue and burnout, yet the daily processes through which emotional transformation occurs during therapeutic interventions remain poorly understood. This study examined how participants’ daily reflections shifted across the Emotion-Focused Training for Helping Professions (EFT-HP), analyzed through three complementary theoretical frameworks: Emotion-Focused Therapy's inner dialogue model (self-criticism, self-compassion, self-protection), Compassion-Focused Therapy's three-systems framework (threat, drive, soothing), and Ekman's basic emotion theory (primary emotions). Method Two hundred twenty-five helping professionals (88.0% female; M age = 38.7 years) from healthcare, social work, psychology, and education began the 14-day online EFT-HP intervention. Primary analyses focused on the 146 participants who completed at least 9 of the 14 days (completers), whose daily written reflections yielded 7,307 coded reflection units. Reflections were analyzed with directed content analysis and frequency quantification, applying non-exclusive, AI-assisted coding within three theoretical frameworks—EFT inner-dialogue categories, CFT emotion-regulation systems, and Ekman's discrete emotions—with a verbatim textual evidence excerpt retained for every assigned code. Results Across the intervention, participants’ reflections shifted from threat- and self-criticism-related content toward soothing and self-compassion. Within the EFT inner-dialogue framework, Self-Compassion was the most frequent category (17.9% of units) and was sustained throughout (Day-13 peak 30.8%), while Self-Criticism fell from 14.3% on Day 1 to 3.9% on Day 14 (73% relative decrease) and Self-Protection peaked on Day 6 (11.3%). Within the CFT emotion-regulation framework, the soothing system was the most frequently coded system overall (31.8% of units), followed by drive (20.4%); over the 14 days the threat system declined from 35.4% on Day 1 to 7.0% on Day 14 (80% relative decrease). Within Ekman's discrete-emotion framework, specific emotions were named less frequently: Fear declined from 2.7% to 0.8%, Anger peaked on Day 6 (15.0%), Joy rose to a Day-13 peak (14.8%), and Love was comparatively prominent (11.9% overall, Day-5 peak). Conclusions Across the 14-day intervention, participants’ daily reflections showed substantial shifts in emotional content, characterized by marked self-criticism and threat reduction alongside sustained self-compassion and soothing activation. Triangulated findings across three analytical frameworks: EFT inner dialogue, CFT emotion systems, and Ekman's primary emotions, are consistent with the emotional-transformation processes proposed by EFT-HP and with findings from previous controlled trials. Because the three frameworks were applied to the same reflection data, their convergence reflects analytic (theoretical) triangulation rather than independent confirmation.
Digital technology has reshaped higher education and the workplace, increasing the need for continuous skills development while expanding opportunities for flexible and accessible learning. Continuing education has therefore become an important avenue for professionals to develop knowledge and competencies in response to changing demands. However, access to online courses does not necessarily ensure sustained engagement or completion. This study examines how learner-centered course design can support adult learner motivation and persistence in professional continuing education, using a course offered by the University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) as a case. A qualitative case study approach was used, supported by descriptive analysis of institutional data from three successive offerings of the Integrating Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Management in Policies, Plans and Investments toward Inclusive and Sustainable Agricultural and Rural Development (CCA&DRM) course conducted from 2025 to 2026. Data included learner profiles, enrollment and completion records, course evaluations, implementation records, and two completer reflections. Completion rates increased from 23% to 55% and 88% across the three offerings, while the course received an overall mean evaluation of 4.63. Learners' reported motivations included professional development, academic preparation, practical application, environmental advocacy, and sustainability. Completer reflections further highlighted the value of relevant content, learning resources, recognition, and interaction in supporting learner engagement and persistence. The findings suggest that learner-centered continuing education should align course content with learners' goals, provide opportunities for authentic application, and strengthen interaction and support. The study highlights the potential of iterative, learner-centered course design in supporting adult learner motivation and persistence in professional online continuing education.
This study aimed to develop an Islamic Theology and Ethics learning module for Islamic Junior High Schools (Madrasah Tsanawiyah, MTs) based on tazkiyatun nafs (purification of the soul) for prospective Islamic Religious Education (IRE) teachers using the ADDIE development model. The research employed a research and development approach comprising five stages: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The participants were 22 prospective IRE teachers enrolled in the Islamic Religious Education Materials for MTs course at STAI Al-Hamidiyah Bangkalan during the 2025/2026 academic year. Data were collected through expert validation forms, student response questionnaires, student reflections, observations, and documentation. Quantitative data were analyzed descriptively using percentages, while qualitative data were analyzed through data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The validation results indicated that the module achieved feasibility scores of 91.00% from the subject matter expert and 89.00% from the instructional media expert, yielding an overall average of 90.00%, categorized as highly feasible. Student responses reached 83.18% (366 out of 440), indicating very positive responses. The practical examples received the highest score (86.36%), while the clarity and systematic presentation of the material received the lowest score (80.00%). Student reflections highlighted muhasabah (self-reflection), emotional regulation, moral awareness, and teacher role modeling as meaningful learning experiences. The module offers a contextual learning resource that integrates spiritual purification into Islamic Theology and Ethics education. However, the findings are limited to module feasibility and participants' perceptions and do not establish improvements in pedagogical competence or learning effectiveness. Future research should examine the module's effectiveness using larger samples and structured learning outcome assessments.
In mathematics, counterexamples play a central role in sharpening conjectures and refuting false statements. At the same time, there is an educational dimension, for example, when counterexamples are used to stimulate processes of conceptual change in secondary students. In practice, the answer to the question of whether a specific counterexample will succeed in convincing students of the incorrectness of a statement or the inadequacy of an idea will depend on a variety of factors. We collected criteria which can be used to compare counterexamples in educational settings through an analysis of existing literature, to which we added further, original criteria. In an empirical part, we investigated which criteria preservice teachers (PSTs) would use to compare counterexamples, and whether and how they could make use of criteria introduced by us. We found that across the PST discussions, all previously identified criteria prompted fruitful reflections upon counterexamples, and that comparing counterexamples in this way naturally led to in-depth discussions of the subject matter side of teaching decisions. PSTs discussed multiple criteria which we had not considered, seeming especially interested in context- and learner-dependent aspects of teaching. Thinking in terms of criteria showed potential as a theoretical lens, and for teacher training.
This mixed-methods study examined whether first-year teachers could improve relationships with students through Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS). Fifty novice teachers implemented one of three PBIS strategies: daily one-on-one conversation, verbal praise, or immediate rewards with 192 selected students over a two-week period. Teacher-student relationships were measured using the Student-Teacher Relationship Scale (STRS) before and after the intervention. Results showed significant reductions in conflict (t(191) = 7.14, p < .001, d = 0.98) and moderate increases in closeness (t(191) = –7.11, p < .001, d = 0.67). No significant differences emerged across grade levels, teacher and student gender, or PBIS strategy type. Thematic analysis of teacher reflections highlighted improvements in engagement, cooperation, emotional regulation, and relational trust. Although the study was limited by its two-week duration and reliance on teacher self-reports, the findings demonstrate that even brief PBIS interventions can yield measurable relational benefits. Implications are discussed for teacher preparation programs and school-based practice. Keywords: teacher-student relationships, Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), teacher preparation programs, first-year/novice teachers, school climate.
This study aims to analyze the model of ecotheological value internalization through bil-hal da’wah in school co-curricular programs at SD Al-Ishlah Tulungagung. The research employed a qualitative approach with a field research design to examine how ecotheological values are introduced, practiced, and integrated into students’ daily habits. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation focusing on the implementation of the Urban Farming program. The findings reveal that ecotheological values are internalized through practical environmental activities, including plant cultivation, environmental care habits, and religious reflections connecting environmental preservation with human responsibility as Khalifah fil Ardh. These activities provide opportunities for students to relate religious values to concrete actions in caring for their surroundings. The internalization model consists of four interconnected components: value transformation, value transaction, value transinternalization, and ecological-spiritual habituation. Its implementation positively contributes to students’ environmental awareness, responsibility, patience, compassion, and spiritual consciousness. This study concludes that bil-hal da’wah through environmental co-curricular activities effectively promotes ecotheological education and character development by integrating practical environmental engagement with religious understanding among elementary school students.
In 2024, humanitarian volunteers in New York began accompanying unhoused asylum seekers to Kenkeleba House Gallery, initially seeking warmth during the city’s migrant shelter crisis. What began as an act of necessity evolved into improvised English lessons using the exhibition Long Journey Forward: Black Men in Passage. Observational evaluation suggests that inquiry-based, translanguage tours fostered accelerated language acquisition, participant agency, and civic and cultural integration among participants. This paper argues for integrating museum education and humanitarian work through multilingual gallery teaching, and offers autoethnographic reflections on the reciprocal lessons museum professionals and humanitarian volunteers can offer each other.
In this study, we examine students’ reasons for course non-completion at a large, diverse, public research university in the university system of Georgia. We found these reasons in multiple datasets and used a mixed-methods approach to interpret them. While many studies have framed course withdrawals as rational decisions based on academic or personal factors, this study explores a variety of factors, including both practical and emotional considerations, that shape students’ withdrawal decisions. We analyzed emotional sentiment and reasons for course non-completion cited at the moment of withdrawal (i.e., disclosed on the registrar withdrawal form) as well as at retrospective timepoints (i.e., in a survey and semi-structured interview). At the time of withdrawal, students most frequently cited academic, personal, or mental health struggles as reasons for withdrawal, often expressing negative emotions. In some cases, students indicated the need for immediate crisis intervention. However, retrospective reflections revealed more positive emotions about their decisions and cited poor academic performance and an overall imbalance in their lives as key reasons. These findings highlight the complex interplay between academic challenges and emotional responses in the withdrawal process, suggesting that educators should consider both factors when addressing course non-completion. We also discuss the implications for future research and administrative policy.
This study investigates how a novice EFL (English as a Foreign Language) teacher enacts professional identity within the context of reading instruction. While prior research has established the dynamic and multifaceted nature of teacher identity, limited attention has been given to how professional identity is constructed and enacted through subject-specific pedagogical practices, particularly in reading instruction. This qualitative case study draws on interview and classroom observation data to explore how a novice EFL teacher enacts professional identities in reading instruction. The findings suggest that the teacher’s professional identity is not a fixed set of roles but is expressed through situated teaching practices and professional reflections. Specifically, three interrelated identity positions were identified—facilitator of meaning-making, cultural and textual guide, and reflective learner. These positions were reflected in instructional practices such as scaffolding, interpretive questioning, and the provision of cultural and textual background knowledge, as well as in the teacher’s willingness to learn from students and engage in professional development. Furthermore, the findings highlight the relationship between the teacher’s professional identity, individual agency, and the working conditions of her teaching context. By situating teacher identity within the practices of reading instruction, this study extends existing research by foregrounding the practice-based and context-sensitive nature of novice teacher identity. An Activity Theory perspective further informs the interpretation of how professional identity relates to pedagogical practices, instructional tools, and contextual conditions.
Professional communication is an important learning outcome in higher education, yet different active learning pedagogies may provide different communicative affordances for its development and enactment. This study comparatively examined how four active learning pedagogies-group discussion, role play, case study analysis, and student-led seminars-were associated with professional communication across five dimensions: clarity and precision, logical structuring, adaptability and tone, active listening, and persuasive expression. Using a mixed-methods, within-subject repeated-measures design, data were collected from 72 postgraduate management students across two cohorts. All participants experienced the four pedagogies through a Latin Square rotation. Data were drawn from pre-post self-reports, instructor-rated session-level communication performance, and qualitative reflections. Findings were examined across three analytical levels. At the aggregate level, pre-post results indicated significant gains in students’ self-perceived communication competence across both cohorts. These findings indicate perceived development rather than objective gains in demonstrated competence. At the session level, observed communication performance varied across pedagogical conditions, with group discussion and role play associated with higher performance scores than case study analysis and student-led seminars. At the dimension level, qualitative findings revealed distinct pedagogy-dimension linkages. Group discussion was associated with clarity, logical structuring, active listening, and persuasive expression, whereas role play was particularly associated with adaptability and contextual responsiveness. The findings suggest that active learning pedagogies should not be treated as interchangeable approaches to communication development. Instead, their communicative affordances may be considered in relation to specific instructional objectives and desired dimensions of professional communication. The study contributes a differentiated account of how pedagogical structures shape opportunities for communication enactment and provides an evidence-informed basis for aligning active learning design with professional communication objectives in higher education.
We feel stuck in an attempt to decolonize entrepreneurship research. What we need for the field of entrepreneurship research is a decolonization movement, not only an attempt. In this personal letter to the entrepreneurship community, as early career researchers, we share our reflections on the decolonization of entrepreneurship research. We argue that decolonization is often treated as one-dimensional, the solution being to simply publish entrepreneurship research with data from the Global South. But we all know that this is not decolonization. How do we know? Because we are part of it ourselves through our own conformity and masking not only of our research but also of our identity. We need to understand the challenges of decolonizing entrepreneurship research as systematic and multidimensional. If we do not, we fail to live up to the standards of plurality and diversity that the field of entrepreneurship research claims for itself. And that is a problem of knowledge creation, and above all, an ethical problem.
This qualitative pilot examined the feasibility and professional value of an interdisciplinary science-education intervention in three Bedouin kindergartens in Rahat, Israel. Eight preservice early-childhood teachers and eight preservice elementary-science teachers worked in interdisciplinary pairs during eight inquiry-oriented sessions and a 30-hour professional learning community. The study asked how participants described confidence, collaboration, and culturally contextualized science teaching. Reflexive thematic analysis of open-ended responses, discussions, field notes, and final reflections identified perceived growth in confidence, reciprocal disciplinary learning, and value in connecting inquiry to children’s environment. Children’s outcomes were not measured, and no causal or population-level claims are made. The study offers a contextually grounded model for teacher preparation and identifies requirements for larger prospective research in comparable underserved educational contexts.

Background: Teacher agency is essential to educational transformation, yet teacher development in Nepal often relies on standardized training approaches that emphasize prescribed methods rather than critical reflection, contextual experimentation, and collaborative learning. Objectives: This study explores how teachers develop and exercise agency through Critical–Creative Pedagogy (CCP) and participatory action research in two Nepali public-school contexts. Methods: Using a participatory action research approach, the study examined two contexts: a cross-school initiative involving 11 teachers from eight public schools in Helambu and a school-based initiative involving 30 teachers at Janata Secondary School in Bardibas. Data were generated over nine months through workshop interactions, teacher reflections, lesson plans, classroom observations, reflective dialogues, and informal conversations with students. The analysis examined how reflection, dialogue, classroom experimentation, and collective professional learning contributed to the development of teacher agency. Results: The findings indicate that teacher agency developed through iterative cycles of reflection, action, observation, dialogue, and re-reflection rather than through standardized training alone. Teachers began questioning textbook-centred and examination-driven practices and experimenting with learning activities grounded in students’ experiences and local contexts. Contextual adaptation and engagement with the wider school community, including school management committees and parents, emerged as important dimensions of pedagogical change. The Bardibas initiative appeared to foster stronger shared reflection, mutual support, and continuity of pedagogical change than the cross-school arrangement in Helambu. Conclusion: Teacher agency is a relational and context-dependent process that develops through critical reflection, pedagogical experimentation, and collaborative learning. Sustaining educational transformation requires professional learning opportunities that connect teachers’ agency with local knowledge, school-level collaboration, and community engagement. Novelty: By examining participatory action research across two distinct school contexts, this study highlights how the institutional setting of teacher collaboration may shape opportunities for collective reflection, mutual support, and sustained pedagogical change. It also foregrounds the importance of connecting teacher learning with school and community contexts in efforts to transform classroom practice.
This study examines how poetry listening instruction using YouTube-based audio media provides opportunities for empathetic engagement among 40 Indonesian Language Education students. Using a descriptive qualitative design, data were collected through classroom observation, written reflections, and interviews with eight students. The data were qualitatively analyzed by identifying and comparing students’ responses across four analytical dimensions: comprehension, cognitive empathy, affective empathy, and reflective empathy. The findings indicated a response pattern moving from understanding the emotional situations represented in the poem toward perspective-taking, emotional engagement, and, for some students, personal reflection. Affective-empathy-related responses were evident when students oriented their emotional reactions toward the experiences of the figures in the poem, whereas reflective empathy varied in depth across students. Intonation, pauses, tempo, and vocal expression supported students’ recognition of emotional nuances; however, emotional engagement alone was not treated as evidence of empathy. Rather than demonstrating that audio media directly internalized empathy, the findings suggest that expressive poetry listening, when combined with interpretation and reflection, can provide opportunities for perspective-taking and empathy-related reflection. The study highlights a pedagogical pathway linking literary comprehension, auditory experience, emotional engagement, perspective-taking, and reflection.
Abstract This study examines how students in a faculty of architecture develop environmental awareness through sustained engagement with the multi-layered historic and ecological setting of a place. It explores how the city’s complex historical fabric functions as an active pedagogical agent, moving beyond abstract instruction towards a transformative relationship between the student and the environment. Learning is examined as an ontological bond in which the physical, social and cultural contexts of the site actively shape architectural perception and environmental awareness. Drawing on students’ reflections, the study investigates how direct engagement with a real-world setting supports the development of socio-ecological consciousness within the framework of place-based pedagogy. Data were collected through reflective interviews with graduates of Istanbul Technical University who voluntarily participated in design studies in Mardin. Both qualitative and quantitative data were obtained and analysed. The findings suggest that future pedagogical models could benefit from more sustained site-specific engagement, enabling the environment to function as a central catalyst in architectural learning processes.
While higher education institutions increasingly claim to value student-centeredness, engaging students as authentic partners in educational assessment remains in many ways an aspirational practice. Grounded in the collective reflections of assessment professionals from diverse institutional contexts within the Student Partners in Assessment Community for Engagement (SPACE), the authors of this article explore the practical realities of student engagement, from consultation to collaboration, in assessment. Through qualitative thematic analyses, we identified profound promises of this work, including developmental benefits for students, enhanced validity of assessment data, and actionable institutional improvement. However, we also pinpointed significant pitfalls, such as resource and cultural barriers, inherent power imbalances, logistical mismatches with student availability, and tensions around quality. To bridge the gap between aspirational partnership and institutional reality, in this paper, we offer actionable strategies for assessment practitioners to mitigate some of these challenges. Within this paper, we provide a realistic, practitioner-oriented guide for cultivating sustainable and impactful student engagement in higher education
Student Partners in Assessment Community for Engagement (SPACE)، به بررسی واقعیتهای عملی مشارکت دانشجویان، از مشاوره تا همکاری، در فرایند ارزیابی میپردازند.
ABSTRACT This study addresses the need to support elementary teachers in preparing integrated science and literacy instruction to navigate the limited time they have in the day to teach science. We designed and implemented a Collaborative Unit Design Professional Development (CUD‐PD) model, bringing together two in‐service teachers (ISTs), two preservice teachers (PSTs), and two science teacher educators (STEs) to collaboratively design an 8‐day integrated science and English language arts (ELA) unit for second grade. We qualitatively analyzed interviews, reflections, and planning artifacts to investigate the affordances of this model. Results identified three primary themes: dedicated space for collaboration, expanded ideas for science integration, and increased enthusiasm for integrated science instruction. The affordances of space for collaboration and expanded ideas of integrated science instruction were tied to designed aspects of the CUD‐PD structure and effective components of teacher professional development: active learning tasks, collaboration, and alignment with school context. These features and how we structured them within the CUD‐PD model enabled the participants to create an integrated unit that addressed key challenges in their practice.
Abstract In this article, I examine how I embed algorithms in instrumental and electroacoustic compositional practices to organise numerical data drawn from extra-musical environmental and cosmological contexts within musical materials and structures. I explore such material-semiotic exchanges between music and surrounding environments to sonically reconfigure the matter of the life stories suggested by Ursula Le Guin, stories that challenge anthropocentric narratives. The aim of telling life stories aurally is to both explore Baradian new materialist feminist deployments of technologies and encourage conversations and reflections on the forms, causes and effects of the relationship between humanity and its environments as proposed by Donna Haraway. Through the integration of environmental and astronomical data into musical materials and structures, real-time sound processing, octophonic spatialisation and generative interactions, the works I composed and discuss in this article unravel the sonic textures of the displacement of vegetal species across the Earth, the formation of galaxies, the physical dynamics of bird flight and the pollution of the seas, creating meaningful intersections of different media to examine how sonic practices developed within hypermedial settings may narrate more-than-human processes.
